Four herbal incense products were seized from suspected drug abusers in Korea. [Show full abstract] ingredients in the herbal incense were identified as (1-pentylindol-3-yl)-(2,2,3,3-tetramethylcyclopropyl)methanone and its 5-pentyl fluorinated analog [1-(5-fluoropentyl)indol-3-yl]-(2,2,3,3-tetramethylcyclopropyl)methanone. The former is being sold via the Internet as a "research chemical" named UR-144, and the latter is sold as 5F-UR-144. UR-144 is a selective full agonist of CB2 cannabinoid receptor, and was first developed by Abbott Laboratories as an analgesic. It exhibits analgesic activity against both neuropathic and inflammatory pain associated mainly with the CB2 receptor, but shows less psychotropic effects associated with the CB1 receptor. Fluorination of the N-pentyl side chain of cannabimimetic compounds increases their cannabinoid receptor affinity such as with AM-2201, which shows both increased analgesic and psychotropic effects simultaneously. UR-144 and 5F-UR-144 can be classified as research chemicals based on their analgesic effects, but in practice are abused as psychotropic agents and can cause unexpected toxic effects. Thus, the trade and diversion of these chemicals should be monitored carefully for possible abuse. [Show full abstract] using female mice to evaluate the anxiety-reducing and memory-improving effects of herbal incense containing agarwood (Aquilaria crassna), cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia), and star anise (Illicium verum). A socially defeated state was induced on female mice by 10-day exposure to aggressive male mice. Female mice were then treated with herbal incense for 10 days. The treatment groups showed improved time spent in the interaction zone (social interaction test) and open arms (elevated plus maze test) as well as a percentage of novel object recognition, yet a decrease in immobility time (forced swim test). Additionally, treated mice showed reduced plasma corticosterone. These results indicated that herbal incense showed protective effects against stress and memory reduction. This study suggests that herbal incense containing agarwood, cinnamon, and star anise may offer an effective way to treat anxiety-related disorders. Further research is needed to pinpoint the active compounds and understand the mechanisms behind these therapeutic effects.

本草香颗粒态多环芳烃(PAHs)的分析对探究人体健康和环境安全的影响具有重要意义,但目前相关研究主要针对竹签香,对于配方更为复杂、日常使用更为频繁的本草香颗粒态PAHs定量分析研究十分有限且缺少针对性。为了研究本草香颗粒态PAHs的排放因子和排放特征,在自制的试验舱内采集5种本草香燃烧后的颗粒物,通过优化萃取溶剂、超声时间和仪器分析条件,建立了超声提取-气相色谱-质谱(GC-MS)测定本草香燃烧后颗粒物上所吸附的16种PAHs的方法。通过采集0.8 g样品,切取整片滤膜样品,使用正己烷-二氯甲烷(1∶1, v/v)进行超声萃取,经浓缩定容过滤后使用气相色谱-质谱分析,内标法定量。结果表明,16种PAHs在0.1~5.0 μg/mL范围内线性良好(相关系数r²>0.998),方法检出限(MDL)为0.4~3.8 ... [Show full abstract] ng/g;低、高2个水平的加标回收率分别为77.4%~99.5%和82.0%~101.3%;相对标准偏差(RSD)为0.7%~7.2%。5种本草香颗粒态PAHs的排放因子为4.60~11.89 μg/g。本草香的16种颗粒态PAHs中菲(Phe)的含量均为最高,所占比例为24.85%~42.59%,其次为荧蒽(Flu)、芘(Pyr)、屈艹 (Chr)、蒽(Ant)。本草香颗粒态PAHs中Phe的含量稳定且占比明显高于其他室内燃烧源,可将Phe作为本草香的颗粒态特征PAHs。颗粒态PAHs主要分布在3环和4环上,3环和4环PAHs占比之和为83.84%~96.31%。颗粒态的Phe/Flu比值可作为辨别不同室内燃烧源中燃香释放源的特征比值。该方法所需样品量少,灵敏度高,前处理操作简便,适用于燃香类产品中PAHs的快速检测,同时为了解本草香颗粒态PAHs分布规律和健康危害提供科学数据。

Using Web searches to track interest in synthetic cannabinoids (aka ‘herbal incense’)

[Show full abstract] using the Google search engine and the search term ‘herbal incense’. The first 100 consecutive sites were visited and classified by two coders. The websites were evaluated for type of content (retail, information, news, other). US unique monthly visitor data were examined for the top 10 retail sites, and these sites were coded for the quality of information available regarding the legality of synthetic cannabinoids sale and use.ResultsThe Google search yielded 2 730 000 sites for ‘herbal incense’ (for comparison of search terms: ‘synthetic marijuana’, 1 170 000; ‘K2 Spice’, 247 000; and ‘synthetic weed’, 122 000). Moreover, in the Google search, 87% of the sites were retail sites, 5% news, 4% informational and 4% non-synthetic cannabinoid sites.Discussion and Conclusions Many tools found within Google free services hold promise in providing a technique to identify emerging drug markets. We recommend continued surveillance of the Internet using the online tools presented in this brief report by both drug researchers and policy-makers to identify the emerging trends in synthetic drugs' availability and interest.
