1. INTRODUCTION
The fashion and textile industry stands at a critical juncture, propelled by a
growing imperative to embrace sustainability. This review delves into the intricate

At the forefront of this paradigm shift are fashion designers whose approaches
play a pivotal role in reshaping the industry. Designers are increasingly
championing sustainability by integrating eco-conscious methodologies into their
creative processes. Their decisions on material selection, manufacturing techniques,
and supply chain management are instrumental in driving sustainable
transformations Patti et al. (2021). This review examines the strategies and
innovations employed by designers to minimize environmental footprints, embrace
ethical production, and steer the industry towards a more sustainable future.
Central to this discourse are the sustainable materials revolutionizing fashion
and textiles. From organic cotton and hemp to recycled fibers and innovative
biodegradable textiles, a spectrum of eco-friendly materials has emerged
Moorhouse & Moorhouse (2017). This review critically evaluates the efficacy of
these materials in curbing environmental degradation, analyzing their production
processes, durability, and potential scalability within the industry.
By scrutinizing the designer-led approaches and the spectrum of sustainable
materials, this review aims to unravel the intricacies, challenges, and prospects of
sustainability in fashion and textiles. It seeks to provide a comprehensive
understanding for stakeholders, researchers, and industry enthusiasts, offering
insights to foster a more eco-conscious and responsible trajectory for the fashion
and textile domains He et al. (2019).
Eco-friendly materials form a cornerstone of sustainable fashion. Traditional
textiles often rely on resource-intensive processes and materials like conventional
cotton, which demands substantial water and chemical usage. However, the
industry is gradually embracing alternatives such as organic cotton, hemp, bamboo,
and recycled fibers. These materials offer reduced environmental footprints
through lower resource consumption, decreased chemical usage, and minimized
waste generation.
Manufacturing processes are another critical aspect of sustainable fashion.
Concepts like 'zero-waste design' and 'circular economy' have gained traction,
encouraging designers and manufacturers to minimize waste throughout the
production cycle Henry et al. (2019). Techniques such as upcycling, where discarded
materials are transformed into new products of higher value, showcase the potential
for creative and sustainable solutions.
Ethical considerations are pivotal within sustainable fashion. Supply chain
transparency and fair labor practices have come under scrutiny, prompting
consumers to demand accountability from brands. Initiatives like fair wages, safe
working conditions, and reduced carbon emissions during manufacturing are
becoming central to sustainable brand identities Yasin & Sun (2019).
Consumer behavior plays a crucial role in shaping the fashion industry's
trajectory. The rise of conscious consumerism has led to increased demand for
sustainable products. This shift in mindset emphasizes the importance of educating
consumers about the environmental and social impacts of their choices, thus
encouraging more responsible purchasing decisions.
2. SCOPE OF REVIEW
The principal objective of this research endeavor is to foster heightened
consciousness among both consumers and corporations pertaining to the entirety
of the fashion product life cycle, advocating for the integration of sustainable

materials. The focal point of this effort involves vigilant oversight over the sourcing
and legitimacy of materials, commencing from their raw form and extending
through the various stages of production until the eventual receipt by end
consumers. By orchestrating this process, the overarching aim is to provoke a
paradigm shift among designers and corporate entities, stimulating a reorientation
towards sustainability-centric thinking. This transformation is anticipated to
catalyze the development of novel product lines that are intrinsically aligned with a
visionary pursuit of sustainability within the fashion industry.
1) Sustainability:
Sustainability is a fundamental principle that encompasses every facet of living,
guiding practices and choices towards a harmonious coexistence with the
environment, society, and economy. From individual actions to global policies,
embracing sustainability is crucial for securing a more balanced and resilient future
for generations to come.
At its core, sustainable living entails responsible consumption and mindful
resource utilization. It starts with everyday choices, such as reducing waste,
conserving energy, and minimizing water consumption. These actions, when
adopted collectively, contribute significantly to environmental preservation. Simple
habits like recycling, using energy-efficient appliances, opting for public
transportation or carpooling, and conserving water not only reduce individual
ecological footprints but also create a collective impact on global resource
management.
Sustainable living extends beyond personal habits to include ethical and
conscious consumer choices. Supporting brands and products that prioritize
sustainable sourcing, ethical labor practices, and minimal environmental impact
drives market demand for responsible production. This, in turn, encourages
industries to adopt more sustainable practices and reduces the exploitation of
resources and people.
Education and awareness are integral components of sustainable living.
Empowering individuals with knowledge about environmental issues, biodiversity
conservation, climate change, and sustainable practices fosters a deeper
understanding and commitment to preserving the planet. Educational institutions,
advocacy groups, and community initiatives play crucial roles in disseminating
information and encouraging sustainable behaviors.
In governance and policy-making, sustainability serves as a guiding principle
for shaping legislation and regulations. Governments worldwide are increasingly
adopting policies that promote renewable energy, conservation of natural
resources, emission reduction, and sustainable development. International
agreements and frameworks, such as the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), set global agendas aimed at achieving a more
sustainable and equitable future for all.
Furthermore, sustainable living emphasizes social equity and inclusivity. It
recognizes the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic aspects,
striving to ensure that progress is not at the expense of marginalized communities.
Prioritizing fair labor practices, social justice, and access to basic resources like
clean water and healthcare are essential components of a sustainable society.
In essence, sustainability is a holistic approach that integrates environmental
stewardship, social responsibility, and economic viability. Embracing sustainability
in every aspect of life from personal choices to global initiatives fosters

2) Sustainability of Textile Industry:
The interconnection between efficiency and sustainability stands as a
foundational premise. The concept of achieving "more with less" epitomizes a
pivotal stride toward sustainable practices. Companies and brands that embark
upon the path of manufacturing goods of superior quality while minimizing energy
consumption and resource inputs are poised not only for natural growth but also for
profitable outcomes. This dual advantage underscores the inherent benefits derived
from such conscientious endeavors. Within the textile industry, sustainability plays
an ever more central role, acting as a propulsive catalyst towards an ethos that
champions environmentally mindful and socially responsible modes of textile
production. Sustainability in textiles encompasses a wide range of practices aimed
at reducing the industry's environmental impact, promoting ethical manufacturing,
and fostering a circular economy Shen et al. (2017).
At the heart of sustainable textile production lies the choice of materials.
Conventional textile manufacturing heavily relies on resource-intensive materials
like conventional cotton, polyester, and nylon, which often involve high energy
consumption, water usage, and chemical treatments. However, sustainable textiles
prioritize eco-friendly alternatives such as organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, and
recycled fibers Kazancoglu et al. (2020).
Organic cotton, grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, significantly
reduces environmental harm by preserving soil health, conserving water, and
safeguarding biodiversity. Hemp, a highly versatile and fast-growing crop, requires
fewer resources and minimal chemical inputs, making it an environmentally
friendly choice. Bamboo, known for its rapid growth rate and minimal need for
water and pesticides, presents itself as a sustainable option for textile production
Islam et al. (2021). Furthermore, recycled fibers sourced from post-consumer waste
or industrial scraps reduce the demand for virgin materials and divert textile waste
from landfills, contributing to a circular economy.
Innovative advancements have also led to the emergence of alternative
materials derived from natural sources. Fabrics crafted from pineapple leaves
(Pin atex), orange peels, algae, and mushroom mycelium showcase the potential for
sustainable textiles. These biomaterials offer biodegradability, durability, and
reduced environmental impact, presenting new avenues for sustainable textile
innovation Saleem & Zaidi (2020).
Sustainability in textile production isn’t limited to material choices; it extends
to manufacturing processes as well. Adopting eco-friendly practices like using low-
impact dyes and chemicals, reducing water usage, and implementing energy-
efficient technologies significantly minimizes the environmental footprint of textile
production. Techniques such as waterless dyeing, where innovative technologies
allow for dyeing fabrics without water, and digital printing methods reduce
chemical and water usage while enhancing sustainability. The textile industry is
increasingly embracing circularity the concept of creating closed-loop systems
that minimize waste and maximize the use of resources. The integration of recycling
and upcycling initiatives within the textile sector serves as a pivotal driver in
realizing the ideals of a circular economy. These initiatives involve intricate
processes that transform discarded fabrics into renewed fibers, yarns, or finished
garments. Such practices substantially diminish the reliance on raw materials while

of workers' rights across the entire supply chain. Notably, sustainable textile
production hinges upon collaborations between brands and manufacturers and
certified facilities that espouse and prioritize fair labor practices. These
partnerships are instrumental in fostering an industry that is not only
environmentally conscious but also ethically and socially responsible Nimkar
(2018).
Sustainability within the textile industry extends beyond its environmental
advantages; it encompasses a broader scope that resonates with the evolving
mindset of consumers. There is a notable shift in consumer consciousness towards
a deeper understanding of the ethical and environmental implications stemming
from their clothing choices. This heightened awareness has precipitated an
escalating demand for textiles that are not only sustainable but also produced in an
ethically responsible manner. Brands that prioritize sustainability gain a
competitive edge by meeting consumer expectations for eco-friendly and
responsible products.
3) Sustainable materials:
The textile fashion industry is increasingly prioritizing sustainability,
emphasizing the use of textile fibers that are naturally sustainable and have minimal
environmental impact. Examples of these sustainable fibers in the textile sector
include organic cotton, bamboo, flax, hemp, jute, ramie, sisal, abaca, among others.
The current focus on sustainability is not merely a passing trend but a crucial
concept for long-term survival in business.
While fabric finishing and garment manufacturing consume significant
resources such as energy and water, textile industry producers are proactively
considering sustainable practices right from the initial stages. Embracing
sustainable fibers as raw materials for creating textile fashion products signifies a
fundamental approach toward sustainability from the outset. However, there
remains considerable confusion regarding the sustainability impacts of textile
material production. Generally, natural fibers are often regarded as more
sustainable, while synthetic fibers are perceived as less sustainable. This viewpoint
is rooted in the belief that natural fibers require fewer resources during production
compared to synthetic fibers, and synthetic fibers tend to have greater adverse
effects on both people and the environment Cai & Choi (2020).
Certainly, the sustainability analysis involves a more comprehensive
understanding. While the production of synthetic fibers demands substantial
resources, the cultivation of cotton carries its own significant impacts. Growing
cotton necessitates large quantities of pesticides, fertilizers, and water. To produce
1 kg of cotton, approximately 8000 liters of water are required. In comparison, the
production of 1 kg of polyester utilizes less water. However, it requires twice the
amount of energy compared to producing the same quantity of cotton. As an
alternative to conventional cotton, organic cotton or low-chemical cotton presents
itself as a sustainable option due to its social and environmental benefits. The
production of organic cotton involves the avoidance of synthetic pesticides and

fertilizers, resulting in reduced water consumption. This approach contributes to
the promotion of sustainability by mitigating adverse environmental impacts.
The societal and ethical impacts of fibers extend beyond environmental
concerns. Presently, the carbon emissions generated during the production of
synthetic fibers pose a significant issue. Consequently, there is a growing demand
for carbon-neutral fibers, such as those derived from plants like bamboo and
Lyocell. These fibers exhibit the unique capability to absorb the same quantity of
carbon dioxide from the environment during their growth as they release
throughout their production cycles, thereby contributing to maintaining a cleaner
atmosphere. In contrast to oil-dependent non-biodegradable synthetic fibers like
polyester and nylon, there's a noticeable shift towards renewable and
biodegradable synthetic fibers derived from natural resources, such as Lyocell and
Poly Lactic Acid (PLA). These natural plant fibers and synthetic fibers produced
from natural resources are inherently eco-friendly, consuming fewer resources, and
are both recyclable and sustainable in their characteristics. This transition supports
a more environmentally conscious approach within the textile industry, promoting
sustainability and reduced ecological impact.
4) Significance of sustainability in todays world:
Sustainable fashion and textiles have gained immense significance in today's
world due to the pressing need to address the environmental and social impact of
the fashion industry. This movement towards sustainability encompasses various
practices aimed at reducing the industry's ecological footprint and promoting
ethical production methods.
The significance of sustainable fashion lies in its potential to mitigate the
adverse effects of the traditional fashion industry, which is known for its resource-
intensive processes, high carbon emissions, and extensive waste generation. By
embracing eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, hemp, recycled fibers, and
innovative textiles made from natural sources, sustainable fashion aims to minimize
environmental degradation. These materials often require fewer resources, less
water, and reduced chemical usage compared to conventional fabrics Gardas et al.
(2018).
Furthermore, the importance of sustainability in fashion extends beyond
materials to encompass ethical considerations and responsible manufacturing
practices. This includes ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and
transparency throughout the supply chain. By prioritizing ethical production,
sustainable fashion endeavors to promote social justice and improve working
conditions for garment workers worldwide.
In today's world, consumers are increasingly conscious of their purchasing
decisions and are demanding transparency from fashion brands. This consumer-
driven shift towards sustainable fashion is crucial in driving change within the
industry. Brands that prioritize sustainability are gaining popularity among
consumers who seek environmentally friendly products and support ethical
practices.
Moreover, sustainable fashion aligns with the concept of a circular economy,
emphasizing the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling clothing. Initiatives
promoting circularity, such as garment recycling programs, upcycling, and
designing for longevity, aim to minimize textile waste and extend the lifespan of
fashion items.

The evolution toward sustainable practices within textile production signifies
a paradigm shift towards environmental stewardship and ethical responsibility. At
the forefront of this movement lies the practice of organic farming, advocating for
the abandonment of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers in favor of nurturing fibers
like cotton, hemp, and flax through natural alternatives. This not only fosters the
growth of these crucial textiles but also heralds a commitment to preserving
biodiversity, offering a substantial departure from the environmental impact
associated with conventional agricultural methods.
The infusion of creativity and innovation emerges in the concepts of recycling
and upcycling, injecting new vitality into the industry by incorporating recycled

at minimizing water usage, exemplified by water-efficient dyeing techniques and the
implementation of closed-loop water systems, plays a pivotal role in upholding
environmental preservation as an integral industry priority.
Concomitantly, the migration towards low-impact dyes and chemicals
symbolizes a conscious departure from conventional practices, pivoting toward the
utilization of natural, non-toxic, or biodegradable alternatives in dyeing and
finishing processes. This transformative approach not only mitigates pollution but
also exemplifies a commitment to curbing the detrimental environmental
repercussions often linked to traditional chemical usage.
The propulsion towards energy-efficient manufacturing signifies a concerted
effort to harness renewable energy sources and optimize production processes,

Finally, the implementation of robust traceability and transparency systems,
empowering consumers to trace the origins of textiles and verify ethical sourcing,
contributes significantly to building trust and confidence in products that uphold
environmental and social responsibility.
6) Eco-Fashion in the clothing sector:
In the early 1990s, global communities and businesses began embracing the
green movement, seeking eco-friendly alternatives like organic cotton, bamboo
fibers, biodegradable detergents, and papers sourced from sustainably managed
forests. These products were marketed and sold under the umbrella of 'eco-
friendly.' However, over time, customers became dissatisfied as they found that the
quality of these eco-friendly products did not align with their prices. Esprit
Company notably launched their 'Ecollection,' featuring garments made from
organic cotton with natural dyes. Initially, this collection gained substantial market
traction, but customers gradually lost interest due to limited color ranges and dull
hues. An innovative move was made by PATAGONIA, introducing a fleece jacket
crafted from recyclable PET plastic bottles, which proved immensely successful in
the market. As a result, numerous other companies followed suit, creating their
versions of fleece jackets from PET bottles. However, this also led to the emergence
of cheap fleece jackets in the lower-quality market segment, with some
manufacturers using different materials that were not actually recycled.
The green movement in the clothing sector gained substantial momentum in
the late 20th century and has persisted into the 21st century. It originated from
increased awareness of environmental issues, encompassing concerns about
pollution, resource depletion, and social issues associated with labor practices
within the fashion industry. This ongoing movement reflects a continued effort to
address these critical environmental and social challenges within the fashion and
textile sectors. In the late 20th century, as information about the negative
environmental impact of the clothing industry became more widely known,
consumers, activists, and certain fashion brands started advocating for sustainable
practices. This movement was fueled by concerns over the excessive use of
resources, pollution from textile production, and the exploitation of labor in some
manufacturing processes Kazancoglu et al. (2020).

The shift towards sustainability in the clothing sector accelerated in the early

3. USE OF TOXIC CHEMICALS INCLUDING HEAVY METALS
Chemicals including heavy metals in textile Industry has resulted in severe
environmental pollution and health hazards. Therefore, it is crucial for the textile
industry to adopt eco-friendly practices and alternative sources of dyes to minimize
the negative impact on the environment and protect the well-being of both the
planet and its inhabitants. The use of toxic chemicals, including heavy metals, in the
textile industry has not only led to severe environmental pollution but also poses
significant health hazards. These chemicals, when released into the water bodies,
can contaminate drinking water sources and harm aquatic life. Moreover, they can
also have detrimental effects on the health of textile industry workers, as well as
consumers who come into contact with these toxic textiles. Around 25% of the
chemical compounds produced worldwide are used to a greater or lesser extent in
the textile industry globally. As many as 2000 different chemicals are used in textile
processing, especially in textile wet processing, many of which are known to be
harmful to human (and animal) health.
4. GENERATION OF HUGE WASTE
The textile industry plays a big role in creating environmental waste,
generating large amounts of post-consumer waste, industrial byproducts from
various stages of production, and hazardous materials from related industries.
Properly getting rid of this waste is a challenge because there are not enough
advanced recycling technologies that can handle mixed materials. As a result, a lot
of this waste either ends up in landfills or gets burned, adding to environmental
issues. This problem is made worse by the increasing consumption of textiles, driven
by fast fashion trends and the ongoing pandemic. This rise in demand only
exacerbates the global textile waste problem. To address this issue, there is a

Environmental concerns drive the demand for sustainable textiles, emphasizing the need to reduce pollution, conserve resources, and minimize waste in textile production. Sustainable textiles use eco-friendly materials and processes, promoting a circular economy and reducing the industry's environmental footprint. Consumer awareness and adoption of practices like recycling, reusing, and thrifting play a pivotal role in fostering sustainability. In this study, investigated the consumer knowledge and preference related to sustainable textile and fashion products. A questionnaire survey was used to collect the data from 250 random consumers in Banasthali Vidyapith. The consumer was reached personally and online for complete the questionnaire. Finding reveals that consumer concerns to the environment, the majority of the respondent known about the sustainable textiles. This study aimed to develop, implement, and validate a carbon footprint (CF) calculator to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by Portugal´s Textile and Clothing Sector (TCS). To achieve this, the GHG Protocol and life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology were applied to develop the CF and analyse two textile and clothing companies (A and B). Validation was conducted using a self-assessment method that employed 2 online calculators and a LCA software. The CF calculator enables the quantification of the 3 scopes of GHG emissions. Scope 1 includes direct emissions from sources that are owned or controlled by the company, such as on-site energy, transportation of raw materials, finished products and personnel, as well as water usage. Scope 2 comprises indirect emissions from the use of purchased energy and Scope 3 includes emissions that occur across the supply chain, such as public water usage, wastewater, transportation, employee business travel, waste disposal and the end-of-life treatment of sold products. Avoided emissions and carbon offsetting measures and carbon sequestration strategies, were included. For Company A, energy consumption was the largest contributor to the CF, accounting for 76% of the contributions. In Company B, the waste component had the greatest impact on the CF, accounted for 38% of the contributions. In the validation process, the electricity and fuel consumption components yielded values that are consistent with those from other calculators. The calculator is a tool that TCS companies can use to quantify their emissions and define measures to reduce or offset their CF.

The effects of sustainable textile production breakthroughs on the American fashion industry are examined in this study. As consumer demand for ethical standards and environmental concerns increase, sustainable solutions are becoming increasingly necessary in the textile manufacturing sector. Analyzing how creative textile production techniques can support the fashion industry's economic and environmental sustainability is the goal of this study. The main goal of this study is to assess the efficacy of numerous sustainable textile breakthroughs, such as alternative materials, technological advancements, and circular economy practices. The study investigates how companies may negotiate this challenging environment while remaining competitive, addressing the major issue of striking a balance between sustainability and financial limitations. To gather secondary data from documentary analysis and scholarly literature about sustainable textiles, a qualitative research methodology has been used. The main conclusions of the study were that the use of alternative materials greatly lessens the impact on the environment, that technology integration increases productivity, and that waste reduction is encouraged by the circular economy. Potential biases in the research that is currently available and a dearth of empirical data on consumer behavior about sustainable textiles are among the limitations, though. To promote sustainable innovations in the fashion sector, stakeholders must work together, according to the implications of the research, which stretch across theory and practice. The fashion industry significantly contributes to environmental waste and overproduction which result in substantial fabric waste and excess inventories. Print-on-Demand (POD) fashion models have appeared as a solution to these challenges by manufacturing items when receiving of an order. This strategy follow sustainability principles by utilizing digital printing technology to enhance production efficiency, minimize resource consumption and increase consumer preference for customization. This study evaluates the efficacy of POD models based on academic literature in mitigating overproduction and environmental waste in the fashion industry.The results of this study highlights that POD minimizes waste and underscores that POD models are an essential step in transforming the fashion industry into a more sustainable and ethical company, capable of balancing responsibility for the environment with economic feasibility.

This paper focuses on investigating the use of low-pressure oxygen plasma as a surface treatment aimed at enhancing the wettability and dyeability of cotton fabrics for use in textiles and footwear materials. Plasma activation modified the cotton fabric surfaces, increasing their affinity for polar liquids. The research thoroughly characterised the treated fabrics through a combination of analytical methods and physical testing. Plasma treatment was performed using a 13.56 MHz RF generator at 90 W power, with an oxygen flow rate of 500 sccm and a pressure of 0.30 mbar, for treatment durations of 30, 60, and 120 s. Changes in surface chemistry were analysed with XPS, while SEM was used to observe morphological changes. Static water contact angle measurements confirmed a reduction from 128.5° in untreated cotton to 25.6° in samples treated for 30 s, indicating a significant increase in hydrophilicity. Water absorption tests showed a maximum absorption capacity of 119.6% after 60 min for plasma-treated samples, compared to 65.7% for untreated cotton. Contact angle measurements verified that surface hydrophilicity increased following the treatment. Furthermore, physical tests, such as rub fastness, colourimetry, and water absorption, were carried out to evaluate improvements in wettability, dyeability, and overall performance. The results showed notable enhancements in the wetting properties of cotton textiles, enabling better absorption of water and dyes, along with improved fixation. The comprehensive characterisations provided insights into the mechanisms behind these improvements. This research offers a sustainable approach for the textile industry, as plasma technology is a dry process that enhances dyeing efficiency while maintaining fabric performance and lowering environmental impact.

Clothing is one of the primary human needs, and the demand is met by the global production of thousands of tons of textile fibers, fabrics and garments every day. Polyester clothing manufactured from oil-based polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the market leader. Conventional PET creates pollution along its entire value chain—during the production, use and end-of-life phases—and also contributes to the unsustainable depletion of resources. The consumption of PET garments thus compromises the quality of land, water and air, destroys ecosystems, and endangers human health. In this article, we discuss the different stages of the value chain for polyester clothing from the perspective of sustainability, describing current environmental challenges such as pollution from textile factory wastewater, and microfibers released from clothing during the laundry cycle. We also consider potential solutions such as enhanced reuse and recycling. Finally, we propose a series of recommendations that should be applied to polyester clothing at all stages along the value chain, offering the potential for meaningful and effective change to improve the environmental sustainability of polyester textiles on a global scale.

This work aimed to review the recent scientific research, focused on the application of recycled fibers, taken from textile waste, in the field of composite materials to fulfill the eco-sustainability requirements of textile manufacturing, and promote actions for a circular economy. The yarns and fabric production represent one of the most polluting processes of the industrial world. The harmful environmental impact of the textile process has been described by reporting the different treatments involving the raw material and the filament fabrication, and concerning the uses of insecticides, fertilizers, and many other chemicals for improving the quality of the final products. In addition, solid textile waste constituted a further additional issue for the environmental sustainability of fabric production. Various strategies have been discussed and in part already adopted by many companies to recover waste fibers and prevent them from ending up in landfills. The alternatives of fiber recycling for composite realization have been presented by reporting several recent studies involving the uses of recycled fibers from the textile waste embedded in different matrices: thermoplastic polymer, thermosetting resins, natural constituents, and concrete in light of specific applications.

At present, nanotechnology is a priority in research in several nations due to its massive capability and financial impact. However, due to the uncertainties and abnormalities in shape, size, and chemical compositions, the existence of certain nanomaterials may lead to dangerous effects on the human health and environment. The present review includes the different advanced applications of nanomaterials in textiles industries, as well as their associated environmental and health risks. The four main textile industry fields using nanomaterials, nanofinishing, nanocoatings, nanofibers, and nanocomposites, are analyzed. Different functional textiles with nanomaterials are also briefly reviewed. Most textile materials are in direct and prolonged contact with our skin. Hence, the influence of carcinogenic and toxic substances that are available in textiles must be comprehensively examined. Proper recognition of the conceivable benefits and accidental hazards of nanomaterials to our surroundings is significant for pursuing its development in the forthcoming years. The conclusions of the current paper are anticipated to increase awareness on the possible influence of nanomaterial-containing textile wastes and the significance of better regulations in regards to the ultimate disposal of these wastes.

The methodology is based on a case study of the exemplar VAUDE, a family-owned sustainable outdoor outfitter company. The results are in accordance with institutional theory and stakeholder theory as a theoretical framework explaining why companies deal with sustainability. The determined drivers depend on coherence at all levels of analysis, i.e., institutional, organizational, and individual. The barriers found are of an institutional and organizational nature only. The findings present significant practical implications for other T&C companies that seek to integrate sustainability into their corporate strategy and for the T&C industry to create a sustainability-friendly environment to drive more companies to become sustainable. It further supports T&C companies in identifying potential barriers, determining how to overcome them, and successfully integrating sustainability into their corporate strategy. To conclude, the results suggest that it only works if sustainability is strongly integrated into the corporate strategy and deeply anchored in all departments and daily tasks of a T&C company.

Circular economy is a contemporary concept including usage of renewable materials and technologies. The transition to the circular economy creates value through closed‐loop systems, reverse logistics, eco‐design, product life cycle management, and clean production. The aim of the study was to propose a holistic conceptual framework for barriers of circular supply chain for sustainability in the textile industry. Within this aim, an in‐depth literature review on barriers was conducted by covering all supply chain stages and circular initiatives in textile industry. Then, a focus group study was implemented. In the focus group study, barriers related to supply chains that prevent companies to implement the circular economy were discussed and validated. As a result, a total of 25 barriers were classified under nine main categories such as (a) management and decision‐making, (b) labour, (c) design challenges, (d) materials, (e) rules and regulations, (f) lack of knowledge and awareness, (g) lack of integration and collaboration, (h) cost, and (i) technical infrastructure.

Wearable electronics presage a future in which healthcare monitoring and rehabilitation are enabled beyond the limitation of hospitals, and self‐powered sensors and energy generators are key prerequisites for a self‐sustainable wearable system. A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) based on textiles can be an optimal option for scavenging low‐frequency and irregular waste energy from body motions as a power source for self‐sustainable systems. However, the low output of most textile‐based TENGs (T‐TENGs) has hindered its way toward practical applications. In this work, a facile and universal strategy to enhance the triboelectric output is proposed by integration of a narrow‐gap TENG textile with a high‐voltage diode and a textile‐based switch. The closed‐loop current of the diode‐enhanced textile‐based TENG (D‐T‐TENG) can be increased by 25 times. The soft, flexible, and thin characteristics of the D‐T‐TENG enable a moderate output even as it is randomly scrunched. Furthermore, the enhanced current can directly stimulate rat muscle and nerve. In addition, the capability of the D‐T‐TENG as a practical power source for wearable sensors is demonstrated by powering Bluetooth sensors embedded to clothes for humidity and temperature sensing. Looking forward, the D‐T‐TENG renders an effective approach toward a self‐sustainable wearable textile nano‐energy nano‐system for next‐generation healthcare applications. A universal strategy for enhancing the current and charging speed of textile‐based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) toward a wearable textile Nano‐energy nano‐system for next‐generation healthcare applications is proposed. The soft, flexible, and thin TENG textile is capable of scavenging energy from various body motions effectively, and the enhanced current can directly stimulate both nerves and muscles.

Motivated by United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the importance of sustainability, this study examines how the textile and apparel (TA) supply chains can comply with the SDGs. By examining the literature as well as industrial practices, we show that the current sustainable operations in TA industry are far away from realizing the goals of economic growth going hand-in-hand with the social and environmental sustainability. For instance, among the SDGs, the goals of “Responsible Consumption and Production”, “Clean Water and Sanitation”, and “Climate Action” receive a considerable amount of attention, while goals of “No Poverty”, “Reduced Inequalities”, “Life below Water” and “Life on Land” have the least attention. Balanced sustainable development actions from the stakeholders’ perspective are proposed. Managerial implications and future studies are discussed.

The textile sector is growing, so does the technical aspects of it. This has resulted in more chemical consumption. Recently, technical textiles, with attributional substances received attention due to sustainability factor in terms of their raw material production and manufacturing. Studies are present using life cycle assessment (LCA) results to justify the environmental preference of technical textiles over conventional textiles by environmental parity method. Technical textiles like antibacterial ones are expected for less washing due to low prevalence of odor-causing germs, therefore pose lower environmental impacts than conventional textiles in a long run. At the end-of-life (EOL), waste generated from technical and conventional textiles, are treated as the same - municipal solid waste (MSW), whether they go for landfill or incineration. In reality, environmental impacts of technical and conventional textiles waste cannot be the same regardless of their differences in phases like raw material, production, use and especially EOL phase. LCA “gate-to-grave” approach was employed to study two technical textiles with the same weight but different functionalities, one is flame retardant (FR) treated wool and the other is silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) treated polyester. They are scrutinized in order to have better understanding of environmental parity, especially in their use phase and at the EOL phase. Ten-midpoint categories were used to analyze the environmental impacts during the use phase and EOL phase of the two technical textiles. Results indicate that in use phase, life cycle impact of technical textiles is upfront and alters with the change in number of washes, the types of applied attributional substances and their release rates. At EOL phase, it was found that there is no correlation between the two types of technical textiles in terms of environmental impacts. They are nonreciprocal to MSW or even conventional textile waste.

Textiles release fibres to the environment during production, use, and at end-of-life disposal. Approximately two-thirds of all textile items are now synthetic, dominated by petroleum-based organic polymers such as polyester, polyamide and acrylic. Plastic microfibres (<5 mm) and nanofibres (<100 nm) have been identified in ecosystems in all regions of the globe and have been estimated to comprise up to 35% of primary microplastics in marine environments, a major proportion of microplastics on coastal shorelines and to persist for decades in soils treated with sludge from waste water treatment plants. In this paper we present a critical review of factors affecting the release from fabrics of microfibres, and of the risks for impacts on ecological systems and potentially on human health. This review is used as a basis for exploring the potential to include a metric for microplastic pollution in tools that have been developed to quantify the environmental performance of apparel and home textiles. We conclude that the simple metric of mass or number of microfibres released combined with data on their persistence in the environment, could provide a useful interim mid-point indicator in sustainability assessment tools to support monitoring and mitigation strategies for microplastic pollution. Identified priority research areas include: (1) Standardised analytical methods for textile microfibres and nanofibres; (2) Ecotoxicological studies using environmentally realistic concentrations; (3) Studies tracking the fate of microplastics in complex food webs; and (4) Refined indicators for microfibre impacts in apparel and home textile sustainability assessment tools.

The elimination or reduction of barriers to the growth of T&A sector helps in balancing three dimensions of sustainability (economic, environmental, and social). The purpose of the present investigation is to identify and model the critical challenges to sustainable development in the textile and apparel sector. With this view, fourteen critical challenges to the sustainable development of the case sector were identified through literature and expert opinion survey, and their cause–effect relationship was established using the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method. Results of the study highlighted that a lack of effective governmental policies and poor infrastructure were the most significant barriers demanding the maximum attention of the decision-makers for achieving sustainability in the case sector. The findings of the study are intended to guide the decision and policy-makers in understanding the influence of barriers to the sustainable development of the case sector, and for developing new strategies/policies or modifying the existing ones. Also, a few significant recommendations have been provided for improving the overall performance of the case supply chain.
