In 2023, the NATO Vilnius Summit was the major political event in Lithuania that attracted significant global media attention. In addition, Lithuania underwent local elections and faced a municipal expenses scandal that nearly brought down the government. Nevertheless, the Cabinet remained stable with only one minister being replaced.

The “Mutual Influence” Between Buddhism and Political Factors in Its Spread and Development in Japan

Since Buddhism was introduced to Japan in the 6th century – through individual efforts like Sima Da from China’s Southern Liang Dynasty and the official introduction by King Seong of Baekje from the Korean Peninsula – its spread and development in Japan have been closely intertwined with the political environment. [Show full abstract] during the Kofun period, Prince Shotoku’s promulgation of the Seventeen-Article Constitution that advocated respect for the “Three Treasures” in the Asuka period, the introduction of the clerical system in the Nara period, the division during the Muromachi period, and the implementation of the temple registration system in the Edo period all reflect Buddhism’s fluctuating influence and religious status in Japan. This paper primarily examines the political changes, and regime shifts during key periods, such as the Kofun, Asuka, Nara, and Kamakura periods, to explore how political factors—including government religious policies, socioeconomic conditions, and national political landscapes—impacted the spread and localization of Buddhism in Japan. It further analyzes how Buddhism, in turn, influenced Japan’s political environment, revealing the “mutual influence” between Buddhism and political factors throughout Japanese history.

Abstention has long been treated as a residual category in electoral research. However, a research interest in understanding non-voters emerged in the 1990s following declines in turnout in the 1980s. Existing research on non-voters largely focusses on socio-economic attributes (e.g. education), demographic characteristics (e.g. age) and political attitudes (e.g. political apathy) to explain ... [Show full abstract] abstention. This study explores how non-voters understand politics and the political process. It draws inspiration from studies of political culture, such as those by Fuchs (2002) and Rohe (1984), and uses data from eight focus group discussions conducted with 52 total participants who reported not voting during the 2022 North Rhine-Westphalian state elections. The analysis reveals that participants focus primarily on the output dimension of the political process and that input dimensions are secondary. At the same time, participants report a lack of representation by political decision-makers and display limited political knowledge.

[Show full abstract] counterweight to political parties, evidencing a structural gap in the so-called representative democracies. Objective. In this context, the study seeks to analyze the importance of social movements in the construction of modern ethical-politicalsystems. Methodology. The research has a qualitative approach based on aliterature review from a conceptual and categorical basis. The concepts addressed include political systems, crisis of representation and plurality of identities, while the categories include democratization of power, loss of legitimacy of traditional political structures and recognition of diversity. Results. Social movements have contributed to reconfiguring power relations, promoting greater inclusion, justice and democratic sustainability, this as a consequence of a distrust in institutions and governance structures. Conclusions. It is concluded that social movements are a key element in the development of the so-called modern democracies in Latin America, since their participation generates spaces of representation and agency for socially and historically excluded groups in Latin America.

Political, not (just) legal judgement: studying EU institutional balance

This article presents two related arguments. First, the limits of doctrinal analysis cut deeper than many EU lawyers realise. Most would probably accept that legal doctrine does not determine every legal dispute, but lawyers studying EU institutional balance often still assume that it can be deduced from the positive law what is good institutional practice. This paper argues instead that the ... [Show full abstract] allocation of EU institutional authority cannot be determined by the exercise of legal judgement, but instead requires the exercise of political judgement on the relative merits of different institutions. Second, this means that political and normative discourses and disciplines cannot be assumed to fall outside the domain of legal scholarship. What we need instead is a distinctive kind of legal scholarship that interweaves doctrinal analysis with normative political theory, broadly conceived. I will argue that political theory, in addition to evaluative value, has adjudicative value, provided that our theories are sensitive to the EU’s social and political setting and the constraints this setting imposes on what is realistically feasible.
