Abstract

The monograph focuses on a critical analysis of the entire body of ECtHR case law on domestic violence against women and its gender-sensitive development over more than 15 years – with both progress and setbacks. The influence as well as the regulatory content of the Istanbul Convention (Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence) are discussed in detail, with a brief comparison of implementation efforts in German and English law. Finally, EU accession to the Istanbul Convention in 2023 is discussed as a milestone in European human rights protection, and the EU’s own legislation in the area of violence against women is examined.
