Navigating Emerging Challenges in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in Africa

Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are becoming more popular globally, which makes Africa a potential hub for innovation and development in these fields. However, for the full benefits of these technologies to be realized, it is vital to understand and deal with the unique challenges and barriers that make it hard for them to be used and integrated in Africa. This chapter presents an ... [Show full abstract] overview of the current state of robotics and AI in Africa and explores the challenges associated with their adoption, including infrastructure limitations, inadequate technical expertise, and ethical considerations. It further discusses potential strategies for overcoming these challenges, such as investment in infrastructure and education, international collaboration, and the development of ethical frameworks for AI. Finally, the chapter suggests some future directions for continued attention and investment in the responsible and equitable development of AI and robotics in Africa to benefit stagnant and slow-growing African economies.

This chapter focuses on the biases and contradictions associated with the operations of the international credit rating agencies in Africa. It argues that the Big Three rating agencies, namely, Fitch Investment, Moody’s, and Standard & Poor’s are not neutral arbiters of financial, political, and economic risks on the continent as they claim to be. On the contrary, the three are part of the global ... [Show full abstract] financial infrastructure that is responsible for the exploitation and marginalisation of the African countries in the global economy. Their bias qualifies them as enablers of financial imperialism and sustainers of international financial subordination (IFS) rather than professional bodies that promote investment and trade in Africa. For Moyo, the rating agencies are driven by the global elite whose interests are well-served when Africa remains the Lilliputian of the world. He concludes this chapter by stressing that the African Union (AU) should lead the process of establishing a reputable Pan-African Credit Rating Agency that will professionally serve the interest of African economies and the rest of the Global South clients that are currently short-changed by imperial rating agencies.

Against this backdrop, this article analyses the relation between Pakistan and Balochistan in general and the impact of CPEC on this region in particular. It is argued that the CPEC project will further entrench unfortunate patterns, foremost the economic exploitation of Balochistan and political sidelining of the Baloch people.

Information has become the driving force in the global economy in the latter part of the twentieth century and has helped to successfully meet the needs of the fast changing business and higher education environments. Coupled to this, developments in information communication technology have made it possible to address many of the new challenges in the information environment and many other ... [Show full abstract] fields. However, it is an expensive exercise to provide sufficient infrastructure for information communication technology to be able to play the game successfully. It is this latter aspect that has become a major challenge for countries in the developing world. Fortunately there are many projects in place or under development that support this challenge. One of these is the role that the Economic Commission for Africa is playing in the digitization of the African continent. In this presentation I would like to focus on the work of the Open Society Institute (OSI), which is part of the Soros Foundation Network, and the work which it is doing in assisting developing countries to get access to a wide variety of mainly full text electronic information and then to elaborate on the challenges this creates for developing countries.

This chapter identifies four clusters of nations based on state of development, in order to highlight significant qualitative differences that may call for different law and policies. The first cluster comprises the least developed sub-Saharan African countries with the most resource-challenged competition authorities, such as Benin and Togo. The second cluster compromises nations that have ... [Show full abstract] advanced economically to a perceptibly higher level. The third cluster is a “group” of one—South Africa. With all of its challenges, the South African competition regime is as close to a gold standard as there is in sub-Saharan Africa. Finally, for comparison, the fourth cluster comprises the developed countries, led in particular by the European Union and the United States. These nations have open economies, fairly robust markets, good infrastructure, and good institutions. The chapter proceeds to identify, from the point of view of each of the clusters, the most fitting competition framework nationally and globally. The chapter proposes how the divergences can be brought into sympathy.
