The Relationship Between Mobile Phone Use and Creative Ideation Among College Students: The Roles of Critical Thinking and Creative Self-Efficacy

Abstract

Studies vary on the correlation between mobile phone use and creativity: some find no link, whereas others suggest a positive association with divergent thinking. Therefore, we explored the extent of the link between mobile phone use and creative ideation, and the mediating roles of critical thinking and creative self-efficacy. A total of 998 college students from three universities were investigated by using the mobile phone addiction type scale, critical thinking scale, creative self-efficacy scale, and creative ideation scale. The results showed that: (a) mobile phone use was positively related to creative ideation among college students, (b) critical thinking mediated the relationship between mobile phone use and creative ideation, (c) creative self-efficacy also mediated the relationship between mobile phone use and creative ideation, and (d) critical thinking and creative self-efficacy played a chain mediating role in the relationship between mobile phone use and creative ideation.

Smartphones and social media platforms have become an omnipresent source for entertainment, communication, and distraction. Prior work has linked social media use and smartphone addiction with poorer mental health, less satisfying social relationships, and worse executive functioning. It is not yet well known, however, whether there is an association between social media use and creativity. The present study examined the associations between divergent thinking, real-life creative accomplishments, active and passive social media use, and smartphone addiction. Results indicated that greater originality of divergent thinking was associated with significantly less frequent engagement in social media use in an active manner (e.g., expressing ideas and opinions, creating content) and lower self-reported smartphone addiction. Real-life creative accomplishments, on the other hand, were associated with significantly more frequent engagement in active social media use. Passive social media use (e.g., general browsing, observing others’ content) was not associated with either divergent thinking or with real-life creative accomplishments. Thus, although less frequent engagement in active social media use may protect people’s ability to think in a divergent, original manner, more frequent engagement may enhance one’s social connections, resulting in real-world accomplishments.

Researchers have developed various versions of scales to measure mobile phone addiction. Existing scales, however, focus primarily on the overall level of mobile phone addiction but do not distinguish the potential differences between different types of mobile phone addiction. There is a lack of established scales that can measure different types of mobile phone addiction. The present study aimed to uncover the specific types of mobile phone addiction and develop a Mobile Phone Addiction Type Scale (MPATS) for adolescents and young adults. Adolescents and young adults from two high schools and two universities in Central and South China participated in our study. A total of 108 mobile phone addicts (Mage = 17.60 years, SD = 3.568 years; 60.185% males) were interviewed to uncover the specific types of mobile phone addiction. Data from 876 adolescents and young adults (Mage = 16.750 years, SD = 3.159 years; 49.087% males) were tested for item discrimination and exploratory factor analysis. Data from 854 adolescents and young adults (Mage = 16.750 years, SD = 3.098 years; 50.820% males) were analyzed for construct validity, convergent validity, criterion-related validity, and internal consistency reliability. The 26-item Mobile Phone Addiction Type Scale (MPATS) was developed with four factors named mobile social networking addiction, mobile game addiction, mobile information acquisition addiction, and mobile short-form video addiction. The four-factor, 26-item MPATS revealed good construct validity, convergent validity, criterion-related validity, and internal consistency reliability. The new scale is suitable for measuring different types of mobile phone addiction in adolescents and young adults. Limitations and implications are discussed.

Mounting evidence suggests that smartphone overuse/smartphone use disorder (SmUD) is associated with negative affectivity. Given a large number of smartphone users worldwide (currently about 4.7 billion) and the fact that many individuals carry their smartphones around 24/7, it is of high importance to better understand the phenomenon of smartphone overuse. Based on the interaction of person-affect-cognition-execution (I-PACE) model, we investigated the links between SmUD and the personality traits, neuroticism and conscientiousness, which represent two vulnerability factors robustly linked to SmUD according to a recent meta-analysis. Beyond that, we tested the effects of mind-wandering (MW) and fear of missing out (FoMO) in the relation between individual differences in personality and tendencies towards SmUD. The effective sample comprised 414 study participants (151 men and 263 women, age M = 33.6, SD = 13.5). By applying a structural equation modeling (SEM) technique, we observed that the associations of higher neuroticism and lower conscientiousness with higher levels of SmUD were mediated by higher scores in mind-wandering. These novel findings can help to understand the associations between personality and SmUD in more detail.

A 2013 article reported two experiments suggesting that the mere presence of a cellphone (vs. a notebook) can impair the relationship quality between strangers. The purpose of the present research is twofold: (1) closely replicate this article’s findings, and (2) examine whether there may be an impact of the mere presence of a phone on creativity, whether at a group- or an individual- level. In two experiments (N = 356 participants, 136 groups), we followed the original procedure in the 2013 article. In particular, groups of participants who had never seen each other before the study had a conversation in the mere presence of either a smartphone or a notebook. The participants then carried out creative tasks, in groups (Studies 1 and 2) or alone (Study 1). In both studies, we failed to replicate the original results on relationship quality. We also failed to find any effect of the mere presence of a phone on creativity. We discuss possible reasons which may have caused differences between our results and the original ones. Our main conclusion is an effect of the mere presence of a phone on relationship quality and creativity is at minimum harder to find than what was previously assumed in the literature. More generally, this research contributes to qualify the view that smartphones are harmful.

Background. The excessive use of Internet-based technologies has received a considerable attention over the past years. Despite this, there is relatively little research on how general Internet usage patterns at and outside of school as well as on weekends may be associated with mathematics achievement. Moreover, only a handful of studies have implemented a longitudinal or repeated-measures approach on this research question. The aim of the current study was to fill that gap. Specifically, we investigated the potential associations of Internet use at and outside of school as well as on weekends with mathematics test performance in both high- and low-stakes testing conditions over a period of 3 years in a representative sample of Estonian teenagers. Methods. PISA 2015 survey data in conjunction with national educational registry data were used for the current study. Specifically, Internet use at and outside of school as well as on weekends were queried during the PISA 2015 survey. In addition, the data set included PISA mathematics test results from 4113 Estonian 9th-grade students. Furthermore, 3758 of these students also had a 9th-grade national mathematics exam score from a couple of months after the PISA survey. Finally, of these students, the results of 12th-grade mathematics national exam scores were available for 1612 and 1174 students for “wide” (comprehensive) and “narrow” (less comprehensive) mathematics exams, respectively. Results. The results showed that the rather low-stakes PISA mathematics test scores correlated well with the high-stakes national mathematics exam scores obtained from the 9th (completed a couple of months after the PISA survey) and 12th grade (completed approximately 3 years after the PISA survey), with correlation values ranging from r = .438 to .557. Furthermore, socioeconomic status index was positively correlated with all mathematics scores (ranging from r = .162 to .305). Controlled for age and gender, the results also showed that students who reported using Internet the longest tended to have, on average, the lowest mathematics scores in all tests across 3 years. Although effect sizes were generally small, they seemed to be more pronounced in Internet use at school. Conclusions. Based on these results, one may notice that significantly longer time spent on Internet use at and outside of school as well as on weekends may be associated with poorer mathematics performance. These results are somewhat in line with research outlining the potentially negative associations between longer time spent on digital technology use and daily life outcomes.

Various books and popular media outlets claim that mindless smartphone use can impair creativity, yet few studies have tested this idea. We conducted a survey and three correlational studies focused on divergent thinking, the mindful ability to generate creative responses to open-ended problems. Most of the 48,000 participants surveyed thought that smartphone use reduced creativity. This view was consistent with the negative correlations we found between divergent thinking and both screen time and problematic smartphone use ((Formula presented.) to −.35) in an exploratory sample of 62 university students. However, in two pre-registered replications with larger and more diverse samples (N = 294 and 16,932), we found at most tiny correlations between measures of divergent thinking or creative achievement and several types of smartphone use ((Formula presented.) to.09). Thus, the link between smartphone use and creativity may be weaker or more nuanced than is commonly believed.

Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) is associated with self-reported problematic smartphone use (PSU) severity, but there is little investigation that includes objectively measured smartphone use. The aim of the current study was to provide insights into this domain. We combined the partially published data from two previous U.S.-based studies with college student samples that tracked smartphone use data with a different focus from the current study. Both data sets included socio-demographic measures, FoMO and PSU scale scores, and data for objectively measured screentime and frequency of screen unlocks over a week, amounting up to more than a thousand observations. FoMO had a strong correlation with self-reported PSU severity; however, FoMO was not associated with objectively measured smartphone use variables. FoMO did not predict behavioral smarthpone use over a week in multilevel modeling for repeated measures. Even though FoMO is a strong predictor of self-reported PSU severity, it does not predict objectively measured smartphone use.

Numerous psychological variables are associated with self-reported/estimated smartphone use in college students. However, less is known about how additional psychological variables involving academic study and productivity relate to objectively-measured smartphone usage, such as procrastination, surface learning, and academic productivity. We administered psychological surveys to 103 college students from an American university and collected their objective smartphone use data using the iPhone's Screentime feature. Levels of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms, as well as greater procrastination and surface learning, mildly-to-moderately inversely correlated with the number of objectively-measured phone pickups/screen-unlocks. Academic productivity moderately inversely correlated with objectively-measured smartphone use minutes. Unemployed students had more pickups and received more notifications. Results are discussed in the context of theory on pathways to excessive internet use, and the threaded cognition model of cog-nitive task interference.
