The jaspers located in the Topçam Mountain, Tepeyurt region (Tokat, Turkey), were formed at green-colored metavolcanic levels within Permian–Triassic schists. The sizes of the jaspers generally vary from a few cm to 1.5 m, and their colors vary from grayish–reddish–brownish/blackish tones depending on the increase in the amount of Fe and Mn elements they contain. According to thin section and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis examinations, it was determined that the composition of jaspers includes quartz, hematite, calcite, and pyrite. As stated by the Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (WDXRF) analysis results, it was observed that the amount of SiO2 in jaspers was 82.5%, and the amount of Fe2O3 was 15.5%. According to Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis results, Fe and Mn impurities, which are thought to cause the color of jaspers, as well as the amount of Fe (6975.5 ppm–46,893.9 ppm–96,431.1 ppm) and the amount of Mn (935.9–3219.7–6040.4 ppm), caused a darkening in color tones (grayish–reddish–brownish/blackish). Cabochon cutting applications were made of jaspers taken from the study area. As a result of these applications, it has been determined that jaspers can be used as gemstones due to their properties, such as their workability, polish retention, and color and light reflection.

The Equotip surface hardness tester is becoming a popular method for rock and stone weathering research. In order to improve the reliability of Equotip for on-site application this study tested four porous limestones under laboratory conditions. The range of stone porosity was chosen to represent likely porosities found in weathered limestones in the field. We consider several key issues: (i) its suitability for soft and porous stones; (ii) the type of probe required for specific on-site applications; (iii) appropriate (non-parametrical) statistical methods for Equotip data; (iv) sufficient sampling size. This study shows that the Equotip is suitable for soft and porous rock and stone. From the two tested probes the DL probe has some advantages over the D probe as it correlates slightly better with open porosity and allows for more controlled sampling in recessed areas and rough or curved areas. We show that appropriate sampling sizes and robust non-parametric methods for subsequent data evaluation can produce meaningful measures of rock surface hardness derived from the Equotip. The novel Hybrid dynamic hardness, a combination of two measuring procedures [single impact method (SIM) and repeated impact method (RIM)], has been adapted and is based on median values to provide a more robust data evaluation. For the tested stones in this study we propose a sample size of 45 readings (for a confidence level of 95%). This approach can certainly be transferred to stone and rock with similar porosities and hardness. Our approach also allows for consistent comparisons to be made across a wide variety of studies in the fields of rock weathering and stone deterioration research.

Soluble salts contaminating limestones and marbles used as building and artistic materials play a relevant role in the deterioration processes of the substrates. Although desalination operations are carried out prior to protection and/or consolidation, a certain amount of salt remains inside the stones. When a surface treatment is chosen, the evaluation of its compatibility with the residual saline content is therefore needed. In the present work, specimens of three lithotypes characterized by a very different porosity –Lecce stone and Ançã stone, both highly porous, and the less porous Gioia marble – were contaminated with salt and then treated with two protective products, the organic polydimethylsiloxane and the inorganic ammonium oxalate (NH4)2(COO)2·H2O. Aim of the research was to select the best application conditions of the two products on salt-laden stone specimens, investigating as well the dependence of the protective action on the procedures adopted to apply the products. The performance of different concentrations and contact times of the products was tested in the laboratory, paying special attention to the possible drawbacks due to the salt. The study was carried out applying different methods: colorimetric measurements before and after the application of the products; water absorption by capillarity to investigate variations in water-interaction features; SEM–EDS analyses to evaluate the distribution of products and salt on the substrates.

In this research, some physical and mechanical changes in İscehisar andesites produced in Afyonkarahisar region were investigated because of destructive effects of salts. For this purpose, petrographic-mineralogical (polarizing microscope, XRD), chemical analysis, pore diameter distribution and physico-mechanical properties of andesites were determined. In the second step, the same experiments were repeated in the case of andesite samples using water repellent and protective chemical substances to prevent water absorption and consequently salt crystallization. The amounts of decomposition due to salt crystallization events of the andesite samples were determined by the changes in mechanical and physical properties like weight loss, ultrasonic velocity and uniaxial compressive. Mean dry weight loss was 0.3695% in normal samples and 0,186% mass increase in water-repellent samples. Compressive strength values were found to be 32% for normal samples and 37% for water repellent chemically treated samples.

Marbles are widely used as construction materials because of their high resistivity to common conditions, and to their aesthetic appeal. Aesthetic qualities such as color, gloss and polishability are important for rock used as constructions materials. But marbles as building stones show complex weathering phenomena. Thermal effects are important weathering factors affecting the aesthetical and physico-mechanical properties of marbles. This study assesses changes to surface aesthetic properties of some marble samples due to heat. For this purpose thermal ageing and thermal shock cycles were inflicted on six types of marble samples of differing colors. Marble samples of shiny surfaces were prepared. In thermal shock cycles, samples were heated up to 105 °C for 18 h then placed for 6 h in distilled water. In thermal ageing cycles, the samples were placed in an oven for 18 h then allowed to cool for 6 h at room temperature. At the end of cycles 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20, gloss measurements were recorded; at the end of the last cycles color changes were evaluated. The relationships between gloss and color parameters were also investigated. Thermal shock has more important effects on marble surface properties than the thermal ageing cycle. L∗ and b∗ parameters constituted an important effect on glossiness and these parameters were strong indicators for predicting gloss loss.

Since early antiquity dimension stones have been used as building materials due to their natural beauty and availability, and the diversity of their applications has increased ever since. As any other building material, dimension stones today have to fulfill the physical and technical requirements demanded by architects. This chapter focuses on the physical and mechanical properties of dimension stones, while emphasizing that stones are an old, but still modern building material. Among the parameters discussed here are water absorption, thermal conductivity and expansion, hygric and hydric properties, strength, abrasion, the more modern aspect of breaking load at the dowel hole, and ultrasonic wave velocities. Extensive data sets and a variety of case studies reveal relationships between the physical properties and the internal fabric elements of the dimension stones, such as sedimentary layering, metamorphic foliation, pores, and microcracks. In addition, these fabric elements are often responsible for the weathering behavior of the dimension stones, which not only affects the heritage but also the safety of modern buildings. This is illustrated through laboratory experiments and case studies.

This paper presents a computational model coupling heat, water and salt ion transport, salt crystallization, deformation and damage in porous materials. We focus on crystallization-induced damage. The theory of poromechanics is employed to relate stress, induced by crystallization processes or hygro-thermal origin, to the material's mechanical response. A non-local formulation is developed to describe the crystallization kinetics. The model performance is illustrated by simulating the damage caused by sodium chloride crystallization in a porous limestone. The results are compared with experimental observations based on neutron and X-ray imaging. The simulation results suggest that the crystallization kinetics in porous materials have to be accurately understood in order to be able to control salt damage. The results show that the effective stress caused by salt crystallization depends not only on the crystallization pressure but also on the amount of salt crystals, which is determined by the spreading of crystals in the porous material and the crystallization kinetics.

The diversity of volcanic tuff buildings standing in Western Mexico is large, therefore, it was considered relevant to evaluate and synthetize different stone consolidants that could be applied in the regional weather conditions and renew the stability of those buildings; since the commercial products are developed and tested in foreign countries, and in some cases, when applied under the weather conditions of Mexico, the results differ from those reported. For the altered tuffs from Santa Mónica's Church in Guadalajara, Mexico, the deterioration mechanism of the local tuff was determined, thus a silicate and aluminosilicate consolidants were synthesized by the sol-gel method and applied to altered tuffs in order to evaluate their performance from structural to macroscopic level.

A method of hardness testing is presented based on the measurement of the kinetic energy components of impact and rebound of the testing body. The testing instrument consists of an impact device and an electronic indicator device. The impact and rebound velocities are measured in a contactless manner by means of an electromagnetic transmitter and the result from dividing the rebound velocity by the impact velocity is taken as the measure of the hardness. The method is characterized by good reproducibility and increased measurement range; it also allows impact testing from any direction without loss of accuracy. A test takes less than 2 seconds and the indicated value remains visible until eliminated by the next impact. Applications include the hardness testing of large heavy workpieces or those which are not easily accessible.
