Wellbeing guidance for researchers, teams and supervisors: gold, silver and bronze standards

Abstract

Guidance on managing researcher wellbeing when undertaking emotionally challenging research-grouped into gold, silver and bronze categories. While the capacity of researchers to manage the emotional challenges of their work is influenced by their personal attributes and resilience, it's also affected by the level of support they receive from the surrounding systems. Therefore, a researcher's personal knowledge, skills, and experience are important, as well as the effectiveness of their supervisors/managers in project design and team management. Additionally, the level of positive interactions within their teams and the amount of resources and thought institutions invest in the wellbeing of their researchers are equally significant. Based on a review of existing literature and our research findings, we have created a list of recommendations for interventions to support staff doing emotionally challenging research .
