The purpose of this paper is to describe the model of a mathematics and science staff development cooperative and focus on the evaluation of the mathematics component. The Mathematics and Science Education Cooperative (MSEC) was a comprehensive, long-range staff development program to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics and science at the elementary school level. The special features of MSEC were (a) it provided year-round, multiyear involvement, and (b) each year an affective strand was included. Statistically significant student mathematics results from the years 1998–2000 are presented.

Many conferences and training events are organised by individuals who have little experience of doing so. Some have had the task thrust upon them without being offered adequate training, and have little idea of the time, experience and care needed to plan and manage events effectively. Each conference is different, and each can present a new problem to the unprepared, even to the most experienced conference organiser. This book provides immediate, accessible advice on how to run an effective event, featuring a wealth of practical tips, guidelines, case studies, action checklists, and useful sample material and templates. All areas of organisation are covered, including: managing, planning, contingency planning, targeting, costing and budgeting, housekeeping, administering, assuring the quality of content, evaluating, disseminating and ensuring continuity. © Fiona Campbell, Alison Robinson, Sally Brown and Phil Race, 2003.

The challenge of organizing a successful conference is a tremendous commitment requiring extensive preparation and teamwork. It is tempting but dangerous to underestimate the details needed to coordinate an outstanding event. Conferences follow a natural life cycle from proposal, gaining administrative support, planning, implementing, and then finally evaluating outcomes. These guidelines identify the tasks and areas of responsibilities required including setting objectives, budgeting, selecting a venue, publicity, programming, and working with vendors.
