Abstract

ABSTRACT: Thevetia peruviana is an evergreen shrub in the family Apocynanceae. It is extremely poisonous in nature, with the kernels being the most dangerous part. The shrub or small tree is with yellow or orange-yellow trumpet-like flowers and deep red/black fruit that resembles a Chinese lucky nut. The cardiac glycosides in yellow oleander are the active ingredients. The milky sap of T. peruviana includes a substance called thevetin. Thevetin is a potent toxin for the heart. Thevotoxin is similar to the glycosides of digitalis in action and is less poisonous than thevetin. Strychnine-like effects are shared by cerberin. Several child deaths have been reported by this species. Burning and tingling in the mouth and tongue, dryness of the throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, dilated pupils, irregular heartbeat that resembles the symptoms of digitalis. Sleepiness, collapse, coma, and death are the possible indicators. Tetanic convulsions are occasionally observed. The entire plant is poisonous, and ingestion of its kernels and leaves commonly occurs in suicidal and homicidal poisoning. Women in certain parts of India use the root and seeds of yellow oleander to commit suicide and induce abortion. Cattle poisoning occurs when crushed seeds are mixed with fodder and fed to the animal. Yellow Oleander poisoning cases are referred to FSLs for identification and analysis. Phytochemical, Pharmacological, Morphological and Molecular studies on this plant have been reviewed to prepare a comprehensive reference document for forensic scientists. Keywords: Digitalis, Glycosides, Homicide, Kernels, Suicide.

Numerous instruments have been created to measure the construct, organizational commitment, ever since its conceptualization, as scope, specificity and possibility of its empirical measurement has also been a subject of various theoretical examinations. A literature review of research articles, accessed from EBSCOHOST, J-GATE and Google Scholar databases, measuring, Organizational Commitment have been undertaken, with an established reliability and validity. After identifying 195 relevant studies, 37 were short listed based on inclusion criteria. Empirical articles in English, having keywords in the 'Title/Keywords' and measuring instruments used in minimum two studies, have been included. Final scrutiny led to identification of seven instruments and analysis of three different & extensively used measuring instruments. Literature review highlighted, need for scholars to acquaint themselves about inadequacies of these instruments as it aids their refinement and study of commitment. Future research on the subject needs to focus on integration of organizational and personal characteristics affecting Organizational Commitment, develop a model concerning these relationships and their implications.

Background Job satisfaction in health care has a great impact as it affects quality, productivity, effectiveness, and healthcare costs. In fact, it is an indicator of the well-being and quality of life of the organization’s employees, as it has been variously linked with increased performance and negatively to absenteeism and turnover. Better knowledge of healthcare employees’ job satisfaction and performance can directly contribute to the quality of the services provided to patients and is critical for the success of organizations. Methods The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, split-half reliability, exploratory factor and confirmatory factor analysis were employed to assess the reliability and validity of JSS. Results Six underlying dimensions were extracted (benefits and salary, management’s attitude, supervision, communication, nature of work, and colleagues’ support). Internal consistency reliability was satisfactory since Cronbach’s alpha for the overall scale was 0.81 and for the various dimensions ranged from 0.61 to 0.81, respectively. Exploratory factor analysis showed a KMO value of 0.912. The confirmatory factor analysis indicated good fit: SRMR = 0.050, RMSEA = 0.055, IFI = 0.906 and CFI = 0.906. Conclusion Job satisfaction is a multidimensional construct that encompasses different facets of satisfaction. There is a lack of consensus as to which factors are more important and a researcher may find satisfaction with some factors while at the same time dissatisfaction with others. Our findings are significant for improving our understanding of the nature and assessment of job satisfaction in the Greek healthcare context, providing a more stable ground in a rapidly changing environment. A short JSS developed that could be much more widely used in the future.

This is the new edition of the highly successful practical guide for clinicians developing tools to measure subjective states, attitudes or non-tangible outcomes in their patients. It is widely used by people from many disciplines, who have only a limited knowledge of statistics. This thoroughly updated edition of Health Measurement Scales, Third Edition gives more details on cognitive requirements in answering questions, and how this influences scale development. There is now an expanded discussion of generalizability theory, a completely revised chapter on Item Response Theory and many revisions are included, based on the latest research findings. These features combine to provide the most up-to-date guide to measuring scale development available. It synthesizes the theory of scale construction with practical advice, culled from the literature and the authors’ experience, about how to develop and validate measurement scales to be used in the health sciences. The theory goes into issues of reliability, generalizability theory, validity, the measurement of change, the cognitive requirements of answering questions, and item response theory. Practical issues cover devising the items, biases that may affect the responses, pre-testing and weeding out poorly performing items, combining items into scales, setting cut points, and the practical issues of using scales in various ways, such as face-to-face interviews; mailed or telephone-administered surveys; and over the internet. One chapter also discusses some of the ethical issues that scale developers and users should be aware of. Appendices lead the reader to other readings; sources of already developed scales and items; and a very brief introduction to exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis.

This paper critically analyses the effects of predatory publishing as a major contributor to misinformation and disinformation amongst academicians and learners in developing countries. The paper notes that predatory publishing poses a major hindrance in the struggles to enhance academic excellence. This paper established that predatory publishing has great consequences in the spread of misinformation and disinformation amongst academicians and Learners in Developing Countries. Some of the reasons that necessitate the increase in predatory publishing in developing countries are; the lack of proper policies or guidance on where research articles should or should not be published, the failure to embrace open access initiatives for visibility and dissemination of research outputs so as to discourage academic malpractice and unethical behaviors, lack of funds, poor or limited information literacy among other factors. The paper is unique in that it comprehensively analyses the concept of predatory journals with misinformation and disinformation in academic circles in the developing world, putting into consideration that most academic staff or researchers assume that whatever is on the web is genuine and absolute true information.
