Abstract

This study provides an in-depth analysis of the impact, effectiveness, and future prospects of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) in educational settings. The primary objective was to explore how these immersive technologies are reshaping learning and teaching landscapes. Employing a systematic literature review and content analysis methodology, the research analyzed recent scholarly articles and reports from 2014 to 2024, focusing on AR/VR applications in education. The findings reveal that AR and VR significantly enhance learning experiences by offering immersive, interactive, and engaging environments. These technologies have been shown to improve student engagement, knowledge retention, and skill development. AR enriches traditional educational materials by overlaying digital information onto the real world, while VR facilitates experiential learning in virtual environments. However, challenges such as high costs, technical infrastructure requirements, and content development complexities were identified as barriers to widespread adoption. The study predicts a future where AR and VR technologies will continue to evolve, focusing on enhancing user experience, improving accessibility, and integrating seamlessly into educational curricula. Recommendations for stakeholders, including educators, administrators, and policymakers, emphasize the need for investment in infrastructure, educator training, content development, and collaboration with technology companies. Lastly, AR and VR technologies hold great promise for transforming educational practices. Addressing current challenges and leveraging opportunities will be key to realizing their full potential in enhancing teaching and learning experiences. ABSTRACT

focused on enhancing traditional learning methods. Devi (2023) highlights the initial use of AR in
three-dimensional anatomy education, a pioneering step that set the stage for subsequent
advancements. The period between 1995 and 2009 saw a surge in AR studies, indicating a growing
interest in exploring its educational potential (Devi, 2023). This era laid the groundwork for the
diverse applications of AR and VR in education we witness today.
The educational landscape has witnessed a significant shift with the advent of VR, which has
redefined the concept of immersive learning. VR's ability to create virtual environments has
opened up new avenues for experiential learning. Students can now explore historical sites,
simulate complex scientific experiments, and engage in interactive learning scenarios, all within
the confines of a classroom. This shift towards an immersive educational experience is not just
about engagement but also about enhancing knowledge retention and developing practical skills
(Shankar et al., 2023).
AR, complementing VR, overlays digital information onto the real world, enriching traditional
educational materials. This technology has transformed textbooks into interactive learning
experiences and field trips into guided, informative journeys. AR's impact extends to language
learning, where it provides instant translations and pronunciation guides, and to data visualization,
making complex information more accessible and understandable (Shankar et al., 2023).
The rise of AR and VR in education is not just a technological advancement but also a pedagogical
one. These technologies foster collaborative learning environments, allowing students and
educators to interact in ways previously unimaginable. They have also opened new doors for
special needs education, offering customizable experiences to cater to individual learning
requirements (Shankar et al., 2023).

to revolutionize education. The analysis also underscores the multidisciplinary nature of AR and
VR, with applications extending beyond education into fields such as medicine, arts, and
engineering.
In summary, the emergence of AR and VR in educational settings represents a paradigm shift in

The objectives are;
1. To evaluate the emergence of AR/VR in educational contexts.
2. To analyze the impact and effectiveness of AR/VR in learning.
3. To identify challenges and barriers in AR/VR adoption.

infrastructural changes. As AR and VR technologies continue to evolve, their effective
implementation in educational settings will depend on the concerted efforts of educators,
administrators, and policymakers to create an environment conducive to innovative and inclusive
learning.
CONCLUSIONS
The study has provided a comprehensive analysis of the impact and effectiveness of Augmented
Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) in educational settings. It has become clear that AR and VR
technologies have revolutionized the way learning is experienced. These technologies have not
only enhanced the engagement and interaction within the learning environment but have also
significantly contributed to the improvement of knowledge retention and the development of
practical skills. AR, with its ability to overlay digital information onto the real world, has enriched
traditional educational materials, while VR has opened up new avenues for exploration and
interaction in virtual environments.
Looking forward, AR and VR in education are poised at a juncture of challenges and opportunities.
The challenges are primarily centered around the high costs associated with these technologies,
the need for robust technical infrastructure, and the development of relevant and effective content.
However, the opportunities that lie ahead are immense. AR and VR have the potential to
fundamentally transform traditional teaching methodologies, cater to a wide array of learning

effectively. There is also a need for a concerted focus on developing high-quality, curriculum-
tailored educational content. Collaborations between educational institutions and technology
companies could be pivotal in keeping abreast of the latest developments in AR and VR.
Additionally, ensuring that AR and VR tools are accessible and inclusive for all students, including
those with disabilities, is crucial.
Future research in the field of AR and VR for education should aim to conduct longitudinal studies
to assess the long-term impact of these technologies on learning outcomes. Exploring the
application of AR and VR across diverse educational settings, including K-12, higher education,
and vocational training, could provide deeper insights. Investigating effective pedagogical
strategies for the integration of AR and VR into various subjects and curricula is also essential. A
thorough cost-benefit analysis of implementing AR and VR technologies in educational
institutions would be beneficial. Moreover, examining the ethical implications, particularly
concerning data privacy and security, is imperative in the context of AR and VR usage in education.
Finally, the potential of AR and VR technologies to transform the educational landscape is
immense. By addressing the challenges and capitalizing on the opportunities these technologies
present, educators and policymakers can significantly enhance the quality and effectiveness of

The Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy is a strategic initiative of the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology to revolutionize the higher education system through increasing student learning flexibility and freedom. The purpose of this study is to explore the academic landscape related to the MBKM policy through a bibliometric approach to identify research trends, publication patterns, academic collaboration, and dominant themes that appear in the scientific literature. The method used is bibliometric analysis by utilizing Biblioshiny, VOSviewer, and Microsoft Excel software on 210 documents obtained from the Dimensions database with the keywords “independent learning” and “higher education”. The results showed a significant increase in publications since 2020 with an annual growth rate of 92.56%, indicating high academic interest in MBKM. The top ten most cited articles raised issues of MBKM curriculum implementation, institutional adaptation challenges, and technology integration in learning. The analysis also revealed extensive collaboration between authors and institutions, as well as a diversity of keywords such as “flexible curriculum”, “project-based learning”, and “industry cooperation”. The discussion in this study highlights that while MBKM offers great potential in enhancing student skills, challenges such as faculty readiness, digital infrastructure, and institutional support still need to be addressed. Therefore, the results of this study provide important insights for higher education policy makers in designing more effective and sustainable MBKM implementation strategies.

With the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), intelligent machines are increasingly displaying “human-like personality,” shifting Human–Machine Interaction (HMI) from one-way guidance to interactive, multi-level dynamics. Trust plays a pivotal role in the development and maintenance of these evolving interactions. While personality traits have been recognized as key factors in shaping and enhancing interpersonal trust, their role in the development of static and dynamic trust in HMI remains underexplored. This study investigates how personality traits influence trust in HMI across two interaction modalities: Personal Computer (PC) and Virtual Reality (VR). By simulating real-world interaction scenarios, we examined the impact of personality traits on both static and dynamic trust, and explored the relationship between them. The results showed that in the PC modality, personality traits significantly affected both static and dynamic trust, with static trust serving as a strong predictor of dynamic trust. In the VR modality, personality traits significantly influenced static trust, and static trust again played a key role in shaping dynamic trust. These findings underscore the foundational importance of static trust in the evolution of trust in HMI, and highlight the need to consider individual personality differences and interaction modalities in the design of AI-driven interfaces to foster trust and promote long-term engagement.

The use of educational technology has extended throughout the globe and is now practically ubiquitous. Teachers are among the major users of educational technology. This study evaluates how educational technology affects the process of teaching and learning at Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University in Lyari, with a particular emphasis on how it affects teachers. This study sets out to investigate how educational technology functions in university-level teaching and learning. There were hypotheses developed, and a survey approach was used in the quantitative study design. A thorough examination of the literature review was carried out. La realidad virtual (RV) ha emergido como una herramienta innovadora en la educación, facilitando la enseñanza activa y el aprendizaje experiencial. El artículo tiene como objetivo evaluar la efectividad de la RV en la enseñanza activa y el aprendizaje experiencial, identificando sus beneficios, limitaciones y factores determinantes en el ámbito educativo. Se realizó una revisión sistemática siguiendo la metodología PRISMA. Se consultaron bases de datos como PubMed, Scopus y Web of Science (2010-2025). Se incluyeron estudios empíricos (ensayos clínicos, observacionales) sobre el impacto de la RV en el aprendizaje. La calidad metodológica se evaluó con ROB-2 y Newcastle-Ottawa. De 1,200 estudios identificados, 85 cumplieron los criterios de inclusión. Fueron seleccionados 22 artículos para la revisión sistemática. Los hallazgos indicaron que la RV mejora la retención de información, la motivación y la comprensión conceptual frente a métodos tradicionales. Se concluye que la RV potencia el aprendizaje experiencial y la enseñanza interactiva. Se requieren estudios adicionales para evaluar su accesibilidad y sostenibilidad en distintos contextos educativos.

The article is devoted to the problem and features of the use of virtual and augmented reality at general school. The integration of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in educational environment has opened up new possibilities for engaging and immersive learning experiences. This paper aims to explore the features of participants' interaction within an educational context using VR and AR technologies. To achieve the purpose of our study and also to clarify the problem of determining the features of interaction models of participants in the educational process of a general education institution using virtual and augmented reality we used the following methods: systematic and comparative analysis of pedagogical, psychological, philosophical and sociological works, methodological and specialized literature; analysis of the pedagogical experience of using virtual and augmented reality in general school; synthesis and generalization to formulate the main points of the study; interpretation of the research results. A research study was conducted in a general educational institution, where an educational project using virtual and augmented reality was developed and implemented. The purpose of the project was to investigate the issues surrounding the interaction among participants in the educational process when utilizing these technologies. The results of the questionnaire showed the following: the participants' interaction in the educational process with the use of VR needs improvement, methodological recommendations and research on the organization of this environment for various purposes, such as, for example, students' research of new educational material, performance of laboratory work, joint work of students on research, instructions for the teacher's activities in working with students in VR, etc.; the participants’ interaction in the educational process with the use of AR is best understood by teachers and students, they use both ready-made AR technologies and personally created ones. We concluded that the use of virtual and augmented reality technologies in the educational process provides a wealth of teaching and learning resources that can enhance the learning experience and free participants from limitations in time and space. However, the effective organization of interaction between participants in the educational process using VR and AR requires careful consideration of educational space and pedagogical and methodological recommendations.

Using Augment reality (AR) technologies and Virtual reality (VR) technologies in education is a new tendency. The aim of this study is to test the effect of AR and VR technologies on the development of students’ mathematics learning. Articles that met the inclusion criteria from a systematic database like Web of Science were included in the meta-analysis. A total of 20 research articles published from 2010 to 2023 were included in this study. The overall result showed that AR and VR technologies had a large positive impact (SMD=0.892, p 0.001) on students’ mathematics learning. Sub-group results showed that the effect were significantly moderated by outcome, school level, content area, but were not significantly moderated by technologies and experimental period. According to the results, some suggestions were given for the future studies.

With its immersive, interactive, and creative capabilities, virtual reality (VR) has been widely used in educational settings to provide students with challenging real-world experiences. As a result, interest in its effectiveness has grown. The goal of this meta-analysis is to examine how VR technology affects students' motivation to study. A comprehensive analysis of the literature up to December 2022 revealed 15 randomized controlled trials or quasi-experimental studies. These studies were also coded to examine the moderating effects of their features, such as types of learner engagement, learner stages, learning domains, types of VR technology, and the moderating effect of knowledge types. The results indicate a large effect of VR on student engagement in learning (g=0.85). Furthermore, the findings of the moderator analysis demonstrate that VR has a more significant impact on cognitive engagement, higher education learners, immersive VR experiences, the field of art education, and procedural knowledge learning.

Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are poised to revolutionize education by offering immersive and interactive learning experiences. This research comprehensively evaluates the educational applications of AR and VR, specifically emphasizing their impact on student motivation, learning outcomes, engagement, and overall learning experiences. The analysis explores how AR and VR can improve student learning, knowledge retention, and skill acquisition by systematically reviewing existing the literature from diverse educational domains, including K-12 education, higher education, STEM education, professional training, and lifelong learning. Additionally, the research investigates the pivotal role of AR and VR in fostering immersive and interactive learning environments, unveiling how these technologies promote active learning, collaboration, and critical thinking through simulations and interactive experiences. The evaluation considers the potential of AR and VR beyond traditional classroom settings in distance education and assesses the feasibility of virtual classrooms, web-based learning environments, and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). A significant aspect of the study involves understanding student attitudes toward AR and VR technologies and their influence on intrinsic motivation, interest, and enthusiasm for the learning material. Based on a thorough analysis of relevant literature, the research aims to provide practical recommendations for educators to effectively incorporate AR and VR into education practices. The recommendations prioritize a pedagogically sound design, educator training, and accessibility consideration to ensure equitable access for all learners. In summary, this extensive research reveals the significant impact of AR and VR on education by understanding the strengths, limitations, and challenges of making informed decisions on utilizing these technologies to create engaging, impactful learning experiences, fostering a generation of technologically proficient and knowledge-driven learners.

Emerging virtual reality and augmented reality (VR/AR) technologies in education have the potential to revolutionize the whole educational experience. Studies have shown that before introducing the technology to their pupils, educators should do a thorough assessment of the technology’s viability and possible acceptance in the classroom. However, not much is synthesized from the body of knowledge about the leadership and coupling of VR and AR in education, including its trends and direction of research in other domains. In this article, the bibliometric and content analysis has shown that interest in virtual reality and augmented reality has increased from 2018 to 2022 in the Web of Science database. The patterns formed from Vosviewer in the bibliometric analysis have also portrayed that Virtual reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are used in many fields, including education, medicine, arts, engineering, business, and marketing. Other results from data mining showed the authors with the most publications in the field, their affiliated universities, and the source of publications. In the wake of the Covid-19 epidemic, these findings may also help improve educational opportunities for all students and the quality of instruction they receive. As implications, Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) harness current technology to put digital content in the actual world, enabling consumers to have a more meaningful interaction with it on desktop or hand-held devices. This bibliometric research shows that animation, 3D graphics, and sound may replace more traditional ways of schooling in the future.

Students can be transported to virtual environments that facilitate experiential learning, from exploring historical landmarks to simulating complex scientific experiments. The result is enhanced student engagement, improved retention of knowledge, and the development of practical skills. AR, on the other hand, overlays digital information onto the real world, enriching traditional educational materials. Interactive textbooks and guided field trips using AR provide students with dynamic and context-rich learning experiences. Language learners benefit from instant translations and pronunciation guides, while complex data becomes tangible through AR visualizations. Both VR and AR contribute to the promotion of collaborative learning, enabling students and educators to interact in virtual environments. These technologies offer new opportunities for special needs education, as they can be customized to cater to the unique requirements of individual learners. The adoption of VR and AR in education comes with challenges, including cost considerations, the need for suitable technical infrastructure, content development complexities, and the necessity to address safety concerns. Since the 21st century, Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) technologies have been increasingly used in the field of language education to promote student motivation, engagement, and so on. This paper reviews the results of 180 reviews of empirical studies on the use of VR, AR, and MR to enhance K-12 teaching or learning from 2012 to 2022 and summarizes the trends. Based on Bloom’s classification theory of instructional goals, namely Cognitive Goals, Affective Goals, and Behavioral Goals, the outcomes of 53 papers are summarized and analyzed from these three dimensions to find the function of VR, AR, and MR in K-12 Language Education, which can improve literacy, creative thinking, communication, collaboration, confidence, participation, and enjoyment in the digital era. And it also promotes self-learning, enables multisensory learning, and reduces cognitive load. Despite the technological complexity and problems associated with the use of AR in education, VR, AR, and MR applications can successfully improve language learning. Compared with previous research approaches, this study first constructs a VR, AR, and MR-supported learning model based on their characteristics respectively and the relevance of these technologies.
