Abstract

Çalışmanın amacı, Maslow’un İhtiyaçlar Hiyerarşisi’nin iç mimari tasarıma nasıl uygulanabileceđini araştırmaktır. İnsan motivasyonu teorisinin tasarım sürecine başarılı bir şekilde entegre edilerek, bireylerin çeşitli ihtiyaçlarına cevap veren mekanlar oluşturulmasına dair kapsamlı bir anlayış sunarak, bu araştırma mevcut literatürde bir boşluđu doldurmaktadır. Araştırma, temel fizyolojik ihtiyaçlardan aidiyet, itibar ve kendini gerçekleştirme gibi daha ileri düzey ihtiyaçlara kadar çeşitli ihtiyaçların karşılanması gerektiđini öne süren Maslow’un İhtiyaçlar Hiyerarşisi’ne odaklanarak başlar. Araştırmacılar, hiyerarşinin her seviyesindeki temel kavramları ve iç mimari tasarım için olan etkilerini kapsamlı bir literatür analizi ile belirlerler. Araştırma metodolojisinde, nitel ve nicel yöntemler bir arada kullanılmaktadır. Nitel metodoloji kapsamında, iç mimarlar ve konuyla ilgili uzmanlarla derinlemesine görüşmeler gerçekleştirilerek, tasarım uygulamasında Maslow’un teorinin kullanımı hakkındaki görüşlerini anlamak amaçlanır. Nicel metodoloji ise anketler ve gözlemsel çalışmalar gibi yöntemleri kullanarak tasarım unsurlarının kullanıcı memnuniyeti ve mutluluđu üzerindeki etkisini deđerlendirmektedir. Çalışmanın sonuçları, iç mimari tasarım yapılırken kullanıcıların fizyolojik ihtiyaçlarının dikkate alınmasının önemini vurgulamaktadır. Yeterli aydınlatma, havalandırma ve ergonomik mobilyalar gibi unsurların iç mimari tasarımda yer alması gerekmektedir. Aynı zamanda, güvenlik ihtiyaçlarının karşılanmasının, bireylere güvenlik ve istikrar hissi sađlayan politikaların içermesiyle önemli olduđu vurgulanmaktadır. Araştırma ayrıca, sosyal etkileşimi teşvik eden ve topluluk hissi yaratan ortamların avantajlarını ortaya koymaktadır. Ortak kullanım alanlarının, esnek plan düzenlemelerinin ve sosyal etkileşimi teşvik eden özelliklerin içerilmesiyle bunlar başarılabilmektedir. Çalışma, insanların itibar ihtiyaçlarını karşılayan ve özgüveni ve tanınmayı destekleyen koşulların yaratılmasının önemini vurgulamaktadır. Bireysel olarak tasarlanmış mekanlar, kendini ifade etme fırsatları ve dođal unsurların varlıđı gibi faktörlerle bu ihtiyaçlar karşılanabilmektedir. Araştırma aynı zamanda iç mimari tasarımın nasıl kendini gerçekleştirmeyi teşvik edebileceđini ve insanların potansiyellerini gerçekleştirmelerine yardımcı olabileceđini araştırmaktadır. Benzersizlik, kişisel gelişim ve yaratıcılıđı teşvik eden ortamların geliştirilmesi bu açıdan önemli faktörlerdir.

Özet:
Çalışmanın amacı, Maslow’un İhtiyaçlar Hiyerarşisi’nin iç mimari tasarıma nasıl uygulanabileceđini
araştırmaktır. İnsan motivasyonu teorisinin tasarım sürecine başarılı bir şekilde entegre edilerek,
bireylerin çeşitli ihtiyaçlarına cevap veren mekanlar oluşturulmasına dair kapsamlı bir anlayış sunarak,
bu araştırma mevcut literatürde bir boşluđu doldurmaktadır.
Araştırma, temel fizyolojik ihtiyaçlardan aidiyet, itibar ve kendini gerçekleştirme gibi daha ileri
düzey ihtiyaçlara kadar çeşitli ihtiyaçların karşılanması gerektiđini öne süren Maslow’un İhtiyaçlar
Hiyerarşisi’ne odaklanarak başlar. Araştırmacılar, hiyerarşinin her seviyesindeki temel kavramları ve iç
mimari tasarım için olan etkilerini kapsamlı bir literatür analizi ile belirlerler.
Araştırma metodolojisinde, nitel ve nicel yöntemler bir arada kullanılmaktadır. Nitel metodoloji
kapsamında, mimarlar ve konuyla ilgili uzmanlarla derinlemesine görüşmeler gerçekleştirilerek,
tasarım uygulamasında Maslow’un teorinin kullanımı hakkındaki görüşlerini anlamak amaçlanır. Nicel
metodoloji ise anketler ve gözlemsel çalışmalar gibi yöntemleri kullanarak tasarım unsurlarının kullanıcı
memnuniyeti ve mutluluđu üzerindeki etkisini deđerlendirmektedir.
Çalışmanın sonuçları, mimari tasarım yapılırken kullanıcıların fizyolojik ihtiyaçlarının dikkate
alınmasının önemini vurgulamaktadır. Yeterli aydınlatma, havalandırma ve ergonomik mobilyalar
gibi unsurların mimari tasarımda yer alması gerekmektedir. Aynı zamanda, güvenlik ihtiyaçlarının
karşılanmasının, bireylere güvenlik ve istikrar hissi sađlayan politikaların içermesiyle önemli olduđu
vurgulanmaktadır.
Araştırma ayrıca, sosyal etkileşimi teşvik eden ve topluluk hissi yaratan ortamların avantajlarını

Maslow’s Hierarchy in Interior Architecture
Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to investigate how Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs may be applied to
interior architectural design. By oering a thorough grasp of how the theory of human motivation
may be successfully incorporated into the design process to build places that respond to the various
requirements of individuals, this research lls a gap in the current literature.
The research starts by looking at Maslow’s Hierarchy of wants, which contends that people have
a hierarchy of wants that must be met, ranging from fundamental physiological requirements to more
advanced needs like belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization. The researchers identify the essential
concepts at each level of the hierarchy and their implications for interior architectural design through a
thorough literature analysis.
In the research methodology, both qualitative and quantitative methods are combined. In-depth
interviews with interior architects and subject matter specialists are conducted as part of qualitative
methodologies to learn more about their opinions on the use of Maslow’s theory in design practice.
Surveys and observational studies are examples of quantitative methodologies used to evaluate how
design aspects aect occupant happiness and well-being.
The study’s conclusions emphasize the need of taking occupants’ physiological requirements
into account when designing interior architecture, such as by include sucient lighting, ventilation,
and ergonomic furniture. The study also underlines how important it is to satisfy safety and security

settings, chances for self-expression, and the presence of natural components.
The research also investigates how interior architectural design might promote self-actualization and
help people realize their full potential. The development of environments that encourage uniqueness,
personal development, and creativity are crucial factors in this respect.

A. Introduction:
The study seeks to investigate the applicability of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory in the context
of interior design. Maslow’s Hierarchy of wants is a well-known psychological theory that outlines
a hierarchy of human wants that begins with fundamental physiological demands and progresses to
higher-level needs like self-actualization.
The research is to look at how interior architecture might be constructed and used to meet the many
levels of human needs dened in Maslow’s Hierarchy. The research strives to improve the quality and
ecacy of interior spaces in satisfying the dierent requirements of persons by studying and applying
this notion.
The research will look into the role of interior architecture in meeting physiological demands such as
providing comfortable and practical places that address basic human needs for shelter, rest, and safety.
It also seeks to investigate how interior design features might aid in the fulllment of psychological
requirements, such as the creation of environments that foster a feeling of belonging, self-esteem, and
personal identity.
Furthermore, the research will look at how interior architecture might help people meet higher-
level requirements like creativity, personal growth, and self-actualization. It aims to comprehend how
design principles, spatial arrangements, and aesthetic considerations may all contribute to the creation
of places that inspire and assist individuals in their pursuit of their greatest potential. The research
intends to give insights and recommendations for designers, architects, and experts in the industry by
investigating and assessing the implementation of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in interior architecture.
It aims to emphasize the necessity of understanding individuals’ dierent and changing requirements
when designing interior spaces, as well as to give a theoretical framework for building surroundings that
encourage well-being, productivity, and personal satisfaction.
Overall, the study seeks to bridge the gap between psychological theories and interior architectural
practice. It seeks to further understanding of how interior spaces may be created and used to promote
persons’ well-being and growth, eventually producing settings conducive to human ourishing and
fullment of needs at various levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy.
Tewk and Al-Hariri (2022) conducted a research named “Systematic Path (Aesthetic and Functional)
In Advanced Contemporary Interior Design Techniques” with the goal of examining and analyzing the
systematic approach to merging aesthetic and functional aspects. The writers understand how crucial
it is to include both aesthetic features and useful utility into modern interior design in order to produce
rooms that not only look good but also eciently meet the demands of their occupants.
Tewk and Al-Hariri’s research oers a thorough examination of interior design strategies that may

B. Literature Review:
The integration of Maslow’s theory of human needs into the design of interior spaces is examined in
the literature study on the use of Maslow’s Hierarchy in interior architecture. The review looks at how
interior architecture may produce spaces that support occupant well-being, contentment, and optimal
performance by addressing dierent levels of human needs as suggested by Maslow’s Hierarchy.
The review starts o by going through Alkhaiat and Al-Yousif’s (2011) research on the aesthetic
eects of methods used to show interior architecture. The link between design methods and their impact
on the aesthetic features of interior spaces was perhaps rst explored in this research, which functioned

Additionally, Augustin, Frankel, and Coleman’s (2009) contribution to the literature emphasizes the
signicance of comprehending the human mind and behavior while creating places by integrating applied
psychology into interior architecture. The research by Caspari, Eriksson, and Nden (2011) emphasizes
the value of aesthetic environments and their impact on people’s experiences and general well-being in
a variety of aesthetic domains.
Chen and Haron’s (2023) investigation on how risk attitudes and multistakeholder value cognition
inuence sustainable interior landscape design choices oers insights into producing interior settings
that are ecologically sensitive. Engineer, Sternberg, and Naja (2018) explore interior design for senior
citizens with an emphasis on reducing age-related physical and cognitive deciencies and improving
lifespan.
Elnaggar (2022) examines how cognitive neuroscience is incorporated into interior architecture and

C. Methodology:

light and ventilation, ergonomic furniture, and comfortable break rooms to meet the physiological needs
of the employees. Security systems, emergency exits, and rst-aid stations can meet the safety needs.
Open spaces for collaboration, quiet areas for concentration, and a sense of community through shared
spaces can meet the love and belonging needs. Using quality materials and nishes in common areas,
providing artwork, and creating spaces for personal growth can meet the esteem needs. Finally, spaces
for brainstorming, creativity, and personal development can meet the self-actualization needs of the
employees.

The study oers insightful information on the eects of the various levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy
of Needs on the interior architecture industry. The study’s ndings highlighted how important it is to
consider people’s wants and motivations when creating interior spaces in order to improve occupants’
overall experience and well-being.
The study’s key nding is the signicance of considering physiological requirements in interior
architecture. Air quality, lighting, temperature management, and ergonomic furniture are all fundamental
human requirements that have a big impact on people’s comfort and health inside. Assuring that these
core needs are satised can enhance occupant contentment, productivity, and wellbeing in general.
The report also emphasizes how important it is for interior design to take security and safety concerns
into account. A sense of safety in a space, both physically and psychologically, helps its occupants feel
less stressed and anxious. Implementing elements like security systems, navigation signs, and re safety
precautions may improve a space’s overall sense of security and promote a peaceful environment.

With a people-oriented principle, contemporary architectural design regards the users’ spiritual and emotional satisfaction as fundamental needs. However, it was tough for designers to collect and quantify the users’ accurate perception of a design scheme in the past. This research aims to propose a method incorporating virtual reality (VR) and sensors, and wearable technology to pre-evaluate the impact of spatial schemes on user experience. Specifically, it collected users’ physiological signals to detect emotions and eye-tracking data to understand visual attention during their roaming in a VR environment. An empirical design scheme for the International School of Design’s outdoor spaces in Harbin Institute of Technology was adopted as a study case. For this purpose, multiple groups of contrast schemes were established in VR for users to experience. Participants’ physiological signals were collected and analyzed using the paired-samples T-test method. Subjective questionnaire data were also collected to assist in the verification of objective physiological data. The results showed that designers could evaluate the experience of the designs by comparing user reactions through analysis of physiological signals. Simultaneously, this evaluation method explores a feasible way for designers to promote architecture designs to be more humanized and scientific.

The concept of privacy, personal space, territoriality, and crowding are central to the study of environment and behavior relationships. Each has received increasing attention by social scientists and environmental designers in the past decades for somewhat d ifferent reasons. The study of crowding has been spurred on by a burgeoning world population, and some experts are predicting ecological doom as more and more people consume decreasing resources and as pollution of air, water and other natural resources increases. Some social and behavioral scientists believe because of the interpersonal stresses that occur fro m too much contact with too many people. It is likely that research on the areas of crowding, personal space, privacy and their relationship to the built environ ment will probably increase in the coming decades.
