Background The genus Nycteola Hübner has been mainly distributed in the Old World and usually feeds on Fagaceae and Salicaceae, but Myrtaceae and Juglandaceae have also been reported. In Korea, the number of this genus has been changed from four to three after 2007, but three or four species are listed confusingly up to now. New information The Japanese endemic species Nycteoladufayi Sugi, 1982 are firstly reported for the Continents with its brief biology. Additionally, Korean fauna of nycteolid species are reviewed.

This paper provides a comprehensive check list of Nolinae species recorded in Hong Kong, China based on the collections of the second author, Dr. Roger Kendrick and the Natural History Museum, London. The checklist comprises 30 species. Two of them are new to science and described here as new species (Spininola kendricki sp. n., and Hampsonola ceciliae sp. n.). Misidentification of the female paratype of Spininola nepali László, Ronkay & Ronkay, 2014 is revealed and the true female of S. nepali is illustrated with its genitalia described here for the first time. The hitherto unknown female of S. armata László, Ronkay & Witt, 2010 is also illustrated here for the first time. All species recorded from Hong Kong are illustrated together with their genitalia on 54 colour and 46 black and white diagnostic figures.

Present paper contains the descriptions of four new genera distinguished from the collecting genus Meganola s.l. (Hamp-sonola, Wittonola, Fragilonola and Maculonola gen. n.) and 11 new species (Meganola pseudobasalactifera, Hampsono-la diehli, H. subbasirufa, H. angustifasciata, H. stueningi, H. micra, Wittonola latifasciata, Nanola rothschildi, Fragilonola fragilis, F. parentela and Maculonola dolokmerangirensis spp. n.) from South East Asia. Based on genital morphology the concept of the genus Nanola is extended, involving several species treated earlier as Meganola. Meganola yakovlevi László, Ronkay & Ronkay, 2010 is synonymised with M. tetrodon (de Joannis, 1928), and M. pekarskyi László, Ronkay & Ronkay, 2014 is synonymised with Nanola liaoningensis (Han & Li, 2008), syn. n. 45 new combinations and 2 new stati are established. With 48 colour photos and 42 genitalia figures.

A nolid species, Roeselia triangulalis (Leech) is reported for the first time from Korea. Two males were collected from Jeju Island, South Korea. Roeselia triangulalis can be distinguished by the bipectinate male antennae, broad frons, long labial palpi, costally dark brownish spot and the rounded dark brownish postmedial line of forewing. In the male genitalia, the long saccus, the slender valve with distally expanded and spine-like harpe and long spinular cornutus of vesica are distinguishing characters. In the female genitalia, the simple sterigma, the long ductus bursae and the large ovate corpus bursae with a lip-shaped signum are distinguishing characters. Diagnosis and description of the species are given with the figures of the male genitalia.

To elucidate the evolutionary relationships of the major lineages within the moth family Nolidae, we analysed a molecular dataset comprising eight independent gene regions (6.4 kbp), cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) from the mitochondrial genome, and elongation factor-1α (EF-1α), ribosomal protein S5 (RpS5), carbamoylphosphate synthase domain protein (CAD), cytosolic malate dehydrogenase (MDH), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) and wingless genes from the nuclear genome, using parsimony and model-based evolutionary methods (maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference). Our analyses revealed a well-resolved phylogenetic hypothesis, again recovering the six previously recognized families within Noctuoidea (i.e. Oenosandridae, Notodontidae, Euteliidae, Erebidae, Nolidae and Noctuidae), and monophyly of the quadrifid Noctuoidea (i.e. Euteliidae, Erebidae, Nolidae and Noctuidae). The family Nolidae is diagnosed and characterized by two synapomorphies from morphology: construction of a ridged boat-shaped cocoon that bears a vertical exit slit at one end; and two other morphological character states: elongation of the forewing retinaculum into a bar-like or digitate condition and possession of a postpiracular counter-tympanal hood. We present a new phylogenetic hypothesis for Nolidae consisting of eight strongly supported subfamilies, two of which are erected here: Diphtherinae, Risobinae, Collomeninae subfam. nov., Beaninae subfam. nov., Eligminae, Westermanniinae, Nolinae and Chloephorinae. Where we are able, each monophyletic lineage is diagnosed by morphological autapomorphies and within each subfamily, monophyletic tribes and subtribes are circumscribed, most of which are also diagnosable by morphological apomorphies. We also describe two new taxa: Gelastocerini trib. nov. and Etannina subtrib. nov. The Neotropical subfamily Diphtherinae, here newly circumscribed, is considered to be the plesiomorphic sister lineage to the rest of Nolidae. Diphtherinae are characterized by loss of the proximal pair of metatibial spurs in males and by the presence of a frontal tubercle, which is presumably associated with a derived strategy of emergence from the cocoon.
