The diving medical detectives: when diving medicine books are completely wrong; Part VI

Authors:

Abstract

The diving medical detectives: when diving medicine books are completely wrong. Here in Part VI of this series we give only a short comment on the 5th. edition of Bennett & Elliot‘s Physiology and Medicine of Diving, concerning two errors on p. 440.

Here, in Part VI, we give only a short comment on
Table 10.1.1 on p. 440 of [63], Bennett‘s & Elliot‘s Bible“, i.e.:
the 5th. edition of “Physiology and Medicine of Diving”,
ed.: Brubakk, Neuman et al.:
The yellow display is ours: the original values published by Bob (copies, pls.
cf. slides # 4 & 5) are different! For 160 min N2it is 1.15;
for 200 min He it is 1.0.
4
N2 on p. 31:
5
Helium on p. 32:
6
Now, concerning the M0 values as
such, converted to msw:
but by using the
USN conversion factors for:
MSW (Meter of Sea Water) @ 4 ° C
(the pressure equivalent of
10 MSW = 1 Bar per definition);
or mfw (meter of fresh water) @ 15 ° C
(pls. cf., again & again, slide # 9),
the converted M0 values should look
like that:
7
As well there is a pressure conversion table
in the Appendix on p. 760.
This one yields for e.g.:
Line 3: 10.06 / 33 = 0.304848
Line 8: 35.22 / 115.5 = 0.304935
Line 16: 100.62 / 330 = 0.304909
Line 26: 201.24 / 660 = i.b.d.
It seems that neither of them were really used in the creation of 10.1.1
8
We do not want to insinuate that these deviations are
of any relevance to real-world,
practical diving: they are NOT!
Especially when considering the measurement-errors
of real-world diving equipment: pressure-/depth gauges
and dive-computers piezo-electronic systems
usually are to a precision of ca. 3 to 5 %, but only
if properly temperature-drift compensated.
But for serious scientific calculation of a dive table, the decompression
schedule for a SAT-dive or for the assessment of an internal calculation of a
dive computer: they ARE!

The mother of all diving manuals world-wide,
the United States Navy Diving Manual, with the very wise
remark, that 10 m is not 10 msw and: 10 feet is not 10 fsw!
