Abstract

The first record of Amphiareus constrictus (Stål, 1860) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) on the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) is reported. This is the first record of the species in the Canary archipelago. Furthermore, the first records of Fulvius borgesi Chérot, J. Ribes & Gorczyca, 2006 (Heteroptera: Miridae: Cylapinae) on the island of Tenerife and the first record of Plinachtus imitator (Reuter, 1891) (Heteroptera: Coreidae: Coreinae: Gonocerini) on the island of Lanzarote are reported. Additional information on the distribution of the three species is summarised.

Amphiareus constrictus (Stål, 1860) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) is a cosmopolitan species and is
distributed in the Americas, North and tropical Africa, Turkey, the Eastern Palaearctic, Australia and
Oceania. Concerning the Canary Islands (Spain), the most proximate records of the species are from
the island of Madeira (Portugal) and from Morocco (PÉRICART, 1996; AUKEMA & HERMES, 2009;
ÇERÇİ & KOÇAK, 2017). A. constrictus was introduced to the Netherlands (AUKEMA & HERMES, 2009).
Now, A. constrictus can be reported from the Canary Islands, too: On 26-01-2024, an adult
specimen (Fig. 1) was found in El Jardín, located near Los Realejos, at the northern coast of the island
of Tenerife. A photograph of the specimen was uploaded to the online database iNaturalist (see here).
Fulvius borgesi Chérot, J. Ribes & Gorczyca, 2006 (Heteroptera: Miridae: Cylapinae) was described
based on specimens found on the island of Terceira (Azores Islands, Portugal) (CHÉROT et al., 2006).
Later on, the species was reported for Gipuzkoa (northern Iberian Peninsula, Spain) (CHÉROT &
PAGOLA-CARTE, 2012) and for the island of La Palma (Canary Islands) (ROCA-CUSACHS et al., 2016,
2020).

Fulvius borgesi is present on the island of Tenerife, too: On 24-01-2024, two specimens were
observed in a private garden in El Jardín (Ben Jobson, pers. comm.). On 26-01-2024, an adult specimen
of F. borgesi (Fig. 2) was found at the same location. Photographs of two adult specimens of F. borgesi
were uploaded to the online database iNaturalist (see here and here).
So far, Plinachtus imitator (Reuter, 1891) (Heteroptera: Coreidae: Coreinae: Gonocerini) has been
reported for the Canary islands of El Hierro, La Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria (VÁZQUEZ, 1986;
HEISS & BÁEZ, 1990; AUKEMA et al., 2006, 2013; SUÁREZ et al., 2017; ROCA-CUSACHS et al., 2020).
Now, the island of Lanzarote can be added to the list of the distribution of P. imitator in the
Canary archipelago: On 01-01-2024, an adult specimen (Fig. 3) was found near La Hoya, in the
southwestern part of the island. Two photographs of the specimen were uploaded to the online database
iNaturalist (see here).

I would like to thank Ben Jobson and Bettina Köhne for allowing me to use their photos to illustrate this
note. Special thanks to Barış Çerçi for the identification of the specimen of A. constrictus reported
herein and to Barış Çerçi and Konstantin Grebennikov for confirming the identification of two specimens
of F. borgesi mentioned above.

In this study, the presence, distribution, and chorology of more than 3,000 individuals belonging 38 families and 173 species of Heteroptera from the Canary Islands has been revised. Specimens of the suborder Heteroptera were collected from the different islands and an updated checklist of the species occurring in the archipelago is presented. Three new records for the Canaries and 36 new records for at least one island are presented herein.

New data on the Heteroptera fauna of La Palma, Canary Islands (Insecta: Hemiptera). In: KMENT P., MALENOVSKÝ I. & KOLIBÁÈ J. (eds.): Studies in Hemiptera in honour of Pavel Lauterer and Jaroslav L. Stehlík. Acta Musei Moraviae, Scientiae biologicae (Brno) 98(2): 459–493. – Heteroptera collected on La Palma in the Canary Islands during the period 2001–2012 are listed. Data for 153 species are given, including 28 species recorded for the first time from La Palma. Six of these species are also new for the Canary Islands: Cantacader quadricornis (Lepeletier et Serville, 1828) (Tingidae), Bryocoris pteridis (Fallén, 1807), Macrolophus pygmaeus (Rambur, 1839), Thiomiris sulphureus (Reuter, 1879) (all Miridae), Amphiareus obscuriceps (Poppius, 1909) (Anthocoridae) and Ischnodemus quadratus Fieber, 1837 (Lygaeidae). Furthermore, the occurrence of eight species on La Palma is confirmed. With this contribution the number of species known from the Canary Islands and La Palma increases to 400 and 216 respectively. The number of Canarian endemic species on La Palma is 48 (22.2 %). Lindbergopsallus lauri Rieger, 2012 and L. lunariae Rieger, Strauß et Günther, 2011 (Miridae), Collartida tanausu J. Ribes, Oromi et E. Ribes, 1998 (Reduviidae) and Nysius gloriae Baena et Garcia, 1999 (Lygaeidae) are only known from La Palma.
