Abstract: This study is aimed at finding the causes of difficulties faced by third-year English majors, thereby proposing solutions to help the students overcome difficulties and improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning idioms and proverbs at the Faculty of English, Hanoi Open University. The study data were collected from 276 third-year English majors through an online questionnaire. The research uses quantitative methods combined with statistical and analytical techniques. The results show that students are aware of the importance of learning and using idioms and proverbs in the learning process. However, research also shows that students' difficulties in learning idioms and proverbs are mainly due to lack of cultural knowledge, lack of vocabulary, and lack of appropriate learning methods. Some solutions have been researched and proposed such as: diversifying classroom activities, designing vivid lesson content and providing supplementary exercises.
