Restoration plan for the black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) in France. Gibier Faune Sauvage - Game and Wildlife, 1994, Vol. 11 (Hors série Tome 1): 241-263.
The restoration plan for the black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) in France sets forth the actions that should be undertaken for the conservation of populations and
habitats. In the first part we present a monitoring programme for black grouse and their habitats in the Alps, as proposed by a group, the « Observatoire des galliformes de montagne», which coordinates activities of all organizations and associations interested in the study and conservation of mountain Galliforms, and
black grouse in particular. For each main cause of rarefaction, we set out the general population and habitat management practices that should be implemented successively, as well as the objectives of studies and experiments that are needed to formulate certain practical recommendations. Finally, we mention the few sites in the French Alps where a restoration plan is already applied. In the long term, however, on the basis of grouse population trends, ecological conditions and social and economic constraints, it is important to identify all sites where the application of measures for protection and management would be beneficial to black grouse. The programme of the «Observatoire des galliformes de montagne» could be a basic tool to reach the above-mentioned objectives during the present decade.
