TV Notifications to Promote Trustworthy News and Local School Newspapers

Abstract

The growth of social media and user-targeted information reinforces the need to check sources to prevent the dissemination of unreliable content. In this context, an innovative solution is presented based on the established proliferation of push notifications and the potential identified in the TV ecosystem, since it connects multiple devices and platforms. The proposed approach aims to send news notifications with a high level of credibility through television as well as the latest news from local school newspapers. This strategy expects to engage audiences of different generations to promote family discussion and critical thinking about current topics. Furthermore, the dissemination of local events and releases of school newspapers intends to create a sense of community beyond the school while promoting social and local cohesion. This solution combines two on-going R&D projects that bring together the academia and well-established partners of the Portuguese industry, namely a news media company and an Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) provider. After the good results from a preliminary field trial to assess the receptiveness to news notifications on the TV, a second evaluation will be carried out with school students (who will create the news) and their families (who will receive the notifications at home). Finally, this solution aims to contribute with more knowledge for preventing fake news dissemination, and also to demonstrate the potential of a personalized notifications mechanism for delivering trustworthy information on the TV ecosystem.

Fake news (FN) on social media (SM) rose to prominence in 2016 during the United States of America presidential election, leading people to question science, true news (TN), and societal norms. FN is increasingly affecting societal values, changing opinions on critical issues and topics as well as redefining facts, truths, and beliefs. To understand the degree to which FN has changed society and the meaning of FN, this study proposes a novel conceptual framework derived from the literature on FN, SM, and societal acceptance theory. The conceptual framework is developed into a meta-framework that analyzes survey data from 356 respondents. This study explored fuzzy set-theoretic comparative analysis; the outcomes of this research suggest that societies are split on differentiating TN from FN. The results also show splits in societal values. Overall, this study provides a new perspective on how FN on SM is disintegrating societies and replacing TN with FN.

Push notifications provide news outlets with direct access to audiences amid concerns around information overload, disinformation, and heightened competition for reader attention. Such news distribution is relevant because it (a) bypasses social media and news aggregators, reaching readers directly; (b) alters the agency and control of temporal news personalisation; and (c) reinforces mobile as the locus of contact between news organisations and audiences. However, push notifications are a relatively under-researched topic. We explore news organisations’ use of alerts, considering whether they attempt to integrate with existing mobile-user behaviour patterns or seek to be a disruptive element, garnering attention when audiences are not typically using devices. Through quantitative content analysis, this study examines the temporality of push notifications (n ¼ 7092) from nine Northwestern European countries, comprising 34 news outlets. These data allow for comparisons at two levels: publisher type and national context. The study shows how the temporal patterns of push notifications’ dissemination align with existing news consumption behaviours; concepts of content-snacking and audiences’ rhythms and rituals are a useful lens through which these immediate, concise texts can be considered. Our findings show that news organisations use the mobile channel for attracting and maintaining users’ attention, with varying interpretations of temporal customizability.

With the growing number of mobile devices receiving daily notifications, it is necessary to manage the variety of information produced. New smart devices are developed every day with the ability to generate, send, and display messages about their status, data, and information about other devices. Consequently, the number of notifications received by a user is increasing and their tolerance may decrease in a short time. With this, it is necessary to develop a management system and notification controls. In this context, this work proposes a notification and alert management system called PRISER. Its focus is on user profiles and environments, applying data privacy criteria.

Young people's media consumption has changed with the integration of information and communication technologies. The most recurrent media for consulting the information is no longer the traditional newspapers but the online platforms, such as social networking services and websites. In this way, it is crucial to be wary about the content and sources shared on digital networks (e.g., social media), especially for younger audiences. To combat the problem of the consumption of fake news in younger audiences, the creation of journalistic content can guide young people to improve their critical thinking on credible sources consultation through digital newspaper creation.
