A. INTRODUCTION
Language plays an important role in human life. People use language to interact and
communicate with others in society. Language is produced by a system of voice in the human
body and it has an important function of making communication. In communication, there
are many ways to convey the language in oral and written. Written language is a language
that is recorded in writing to convey information. Whereas in human daily interaction, oral
language is easily used in each case because it expresses people’s idea to the listener. Some
people have their language that is used in a daily activity which different from others. Every
people also have different characteristic from their culture which determined the variety of
language that they use. It means that language has many variations in society. One of the
famous varieties of language used by many people is slang.
Slang is generally considered an informal style of speech used by society in a specific
community. Swan (1995) states that slang is a very informal kind of vocabulary, used mostly
in a speech by people who know each other. Slang is not used in formal conversation. It is
usually used in an informal situation when there is no rule to say something. Slang is
commonly used nowadays. Almost a lot of people use slang in daily conversation. That is
why the writer is interested in choosing slang as a topic in this study. Besides, slang is
important because people can know someone’s dialog in both formal and informal
communication.
In this research, the writer is interested in analyzing slang words in the movie entitled
It”. It is an American supernatural horror movie based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel of the
same name, directed by Andy Muschietti and written by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga and
Gary Dauberman. The writer chooses It movie for this research because this movie depicts
the adventures of a group of teenagers, where it makes slang easy to find since teenagers
generally use slang. Besides, the main characters who are teenagers often use slang in their
conversations. On the other hand, this movie has won many awards.
There are two objectives of this research. The first is to find out the kinds of slang
words used in It movie and the second is to know the function of slang words used in It
movie.
B. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
1. Definition of Slang
Slang is informal language used by people in a particular social group for internal
communication. According to Kipfer and Chapman (2007) “slang is a language that has little
to do with the main aim of language, the connection of sounds with ideas in order to
communicate ideas-rather, it is an attitude, a feeling, a verbal action” (p.9). Claire (1998)
defines that slang is a term used by people in social situations where they feel comfortable
with their friend. Slang can make a conversation more intimate. Fromkin and Rodman (2003)
states that slang is a kind of casual language that occurs due to the rapid growth of new words
that are used as a creative expression by people to make the words more efficient.
From the definition above, the writer concludes that slang is an informal language used
by particular groups of people related to informal communication. Slang is usually used to
communicate with a group to express people's ideas, verbal actions, feelings, and creativity.
In addition, people use slang for easiness, enjoyment and simpler to be uttered.

selecting, focusing, simplifying, abstracting, and transforming the data that appear in
written-up field notes or transcriptions. Second, data display, an organized, compressed,

Slang is a linguistic phenomenon that is closely related to the creativity of young people in language, the more difficult it is created, the more secret the communication used. Slang often appears in a large group to small groups, no exception in a group of young people in Islamic educational institutions that use Arabic as the language of instruction in everyday life, of course this is a major influence on the emergence of slang among students. This study aims to describe the process of Arabic slang word formation found in speakers in modern Islamic boarding schools and explore the function of Arabic slang in the pesantren environment. This research uses a qualitative approach with data collection methods through interviews and direct observations of santri who are designated as informants. The informants used in this study have specific requirements such as: 1) Is a student at the Modern Islamic Boarding School, 2) The source of research data is daily speech used by students in modern Islamic boarding schools, while the specific data is in the form of words. Data analysis is done through three stages, namely: (1) data reduction, (2) data classification and presentation, and (3) conclusion drawing. The results of the analysis are presented using informal and formal methods. The results show that Arabic slang words used by modern boarding school students include ordinary slang, acronyms, and abbreviations, with the formation process in the form of phoneme deletion, syllable deletion, phoneme addition, reversal, and deletion. These slang words function to facilitate pronunciation, express curses, express emotions such as anger, confusion, and surprise. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the formation process of Arabic slang in modern Islamic boarding schools, contributing to the understanding of linguistic creativity among youth in educational settings. The study is limited to a specific demographic (students aged 13-17 in modern Islamic boarding schools), which may not represent the broader Arabic-speaking youth population. For future researchers, it is hoped that they can find new slangs in other educational institutions, so that there are many variations of linguistic phenomena that can be studied and can be learned by the general public, so as to reduce misunderstandings of communication between teenagers in modern boarding schools and the community.

Many words and expressions are viewed as 'taboo', such as those used to describe sex, our bodies and their functions, and those used to insult other people. This 2006 book provides a fascinating insight into taboo language and its role in everyday life. It looks at the ways we use language to be polite or impolite, politically correct or offensive, depending on whether we are 'sweet-talking', 'straight-talking' or being deliberately rude. Using a range of colourful examples, it shows how we use language playfully and figuratively in order to swear, to insult, and also to be politically correct, and what our motivations are for doing so. It goes on to examine the differences between institutionalized censorship and the ways individuals censor their own language. Lively and revealing, Forbidden Words will fascinate anyone who is interested in how and why we use and avoid taboos in daily conversation. © Keith Allan and Kate Burridge 2006 and Cambridge University Press, 2010.
