Research Problem: Formulation, Relevance and Justification

Abstract

Research problem is a primary research question to be researched and answered. A researcher must know what a research problem is? 'A research problem in general, refers to some difficulty which a researcher experiences in the context of either a theoretical or practical situation' and aims to end up with a solution for the same. A research problem is a specific issue, difficulty, contradiction, or gap in knowledge that you will aim to address in your research. You might look for practical problems aimed at contributing to change, or theoretical problems aimed at expanding knowledge. Bear in mind that some research will do both of these things, but usually the research problem focuses on one or the other. The type of research problem you choose depends on your broad topic of interest and the type of research you want to do (McComes, 2019). It is one of the first statements made in any research paper and, as well as defining the research area, should include a quick synopsis of how the hypothesis was arrived at. Look at any scientific paper, and you will see the research problem, written almost like a statement of intent. Defining a research problem is crucial in defining the quality of the answers and determines the exact research method used. A quantitative experimental design uses deductive reasoning to arrive at a testable hypothesis (Shuttleworth). SELECTION OF A RESEARCH PROBLEM Two factors play important role in the selection of a research problem. They are external and personal. External factor involves how the topic is important for the field, availability of data, use of data collection methods and the probable response from the subjects, administration or related groups where the research is to be carried. Personal factor refers to theresearcher's own zeal, interest, availability of time and cost. One has to carefully go through the prevalent issues and problems faced by the society. The nature of the problem should be relevant to the concerned discipline, though inter-disciplinary approach would cater to the intensity of the research. The research problem to be selected should be in the form of an unsolved question or challenge faced by the society or a group. Some precautions while selecting a problem are: (a) Brainstorming of the ideas and concepts. (b) Discuss with the research guide/supervisor, colleagues, peer group, etc. (c) Review of relevant literature. (d) Relating the literature with your research problem. (e) Citing the sources that can support the claims of the research topic.
