In the last chapter, I presented evidence linking the current account deficit to the US housing boom, which raises the question of what drove the increase in the current account deficit. In this chapter, I explore the cause of the growth of the current account deficit and the accompanying capital flow bonanza during the US housing boom. There are several candidate explanations: perhaps the United ... [Show full abstract] States needed the offshore savings to augment its deficient domestic savings. Perhaps foreign investors presumed the United States to be a safer place to invest their savings than elsewhere. Perhaps they supposed the United States to have unexploited prospects for earning high returns. Or perhaps something else motivated offshore investors to pile into US securities. This is a crucial matter, since it is necessary to identify the forces that generated the US current account deficit in order to understand the housing boom. To set the stage for consideration of this question, I review some of the key macroeconomic conditions that prevailed during the housing boom.

Besides, the most important findings of the study that despite suffering the Sulaimani industrial Zone of lack infrastructure, financial and administrative obstacles for investors (domestic and foreign), but the role of industrial zone of Sulaimani in the exploitation of local resources and job creation relatively high, which is (61%) and (80%), respectively. Thus, it is necessary Kurdistan government (The concerned authorities in the province of Sulaimani) Work on the appropriate economic and trade policies to encourage domestic and foreign investors to set up their projects and invest capitals within the industrial zone of Sulaimani, which is by increasing the incentives and tax breaks, and work to establish a private bank to finance projects within the industrial zone.

The initial effect of U.S. tax reform on foreign acquisitions

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017 marked a significant change in U.S. domestic and international tax policy, altering incentives for U.S. firms to own foreign assets. We examine the initial response of U.S. firms’ foreign acquisition patterns to the TCJA’s key reform provisions. We find a significant overall decrease in the probability that a foreign target is acquired by a U.S. firm after ... [Show full abstract] the reform, suggesting that the net effect of the TCJA was to reduce acquisitions abroad. Cross-sectional variation across target and acquirer characteristics points to the elimination of the repatriation tax and the TCJA’s global intangible low-taxed income (GILTI) regime as critically influencing cross-border acquisitions by U.S. firms. Specifically, U.S. acquirers with little foreign presence prior to the TCJA are more likely to acquire a foreign target, while U.S. acquirers are less likely to acquire profitable targets in low-tax countries. Results from our empirical analyses are consistent with the TCJA prompting fewer but more value-enhancing, less tax-motivated foreign acquisitions by U.S. firms.

The provision of imputation tax credits can in principle lower the returns that investors require on equity. Whether in practice imputation credits lower the returns that investors require depends in large part on the impact of foreign investors on equity prices. Does the Same FDI Fit All? How Competition and Affiliates Characteristics Affect Parents’ Productivi...

This paper investigates the heterogeneity within the group of foreign direct investors by analyzing the relation between parents’ productivity, the degree of domestic competition and the characteristics of their affiliates. Our results show that there is no unique recipe. Foreign direct investors may benefit differently depending on the economic environment in which they operate. Building an ... [Show full abstract] original 10-year panel dataset of Italian investors, we find that larger manufacturing parents tend to have more, larger and more productive affiliates in a higher number of destinations as well as being more productive in terms of total factor productivity. Having affiliates in high income countries or in both high and low income countries is associated with a productivity premium vis-à-vis investors in low income countries. Parent sector characteristics such as technology and degree of competition are also associated with productivity in a non-monotonic way. Low income country investors are found to be relatively more productive when operating in more competitive low technology sectors, while the opposite holds true for high income country investors, which become more productive when operating in less competitive high technology sectors.

Book-Tax Conformity: Implications for Multinational Firms

[Show full abstract] be forced to trade-off reporting high earnings numbers to shareholders and reporting low earnings to the taxing authority, resulting in improved financial reporting and less tax avoidance. Reduced compliance costs and easier auditing have also been cited as potential benefits of book-tax conformity. However, before one can evaluate the costs and benefits of book-tax conformity it is necessary to understand international implications of conformity, particularly regarding the foreign operations of U.S. multinationals. We describe several possible approaches to implementing book-tax conformity for firms that have both domestic and foreign operations. We discuss issues likely to arise with each approach and conjecture at the behavioral responses to each. Using firm-level financial data from Compustat, we simulate the effects of book-tax conformity on publicly traded U.S. firms. Specifically, we simulate the effects of book-tax conformity on the level and variability book earnings and tax payments/collections.
