Assessing the Impact of Project-Based Learning on Students' Environmental Awareness and
Sustainable Behaviour in Education for Sustainable Development.
Reason for your interest in this
How does it link to your previous PGCAP activities, or your current or future roles and
responsibilities within your department?
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) aims to empower learners to contribute to
building a sustainable future by integrating the principles and values of sustainable
development into educational systems. Project-based learning is a student-centered
approach that promotes active engagement, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. This
research topic explores the potential of project-based learning in fostering students'
environmental awareness and encouraging sustainable behaviour. This topic is linked to some
previous iCAP topics we discussed independent learning that is student-centered and
activities that promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills of students.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) plays a crucial role in equipping students with
the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to address environmental challenges and foster
sustainable behaviour. This literature-based research abstract examines the impact of
project-based learning on students' environmental awareness and sustainable behaviour
within the context of education for sustainable development. By synthesizing existing
literature, the abstract aims to identify key findings, trends, and research gaps in this area.
The research reveals that project-based learning is a promising pedagogical approach that
promotes active engagement, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among students. It
provides opportunities for students to explore real-world sustainability issues, collaborate
with peers, and apply knowledge to practical situations. Project-based learning facilitates the
development of environmental awareness by encouraging students to investigate
environmental problems, analyze their causes and effects, and propose sustainable solutions.
Furthermore, project-based learning has been found to positively influence students'
sustainable behaviour. Through hands-on experiences and active involvement, students
develop a sense of responsibility and ownership toward sustainable practices. They
demonstrate an increased willingness to engage in behaviours such as waste reduction,
energy conservation, and responsible consumption.
However, the research highlights the need for further investigation and rigorous assessment
of the impact of project-based learning on students' environmental awareness and
sustainable behaviour. There is a lack of standardized measurement tools and long-term
studies to comprehensively evaluate the sustained effects of project-based learning.
In conclusion, this literature-based research abstract underscores the potential of project-
based learning in fostering students' environmental awareness and sustainable behaviour. It
emphasizes the importance of continued research and evaluation to enhance the
effectiveness of project-based learning approaches and contribute to the field of education
for sustainable development. Future studies should focus on developing robust assessment
methods and exploring innovative ways to integrate project-based learning into curricula for
long-term impact.
