Background
•Hospitalisation is a challenge for people with cognitive impairment [1]
•Care processes not adapted to the individual needs lead to complications
and adverse events [1]
•Nurses in expanded roles can contribute to improve quality of care and
foster person-centred care for people with cognitive impairment [2]
Methods
Aim
To describe expanded roles and tasks of nurses caring for people with
cognitive impairment and their relatives in acute hospitals

Discussion
•The studies present different approaches to integrate expanded
practice nurses into specialised hospital care
•The results informed the curriculum of a 200-hour training that
supported the development of an expanded nursing role to
promote person-centred care for people with cognitive
impairment in Germany

Intervention
characteristics
•Of 44 studies identified, 29 include people with delirium and 15
include people with cognitive impairment
•We included 15 studies (Fig 1) reporting on 16 interventions (Tab. 1)
•Studies were randomised controlled trials (n=2), quasi-
experimental studies (n=10) and cross-sectional studies (n=3)
