We present and explore a real case in case in authorship attribution (A.A.) by combining the traditional philological approach with novel mathematical techniques. The problem involves the extensive productions of Basil of Caesarea and his brother Gregory of Nyssa, two influential 4th century Christian theologians, and the attribution of specific and discussed works in their corpora. Our novel method is based on two similarity (pseudo) distances, based, respectively, on the statistics of n-grams and on zip-like algorithms and on a new ranking/voting system that allows to infer the attribution from the values of distances between the unknown texts and the texts of the training corpus. The main results are on one hand the attribution of the letter with 97% of precision to one of the two authors and on the other the strong agreement of the numerical explorations with both the philological analysis and the so far known results for all the works in the two corpora.

[Show full abstract] while on vemurafenib frequently correlates with ERK1/2 pathway reactivation but previous studies have been unable to precisely monitor the temporal changes in ERK1/2 activity. Here, we establish a cell-based ERK1/2 reporter system that provides quantitative analysis of RAF inhibitor action in mutant BRAF melanoma cells in vitro and in vivo. This system was utilized to show that the RAF inhibitor, PLX4720, effectively targets the ERK1/2 pathway in vivo and that ERK1/2 reactivation is associated with tumor re-growth. Levels of ERK1/2 reactivation varied substantially between tumors and were associated with several different molecular changes. These data present a new system from monitoring in vivo efficacy of ERK1/2 pathway inhibitors and identifying mechanisms of in vivo acquired resistance. Citation Format: Kevin J. Basile, Ethan V. The influence of blanching, drying, and storage on the volatile fraction of the basil leaves

The basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum maximum L) were blanched in boiling water for 20s, dried by microwave, freeze-drying or hot air; then stored at r.t. for 3,6, and 9 months. [Show full abstract] analysis of the aroma profiles and of eugenol and linalool) pointed out that almost all the compounds of the "green" note disappeared both in the blanched leaves and in the unblanched leaves dried with the three techniques.The other compounds, as well as some characteristic components of basil aroma (eucalyptol, linalool, and eugenol) presented values comparable with those of control, except for the sample dried by microwave that presented a decrease of eugenol and linalool. The samples dried with any of the technique after blanching, had the percentage compositions lower than those of the unblanched dried samples. During storage, all the remaining volatile compounds further decreased and this trend was more accentuated in basil leaves blanched before drying. The freeze-drying of the unblanched sample preserved the aromatic profiles during storage better than the other two techniques.
