Ecotourism Research Progress: A Bibliometric Analysis (Period 2002–2022) Using VOSviewer Software

Authors:

Abstract

This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of ecotourism literature in the period from 2002 to 2022 using VOSviewer software. 1,693 articles indexed by Scopus were analyzed. The results reveal that ecotourism is a developing research field that attracts scholars from many countries. Most of the articles were published in the United States, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, and the United Kingdom. The study identified four main thematic areas: (a) the involvement of local communities and stakeholders in ecotourism management and development in protected areas; (b) ecotourists’ perceptions, attitudes and behaviours; (c) the use of technology and environmental management to support ecotourism development planning and management; and (d) biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in ecotourism. This study suggests that decision-making based on data, stakeholder participation and climate adaptation in the planning and management of ecotourism is attracting the attention of researchers worldwide.

The first stage of bibliometric analysis is to select
a suitable database which has been determined by its
usefulness for the research. The Scopus database was

bibliometric analysis useful in tourism research for
accumulating information, evaluating research per-
formance and providing a profound insight based on
evidence by analyzing previous research publications

established tourism journals, such as Annals of Tourism
Research and Journal of Travel Research, also appear on
the list. The number of articles and citations for those
journals is relatively stable.
The journal Sustainability ranks third in terms of

Overall, developed countries have an advantage in
terms of the number of publications. The United States
has a long-standing academic community that focuses
heavily on environmental and sustainability issues. In
addition, there are many specialized research centers
and programs that focus on ecotourism and related
topics. Therefore, it is not surprising that the United
States tops the list. Similarly, the United Kingdom and

Cluster 4. Biodiversity conservation and sustainable
development in ecotourism
The focus of ecotourism research is often on the
creation of sustainable tourism. Terms like ‘sustainable
development’, ‘sustainability’ and ‘sustainable tourism’
demonstrate an interest in developing tourism in
a sustainable manner. Ecotourism destinations must
be developed in a way that balances the economic,
social and environmental needs of the local community.
This involves working closely with them to ensure that
tourism benefits are shared fairly, and that the impacts
of tourism on the environment and local culture are
minimized.
The prominence of phrases like ‘conservation’,
conservation management’ and ‘natural resource’ in
the keywords suggests that research in this cluster is

Ecotourism is a sustainable tourism form that emphasizes the harmonious relationship between human and nature, with local communities playing a key role in providing services and protecting natural resources. Using semi-structured interviews conducted at various ecotourism sites in the Binh-Tri-Thien region (Central Vietnam), this study has illuminated the role of local communities in fostering ecotourism development. Communities actively contribute by offering distinctive services and products while preserving cultural values, safeguarding the environment, and fostering sustainable relationships with visitors. The findings reveal that local communities play key roles as tour guides, providers of accommodation services, and producers of handicrafts, generating income and promoting cultural exchange. However, barriers such as skill deficiencies and gender inequalities continue to limit the participation of certain groups, particularly women. While cultural and environmental preservation is given considerable attention, the risk of traditional cultural erosion remains significant, especially among ethnic minority communities. Based on these insights, the study recommends expanding the scope of research and integrating qualitative and quantitative methods to enhance the reliability of findings.
... Prior to the pandemic, the Travel and Tourism sector accounted for 10.6% of total employment and 10.4% of global GDP [16,17]. In addition to the positive impacts, the rise of mass tourism has led to various negative socio-economic and environmental effects [10]. These effects have spurred the development of sustainable tourism models [18]. ...

This study explores the potential of Khat waste as a biofuel through a detailed analysis of its physical properties and pyrolytic behavior, employing both laboratory and simulation techniques. Biomass, including Khat waste, is a valuable renewable energy source with potential applications in reducing waste and CO2 emissions, especially in rural areas of developing countries like Ethiopia. The physical properties of the Khat waste were thoroughly examined, including moisture content, ash, volatile matter (VM), fixed carbon (FC), and elemental composition. The apparent density of the pyrolyzed khat waste was found to be 0.9688 g/cm³. The TGA results showed a moisture loss of 6.7 %, volatile matter of 4.7 %, fixed carbon of 6.78 %, and ash content of 5.55 %. Notably, Khat waste exhibited unique thermal behavior with a downward shift in TG curves above 220 °C. DTGA identified three decomposition peaks: moisture evaporation at 100 °C, hemicellulose breakdown at 210 °C, and cellulose degradation at higher temperatures. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) provided insights into the functional groups present in Khat waste, including alkene functional groups and O-H bonds, which are crucial for biofuel properties. Simulation using Aspen Plus software modeled the pyrolysis process, highlighting how varying heating rates affect volatile matter and fixed carbon content. Increasing heating rates decreased volatile matter and moisture but increased fixed carbon content. These findings offer valuable insights for optimizing Khat waste as a biofuel, emphasizing the need for tailored pyrolysis conditions to enhance biofuel production efficiency.

After arthritis and other hip ailments, hip implants reduce discomfort and restore mobility. Each hip implant has benefits and downsides. Hip implant systems vary in size, shape, material, and dimensions. Hip implants have varying results for different people. Medical design, surgeon skill, installation method, and patient factors including age, gender, weight, activity level, and health may impact hip implant performance and longevity. Hip replacement is usually effective; however, implants may need to be replaced. This research compresses the acetabular cup head and fixes the stem-femoral to evaluate hip implant gait. Most failures occur in the acetabular cup head-femoral head contact. Because stem femoral stresses that create bending moments are seen and analyzed, the hip joint head fails. SOLID EDGE Software (version 2022) will geometrically model the hip joint using realistic standard dimensions, and ANSYS workbench (version 2019 R3) will do FEA to enhance implant design for stress reduction and prevent implant revision in highly active patients.

Recently, ecotourism has been identified as an adaptation strategy for mitigating climate change impacts, as it can optimize carbon sequestration, biodiversity recovery, and livelihood benefits and generate new opportunities for the sustenance of the economy, environment, and society of the area endowed with natural resources and cultural values. With the growing responsibility at the global level, ecotourism resource management (ERM) becomes inevitable for its sustainable requirements. The integration of ecological and socio-economic factors is vital for ERM, as has been demonstrated by developing an Ecotourism Sustainability Maximization Model for an area under study, that is the Yuksam-Dzongri corridor (also known as Kangchendzonga Base Camp Trek), in the Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve (KBR), Sikkim, India. This model is based on the earlier developed ecotourism sustainability assessment (ESA) framework by the authors, which is based on the hierarchical relationship among ecotourism principles, criteria, indicators, and verifiers. Employing such relationships, this paper attempts to maximize ecotourism sustainability (ES) as a function of its sustainability principles, criteria, indicators, and verifiers, subject to the constraints identified through the safe minimum standard (SMS) approach by employing linear programming. Using 58 indicators as decision variables and 114 constraints, the model resulted in a maximum level of achievable ES with a score of 84.6%, allowing the resultant optimum values of the indicators to be maintained at the operational level. A central tenet of the model is the collective responsibility and adoption of a holistic approach involving the government, tourists, tourism enterprises, and local people.

Ecotourism in protected areas facilitates responsible travel to natural places that conserve the environment, deliver economic benefits to local communities, and offer interpretation and education to visitors. Proper planning and sufficient monitoring of ecotourism sustainability indicators is needed to manage visitor activities in protected areas. Therefore, identifying the major impacts and mitigating them in the early stages of ecotourism development could contribute significantly to the achievement of sustainable development. There is a current gap between the situation in the field and academic contributions to this problem in protected areas of Iran. In the present study, we evaluated ecotourism sustainability levels in four different types of protected areas in Iran, including Lar National Park, Jajrud Protected Area with Sustainable Use of Natural Resource Areas, Tangeh Vashi National Natural Monument, and Kavdeh Wildlife Refuge. We developed a comprehensive list of ecotourism sustainability indicators, including 38 indicators in the environmental–physical dimension, 42 indicators in the demographic–social dimension, and 30 indicators in the economic–institutional dimension. Harnessing local community expertise, we adopted a Delphi approach to determine sustainability levels and factors impacting sustainability. Ecotourism in Lar National Park was most sustainable because of the high levels of restrictions protecting the area and the difficulty in access. Conversely, ecotourism sustainability was lowest at Tangeh Vashi National Natural Monument, which allowed for an uncontrolled influx of visitors. We discuss further factors that impact sustainability, such as population growth, expanding urbanization, an increase in physical and economic activities, and extended annual periods of ecotourism activities. Although the presented ecotourism sustainability indicators are specific to Iran, this study can also be seen to provide a template to plan for sustainable ecotourism in other countries. Altogether, our results suggest conducting a type-by-type analysis of the particular circumstances of various protected areas.

Optimizing reservoirs for ecotourism development is one way to increase local or national economics without impairing environmental conditions, alongside as an adapting or mitigating process to climate change, which is part of sustainable development goals, especially in the Aek Natonang’reservoir, where there is also a botanic garden and a conservation zone function. Hence, this research tried to explore, investigate, and analyze the role of reservoirs in ecotourism and their coping with climate change impacts, as well as their hopefully positive welfare impact on the welfare of the local people. The direct observation and in-depth individual interviews with some of the respondents collected data in the field, alongside assessment of environmental aspects or conditions. The result of this research has shown that the reservoir of Aek Natonang areas as a water conservation paradigm that would support the local activities in their daily lives as well as act as an adapting and mitigating process to climate change impacts. Hence, ecotourism development is one way to cope with it, and it is part of the challenges and opportunities in Aek Natonang areas management to ecotourism development in the framework of local or national economic growth based on the reservoir of potential.

The development of community-based ecotourism (CBE) has the potential to preserve biodiversity and protect the environment, as well as play an important role in the socio-cultural, economic and politically sustainable development of the community. This paper assesses the implementation of CBE development and compares the sustainability of ecotourism development between the Zhabagly community and the Abaiyl community. The data is obtained mainly through the household questionnaire survey, field observations, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. 222 representative families were surveyed with 5-point Likert scale questions in this paper including 166 Zhabagly and 56 Abaiyl participants. The study used 18 indicators based on 4 dimensions: environmental, socio-cultural, economic and political. Results from this analysis indicate that the sustainability of CBE development in two communities is slightly different in all 4 dimensions. Zhabagly community is more successful in achieving sustainable CBE development than the Abaiyl community. The results reveal that the overall evaluation of the two communities on sustainability is moderate. However, both communities demonstrate that, potentially, they are politically unsustainable. As a result, we initially assert that the sustainability of CBE development in the Aksu-Zhabagly nature reserve (NR) is far from perfect. In particular, the positive economic and political impact of tourism development is not obvious. To address this shortcoming, tourism development organizations need to jointly develop a design policy for the sustainable development of CBE.

This study acknowledges the role of community-based ecotourism as a social transformation tool for local communities in a developing country context. This is a qualitative research study that used in-depth interviews, and field observations were performed and actively involved the pioneers of ecotourism development and community members in the state of Sabah, Malaysia. Through thematic analysis, community-based ecotourism as social transformation tools were identified focusing on economic, socio-cultural, and environmental aspects. The study uncovered that community-based ecotourism has delivered more positive social transformation impacts to the local community than negative ones. Despite the positive impacts of community-based ecotourism on the local community, this study warned that negative impacts of community-based ecotourism may jeopardize the ecotourism's potential as a social transformation tool for the local community, thus weakening its sustainability. Management implication The study acknowledged that the community-based ecotourism (CBE) development in the study site has enhanced the livelihood of local communities in terms of economic, socio-cultural, and environmental aspects which contribute to social transformation, thus increasing the value of community ecotourism in rural areas. However, negative social transformation delivered by the ecotourism development still needs to be addressed by the relevant stakeholders to ensure the future sustainability of ecotourism. Rural areas in Sabah are popular for ecotourism due to its abundant natural resources and wildlife attractions. Moreover, local community participation in ecotourism is evident due to the positive impacts of ecotourism to enhance their livelihoods. Thus, the local government should continue to motivate the local community who are participating in the ecotourism development by introducing relevant measures and initiatives. The study highlights several challenges faced by the local community to upskill their knowledge of hospitality and tourism related to CBE. Thus, local tourism policies may emphasize the local community aspiration and development through ecotourism.

Ecotourism projects are mostly implemented in naturally fragile ecosystems as a savior of nature, culture, and indigenous people. This paper aims to make quantitative study of ecotourism in protected areas by using bibliometric analysis. VOSviewer, a popular bibliometric software, was used to analyze as many as 1182 research articles published from 2002 to 2020. Those articles were collected from the Scopus database. The study measured three distinct types of bibliometric indicators (quantity, quality, and structural indicators) to analyze the published articles scientifically. The analysis uncovers ecotourism research in protected areas as an emerging and predominant field of research with a sound growth in annual publications and citations. Importantly, the majority of ecotourism research articles are published in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, Canada, and China. Nevertheless, ecotourism as a relevant research theme of is getting due importance in African and Asian countries for two key reasons: (1) wildlife and tribal populations, and (2) uncontaminated ecology and environment of ecotourism sites. Further, the main research themes of articles in the field of ecotourism in protected areas are broadly focused on conservation, visitor management, and community. Our findings reveal that controversial issues surrounding ecotourism and its relationship to protected areas, dominated by human-wildlife conflict, gender, and climate change, are attracting the attention of researchers worldwide.

Ecotourism is a growing sector, which is increasingly important because it promotes the environment as well as activities that bring together humans and nature. This study analyse the motivations of ecotourism and their influence on satisfaction and intentions to return and recommend a protected area. The empirical analysis was carried out in The Fauna Production Reserve “Puntilla de Santa Elena” in Ecuador. It is the most visited protected area in this country, filled with natural and cultural wealth. The sample consisted of 369 surveys obtained in situ, using the convenience method. For the statistical procedure, a factor analysis and a multiple regression analysis were used. The approach was quantitative with simple random sampling. Among the findings, the motivational dimensions “Escape and ego-defensive function,” “Marine nature,” and “Building personal relationships” were found as predictors of satisfaction in this destination. While the motivational dimensions “Escape and ego-defensive function,” “Marine nature,” and “Marine terrestrial” predict the intentions of returning to this protected area. Also, the dimensions “Marine nature” and “Escape and ego-defensive function” predict the intentions of recommending this destination. Therefore, products and services related to the nature and escape of tourists must be developed. This study analyses motivations as important predictors of loyalty in ecotourism, which implies significant results that will serve to create management plans in protected areas. This research examined Ecuador's most visited protected areas, considering their natural and cultural attractions. The findings contribute significantly to the academic literature. Finally, this study's practical and social implications will allow institutions and companies related to ecotourism to have information to plan strategies related to nature, achieving better benefits for their sustainable management. Management implications This study analyses motivations as important predictors of loyalty in ecotourism, which implies significant results that will serve to create tailored management plans in protected areas. The management concept should strengthen activities different from the visitors'daily routine and related to the main natural attractions. Ideally, these activities also encourage a socialization among the tourists and/or with local inhabitants.
