The launch of a new journal: Medical Reports
We are delighted to announce with this rst issue of Medical Reports
that for the rst time Elsevier has one place where authors can send any
medically related case reports. Elsevier has several health-related case
report journals with niche focuses on therapy areas which act, and will
continue to act, as important forums for those communities. But this
journal will be relevant to all clinical authors, and we hope will ll in the
gaps.
It can often be difcult to publish case reports in journals focusing on
full length original research where Impact Factors are important. And
yet case reports remain important to both readers and authors, which is
reected in the high full-text article download numbers that we see at
Elsevier across our case report journals. This is because case reports
contain information about diseases that can be rare or unique, they can
show advances in medical practice, evidence for the possibility of the
development of new drugs, areas where new research may be valuable
and are frequently used for medical education.
With the combination of digital indexes holding large amounts of
data and the growing power of AI to quickly read it, the value of
capturing many cases related to diseases is enhanced. The additional
cases that Medical Reports could add to Elsevier’s publication platforms
is therefore signicant and potentially hugely benecial to those
studying the epidemiology of diseases and their prevention.
In addition, writing case reports can be a valuable part of learning
the skill of scientic writing and many medical researchers do this early
in their career. Being able to document and record interesting and useful
cases not only helps junior researchers to develop their writing skills and
gain experience of journal publication and reviewing, but also starts the
process of sharing useful clinical ndings that can benet clinical
practice. We thoroughly encourage authors to follow the CARE guide-
lines in the write up of their cases and how to do this is a core part of the
journal’s Guide for Authors.
To that end, we welcome authors to submit to the journal and we
look forward to publishing many interesting cases in the future and
sharing the knowledge learned by many clinician researchers across the
globe.
