Analyzing the Root Causes of Sri Lanka's Economic Crisis: A Multi-faceted Examination Analyzing the Root Causes of Sri Lanka's Economic Crisis: A Multi-faceted Examination

Abstract and Figures

The Sri Lankan economic crisis of recent years has drawn significant attention from scholars, institutions, and policymakers alike, prompting an in-depth analysis of its root causes and implications. This paper employs a comprehensive approach to dissect the crisis, drawing from a myriad of sources, including academic works, governmental reports, and the insights of renowned experts in the field. The analysis categorizes the findings into eight key dimensions that structure the understanding of the crisis. These dimensions encompass policy initiatives, debt composition, political factors, foreign exchange challenges, resistance to IMF assistance, monetary policies, crisis management, and governance-related issues, including corruption and human rights concerns. The paper underscores the critical lessons for the global economy that emerge from Sri Lanka's experience. It highlights the significance of maintaining robust central bank reserves as a buffer against tightening global financial conditions. The crisis also raises concerns of a broader emerging market debt crisis, with a substantial proportion of emerging economies at risk of debt distress. Additionally, the paper examines the complexities of sovereign debt restructuring when a major creditor like China is involved, demonstrating the intricate negotiation dynamics in such scenarios. The analysis serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, economists, and scholars seeking to better understand the intricacies of economic crises in emerging markets and the lessons that can be drawn from Sri Lanka's experience.

The purpose of this study is to estimate the impact of sociocultural factors on investors' behavior in the South Pacific Stock Market (SPX) participation in Fiji using a novel methodological framework. I constructed a higher order factor: individual investors' willingness to participate in the SPX by confirming second-order Factor Structure and Overall Model Fit of the underpinning socioeconomic, cultural and psychic motivating factors thereof. The theoretical framework is primarily based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Four dimensions were hypothesized: Attitudes, Perceived Power, Social Norms, and Financial Knowledge, and showed significant and substantial loadings towards the investment willingness, with an acceptable model fit. The results confirm that four hypothesized dimensions are identifiable and distinct aspects; Social Norms dimension showed significant positive association (β =.159, p <.05) while, more importantly, the Perceived Power dimension showed a highly significant negative association (β =-0.246, p <.01) with investment activities of the participants. These findings may be useful in designing policies and strategies for stimulating the financial market in Fiji, especially, the SPX.

This research paper shows that credit mechanisms sometimes thrive towards strengthening socioeconomic powerbase of the capitalist class and form a mutually reinforcing function, which, from a Marxian point of view, could intensify concentration of wealth aggravating income/wealth inequality in society. We applied a critical ethnographical approach using the case study research design. Empirical data was extracted iteratively from participants and presented as thick-descriptive case studies. We argue that certain credit decisions enhance the socioeconomic power base of influential individuals, making them richer and powerful while ordinary credit applicants are discriminated against by strict application of credit evaluation rules. These observations bolster the Marxian claim that credit systems work as an exploitation mechanism towards concentration of wealth. These findings provide insight for policy formulators to design more productive financial capital mobility systems with the help of state-intervention to minimize credit-oriented exploitation and growing inequality.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the dual crisis in Sri Lanka during the pandemic. The health crisis was followed by democratic backsliding which directly impacted the fight for economic crime. The pre-pandemic political commitment to fight corruption is assessed with the pandemic environment and the policy decisions by the Government. Sri Lanka was a detailed case study of how politicians exploited the pandemic environment to suppress democracy and move their semi-autocratic agenda forward. However, Sri Lanka was not the only nation that faced such autocratic sentiments losing the democratic values. This paper discusses recommendations for improving the resources and investment to address economic crime in Sri Lanka. Design/methodology/approach Secondary data was used for the analysis introducing a theoretical framework referring to the work of Michel Foucault and Francis Fukuyama. The secondary data was used to develop an argument aligning political science with economic crime. Findings The Government disciplinary project launched during the pandemic directly impacted Sri Lankan democracy and structural changes made to the constitution. The heavy militarization was a sign of departure of long-cherished values of democracy in the country. Political clientelism backed by nepotism interfered with judicial independence and the fight against economic crime. Many accused, including those responsible for the largest corruption scandal, were not punished. The trust deficit has widened significantly between authorities and the public on fighting corruption in Sri Lanka. Research limitations/implications There are more factors for democratic backsliding than what is presented in this paper. The economic crime environment in Sri Lanka has many dimensions and the paper only highlights a few areas limiting to the secondary data available. Originality/value The paper discusses a unique perspective on how a pandemic could be misused to strengthen the autocratic rule and make structural changes to a nation, including constitution amendments. The pandemic environment was used to commit economic crime and suppress public opinion projecting the health crisis in the lockdown environment.

CREDIT CAPITAL, EMPLOYMENT AND POVERTY: A Sri Lankan Case Study ABSTRACT Purpose: This research paper seeks to show how poverty and certain financing decisions are mutually reinforcing and co-integrated and, why it is happening? The paper also attempts to fill a gap in the literature pertaining to the role of credit weapon and its co-integration with poverty in a country. Method: An exploratory study design is applied within case study research methodology using critical theory approach. The data collected by interviews and observations are complemented with documentary analysis and post-research events. These cases are from one private bank in Sri Lanka. Anonymity was necessary to protect the real cases therefore, some important background information had to be eliminated Results: The research shows that the powerful social class, which controls financial capital in Sri Lanka, follow preferential financing policies under the façade of nationalism or patriotism and social responsibility, to protect and strengthen their own socio-economic power base, while neglecting credit applications of potential entrepreneurs from powerless class. Therefore, opportunities are lost to the society/country as a whole, so the poor remains poor while powerful class acquires more power with preferencial credit capital resulting that poverty in the society and preferential lending processes are mutually reinforcing. Conclusions: The paper has important implications for policy makers and promoters of Micro, Small and Medium size Enterprises. The research findings indicate the need to place an emphasis on some radical structural changes in the financial capital mobility system to promote enterprises and employment generation to eradicate poverty in Sri Lanka and beyond. Keywords: Credit Capital, SMEs, Poverty, Marxism, Sri Lanka. JEL classification Code: O160 Economic Development: Financial Markets; Saving and Capital Investment; Corporate Finance and Governance

This paper examines the controversial role played by accounting within the discriminatory bank-lending practices of a privately owned bank in Sri Lanka. It reports on an analytical auto-ethnography (during the period 1994–2004) coupled with follow-up interviews and reiterated analyses. Data were analysed using Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of field, capital, habitus and symbolic violence. The empirical findings of the paper illustrate how key capitals at macro levels (social, cultural and symbolic) are mobilised in the dominance structures within the banking lending field and how individuals with given habitus behave and follow given strategies to deploy rational accounting systems at a micro level to translate discriminatory bank lending policies into practice and, as a result, create and reinforce discrimination.
