Abstract

Mogulones borraginis (Fabricius, 1792) belongs to the rare representatives of the genus in Central Europe. In the Czech Republic it was found only very rarely and sporadically during the last century. In this paper, mass occurrence of the species in the Czech Republic is confirmed by a new record from Lanžhot (southern Moravia). The species was found there in hundreds of individuals in ruderal habitats at its host plant, the common hound's-tongue (Cynoglossum officinale). The paper also summarizes literature and unpublished data from the Czech Republic.

SUMMARY
Mogulones borraginis (Figs 1, 2) is a rare and remarkable species of the beetle fauna of Central
Europe. Its distribution range includes southern parts of Western, Central and Eastern Europe from
Portugal to Ukraine, it is also found in North Africa in Algeria and Morocco. In the Czech Repub-
lic it belongs to very rare representatives of weevils and is found very rarely, often only in single
individuals. The weevil is considered to be oligophagous in Central Europe, associated with the
common hound’s-tongue (Cynoglossum officinale) (Fig. 3) and less frequently with Cynoglossum
montanum from the family Boraginaceae. The Red List of Czech Weevils includes this species as
endangered (EN).

Hundreds of individuals were swept and beaten from the host plant C. officinale located in secon-
dary ruderal habitats such as a flood protection dike, feeding grounds and a forest clearing (Figs. 5,
6).
M. borraginis has always been recognized as a rare species in the Czech Republic (Fig. 4). Only
historical data are available from Bohemia, the last record from the year 1986. After 2000, the
weevil has been found in three grid mapping squares only in southern Moravia and it is likely that
a targeted survey of the numerous sites of the host plant will confirm its presence in other localities.

In weed biological control programs, pre-release host-specificity testing relies traditionally on no-choice and choice feeding, oviposition, and development tests. Rarely have they included detailed examination of behavioral responses to olfactory and visual cues of biological control candidates, although a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying host recognition may explain potential discrepancies between choice and no-choice tests, and/or between tests conducted in the lab versus field conditions. We investigated how the seed-feeding weevil, Mogulones borraginis, distinguishes its host plant, Cynoglossum officinale, from three native confamilial non-target species in North America. In behavioral bioassays, M. borraginis responded to olfactory and visual cues individually and, to an even greater extent, to both plant cue modalities when offered simultaneously. In tests with the combined cues, M. borraginis was attracted to C. officinale but responded with indifference or was repelled by non-target plants. In electrophysiological experiments, we identified that M. borraginis responded to ten volatile compounds and four wavelengths of lights from inflorescences of C. officinale. We propose that studies of responses to multimodal plant cues can advance our understanding of how biocontrol candidate species discriminate among host plants and closely related non-target species, thereby increasing the accuracy of environmental safety assessments pre-release.

The first part of the annotated checklist summarizes the present knowledge on the distribution of the superfamily Curculionoidea except for Scolytinae and Platypodinae (below exSP) in the Czech Republic – divided into the historical lands Bohemia and Moravia, and Slovakia. It evaluates the present as well as historical occurrence of each species on these territories. In addition, bioindicator status and several other characteristics (endemicity, allochthonous species, new records for the territory) are given. In selected sections, systematic background, faunistics, historical research on the Curculionoidea families in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and the species composition of the Czech and Slovak weevil faunas, its postglacial progress and a short characterisation of some selected important areas are given. These evaluations are based on specimens available in the collections of Czech and Slovak institutions as well as private collections and records from hundreds of historical publications. The first part also contains comments on species that are interesting from faunistic, ecological or other points of view. Comments on species of the families Anthribidae, Rhynchitidae, Attelabidae, Nanophyidae, Brachyceridae, Dryopthoridae, Erirhinidae and several subfamilies of Curculionidae: Curculioninae, Bagoinae, Baridinae, Ceutorhynchinae, Conoderinae and Hyperinae are included in this part. Comments on the family Apionidae and the remaining subfamilies of Curculionidae will be presented in subsequent parts of the publication. At present, we consider the occurence of 817 species of the Curculionoidea (exSP) in Bohemia as reliably documented; the presence of another 51 species requires confirmation. 35 species mentioned in historical publications we exclude from the Bohemian fauna of Curculionoidea (exSP). We reliably know of 903 species of Curculionoidea (exSP) from Moravia, with another 53 species requiring confirmation and 59 previously published species excluded. Together 950 species are reliably known from the Czech Republic and the occurence of another 42 species requires confirmation. 68 species published in the past are excluded from the list of Curculionoidea (exSP) of the Czech Republic. For Slovakia, 1036 species are reliably documented and a further 48 species require confirmation. We have excluded 76 species published in the past as a part of the Curculionoidea (exSP) fauna of Slovakia. Altogether, from the whole territory of the Czech Republic and Slovakia (former Czechoslovak Republic) there are 1091 species of Curculionoidea (exSP) reliably documented, 37 species that require additional confirmation, and 102 species from historical publications are excluded from the Curculionoidea (exSP) fauna of this territory. Our paper adds 13 species for the first time to the Curculionoidea fauna of the Czech Republic, of which 5 species were found in Bohemia: Brachysomus hispidus (L. Redtenbacher, 1849), Hexarthrum duplicatum Folwaczny, 1966, Magdalis caucasica (Tournier, 1872), Nanophyes globiformis Kiesenwetter, 1864 and Otiorhynchus rugosus krattereri Boheman, 1843 and 9 species were found in Moravia: Anthribus scapularis Gebler, 1833, Donus viennensis (Herbst, 1795), Gonotropis gibbosa Le Conte, 1876, Gymnetron tibiellum Desbrochers, 1899, Lixus fasciculatus Boheman, 1836, Nanophyes globiformis Kiesenwetter, 1864, Otiorhynchus brunneus Krynicki, 1834, Sitona callosa Gyllenhal, 1834 and Tropiphorus micans Boheman, 1842. In addition 8 weevil species are new only for Bohemia: Ceutorhynchus merkli Korotyaev, 2000, Cleopomiarus micros (Germar, 1821), Curculio elephas (Gyllenhal, 1836), Donus oxalis (Herbst, 1795), Gasterocercus depressirostris (Fabricius, 1792), Ixapion variegatum (Wencker, 1864), Omphalapion buddebergi (Bedel, 1887) and Omphalapion pseudodispar Wanat, 1995 and 9 weevil species are new only for Moravia: Dorytomus reussi Formánek, 1908, Isochnus angustifrons (West, 1916), Mogulones venedicus (Weise, 1879), Onyxacalles croaticus (H. Brisout, 1867), Otiorhynchus armadillo (Rossi, 1792), Pelenomus olssoni (Israelson, 1972), Sibinia variata (Gyllenhal, 1836), Trichosirocalus rufulus (Dufour, 1851) and Tychius sharpi Tournier, 1873. We also report 16 weevil species not previously published from Slovakia: Brachysomus fremuthi Koštál, 1991, Brachysomus tenuicollis Yunakov, 2006, Ceratapion beckeri (Desbrochers, 1875), Ceutorhynchus hutchinsiae Tempère, 1975, Ceutorhynchus fallax Boheman, 1845, Ceutorhynchus merkli Korotyaev, 2000, Lixus lateralis (Panzer, 1793), Miarus simplex Solari, 1947, Omphalapion pseudodispar Wanat, 1995, Orchestes stobieckii Smreczyński, 1957, Otiorhynchus dacicus J.
