Abstract: Mogulones borraginis (Fabricius, 1792) belongs to the rare representatives of the genus
in Central Europe. In the Czech Republic it was found only very rarely and sporadically during the
last century. In this paper, mass occurrence of the species in the Czech Republic is confirmed by
-
viduals in ruderal habitats at its host plant, the common hound’s-tongue (Cynoglossum officinale).
The paper also summarizes literature and unpublished data from the Czech Republic.

SUMMARY
Mogulones borraginis (Figs 1, 2) is a rare and remarkable species of the beetle fauna of Central
Europe. Its distribution range includes southern parts of Western, Central and Eastern Europe from
Portugal to Ukraine, it is also found in North Africa in Algeria and Morocco. In the Czech Repub-
lic it belongs to very rare representatives of weevils and is found very rarely, often only in single
individuals. The weevil is considered to be oligophagous in Central Europe, associated with the
common hound’s-tongue (Cynoglossum officinale) (Fig. 3) and less frequently with Cynoglossum
montanum from the family Boraginaceae. The Red List of Czech Weevils includes this species as
endangered (EN).
Hundreds of individuals were swept and beaten from the host plant C. officinale located in secon-
dary ruderal habitats such as a flood protection dike, feeding grounds and a forest clearing (Figs. 5,
6).
M. borraginis has always been recognized as a rare species in the Czech Republic (Fig. 4). Only
historical data are available from Bohemia, the last record from the year 1986. After 2000, the
weevil has been found in three grid mapping squares only in southern Moravia and it is likely that
a targeted survey of the numerous sites of the host plant will confirm its presence in other localities.
