The Health Benefits and Edible Properties of Leek

Abstract

Leek is one the main vegetable which can promote good health and serves as a primary defense mechanism against different diseases. Leek (Allium ampeloprasum) is a robust, winter-hardy biennial plant which does not form a hard bulb like garlic or onion, and they are grown for their thick and long white stem. One of the most important herbal food which is very common in Iran is persian leek. The keywords of medicinal properties, traditional medicine, leek, health benefits, fla-vones, flavonol, and tannin were searched in Scopus, PubMed and Google Scholar. Leek is rich in different bioactive components such as sulphuric components and flavonoids, and saponin with a variety of biological characteristics such as antihypertensive, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antihyper-lipidemic, anticarcinogenic and antiatherosclerotic effects. One of the most important flavonoids aglycone in leek is kaempferol. The aim of this manuscript is to introduce and survey the most important pharmacological benefits of leek. Nutrition therapy with application of leek on the basis of traditional and modern science can be an approprate choice at treating common diseases.

1. Introduction
This edible vegetable has been used as traditional herbal medicine and a super food
in dierent countries [110], and most population of the world especially in developing
countries relies on traditional medicine [1621]. Leek utilization is very common in dier-
ent traditional medicines such as traditional Chinese medicines, traditional Persian med-
icine, traditional Indian medicine, etc. [2134]. Genus Allium contains around 500–700 spe-
cies and there are medicinal, edible and ornamental species among them, and plants in
Allium family are cool-season, herbaceous, biennial vegetables which are grown as annu-
als. Leek (Allium ampeloprasum) is winter-hardy and robust biennials which does not have
a hard bulb like garlic or onions. Leeks are sweeter than onion which have a creamy tex-
ture when cooked. They are more cold tolerant than garlic and onions, however they pre-
fer weer conditions for its site requirements. Leek evolved as a complex of dierent cyto-
and morpho-types widely distributed either in domesticated or wild range of the Medi-
terranean regions. The goal of the article is survey on the most notable pharmaceutical
advantages and health benets of leek with considering traditional knowledge and mod-
ern science of natural products. The current searching was done by the keywords in main
indexing systems including Scopus, PubMed/MEDLINE, Institute for Scientic Web of
Science, and search engine of Google Scholar. The keywords were health benets, tradi-
tional medicine, leek, pharmaceutical science, glycoside, rutin, and avones.

2. Leek and Pharmacological Benets
Allium species are considered rich sources of secondary metabolites, including phe-
nolics acids, and their derivatives, avonoids such as avanone, avan, avonol, avones,
dihydroavonol, avan-4-ol, avan-3-ol and avan-3,4-diol, and avonoid polymers such
as proanthocyanidins or condensed tannins which have tremendous health benets
[35,36]. The plant has a large amount of cystein sulfoxides, which has antioxidant and
anti-diabetic properties [37], and it has some active ingredient similar to garlic, which can
be useful for serum glucose and lipids [38]. The medicinal property of Allium is mainly
because of the presence of many sulfur containing bioactive components such as methyl
propenyl disulde, dimethyl disule, propyl propenyl disulde, methyl propyl trisulde,
dimethyl trisulde, methyl propenyl trisulde, S-methyl cystein sulfoxide, S-propyl
cystein sulfoxide, and S-propenyl cystein sulfoxide [39]. Chemical and nutritional charac-
terization of Allium ampeloprasum L. are energy, water, protein, carbohydrate, total fat,
ash, dietary, glucose, dry maer, sucrose, fructose, oxalic acid composition, polysaccha-
rides, malic acid, glutamic acid, succinic acid, macro and micro nutrient and heavy metal
[40–42]. Alliums were revered to possess anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties and in-
clude the powerful antioxidants, sulfur and other dierent phenolic components which
arouse signicant aentions [43,44]. Leek leaf extract has strong anthelmintic characteris-
tic and it can be used in killing of inactivation of mtacercarial parasitic infection in sh
[45]. Leek juices administration aenuated the severity of oxidative damage accompany-
ing dimethoate toxicity with hepatoprotective eects [46]. Allium ampeloprasum L. can con-
tribute to the survival of probiotic and benecial microorganisms in unsuitable storage
conditions and increase the tissue and sensory activities of the product [47]. In fact anti-
oxidative, antitoxic, anti-inammatory and immunostimulating activities of Allium am-
peloprasum crown it as a magical herb in modern era where people are suering from
dierent side eects of synthetic drugs [41,48].
3. Conclusions
Leek is an edible vegetable which has been used as traditional herbal medicine and
food in various countries as most population of the world in both developing and under
developed countries rely on traditional herbal medicines. Leek is considered as a rich
source of secondary metabolites such as avav, avones, avanone, avonol, avan-3-ol,
dihydroavonol, avan-3,4-dion, and avan-4-ol as well as phenolic acids and their de-
rivatives. The main avonoid polymers of leek is condensed tannins and proanthocya-
nidins, and the most famous avonoid aglycone in leek is kaempferol. Flavonoids, the
total polyphenol and tannin contents and antioxidant properties are strongly aected by
the environmental conditions. The most pharmacological advantages of leek are antisep-
tic, anti-asthma, diuretic, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, and it is important natural
medicine to protect skin again damage and reducing risk of gastrointestinal diseases. Leek
is one the main vegetable which can promote goof health and serves as a primary defense
mechanism against many diseases.

Knowledge about the pharmacological benefits of different seeds is an important factor for the cultivation and application of medicinal herbs and plants. The seeds of medicinal plants are stores of valuable and active secondary metabolites that have been commercially and economically beneficial and helpful for medicine and pharmacy. The major parameter of reproduction and the preservation of plants are seeds, which have a functional role in the distribution and establishment of plants in different regions. Five important seeds that have tremendous medicinal and pharmacological benefits are anise, basil, borage, cilantro, and chamomile. Anise seed is used as a spice, either whole or ground, and its essential oil and extract are also obtained from the seeds. Basil seeds have a long history of usage in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, and they are a good source of minerals, are high in fiber (including pectin), and are rich is flavonoids and other polyphenols. Borage seed oil is used for skin disorders, such as seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and neurodermatitis. Coriander is an annual herb that is part of the Apiaceae family, and the seeds are rich in iron, zinc, copper, and essential minerals, which can decrease bad cholesterol and improve good cholesterol in the body. Chamomile can be considered for the treatment of insomnia, hemorrhoids, anxiety, and diarrhea, and it may help with wound healing and skin irritation.

Since ancient times, the medicinal properties of plant material improve the quality of life. Medicinal plants and foods may provide phytotherapy a new dimension and enable their application to treat and prevention of diseases with the advantage of reducing chemical drugs. Historically, caraway, Chinese chives and cassia have enjoyed a rich tradition of use for flavouring, and medicinal purposes, because of wide range of secondary metabolites with potent antibacterial, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and other tremendous benefits. In many countries, medicinal plants are widely used as functional foods and daily supplements with the aim of promoting public health and both preventing and curing diseases. Shallot is a horticultural commodity belonging to spice vegetables. Shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.) is a perennial crop which is grown as an annual for its cluster of small cloves and bulbs. Persian shallot also is native and endemic of Iran and grows as a wild plant across Zagross mountains at high elevations. Shallot is an important source of carbohydrate, vitamin A, B, and C. Phenolic compound in Shallot consi st of gallic acid, apigenin, eriodictyol, quercetin, isoquercetin, rutin, kaempferol, catechin and tannic acid. The most important health benefits of shallots are reduction of cancer risk, improve heart health, aid detoxification, help control diabetes, improve brain health, help to fight obesity and treat allergies, boost bone health, maintain vision health, boost immunity, improve skin health, increase abdominal health and keep hair healthy. Ginseng is the most famous of the Chinese herbs throughout the world, and has been one of the most valued herb in China. Traditional Chinese medicine as an essential element of alternative and complementary medicine, advanced over thousands of years with its own distinctive arrangement of therapies, diagnostics theories and in Asian countries, particularly China. In most parts of the world, especially western countries, Ginseng has been largely employed in recent decades and has become renowned for its important function in treating and preventing so many diseases. Panax ginseng consisted of a number of active constituents, like ginsenosides, nitrogenous substances, carbohydrates, phytosterol, organic acids, essential oils, amino acids, peptidoglycans, it's repeated, nitrogen-containing compounds, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and other phenolic compounds. Ginsenosides are classified into two main groups known as protopanaxadiol (PPD) and protopanaxatriol (PPT). Pharmacological activities of ginseng extracts are effects on the central nervous system, antipsychotic action, tranquilizing effects, protection from stress ulcers, increase of gastrointestinal motility, anti-fatigue action, endocrinological effects, enhancement of sexual behaviour, acceleration of metabolism, or synthesis of carbohydrates, lipids, RNA, and proteins. More clinical studies are necessary to uncover the numerous substances and their effects in ginseng that contribute to public health.

The survival ability of probiotic bacteria in food products is one of the most important challenges ahead. The wild leek (Allium ampeloprasum) herb of the Allium family contains various prebiotic compounds that can stimulate the growth of probiotic bacteria. In this research, sensory properties of cheese based on Allium ampeloprasum as a medicinal plant and flavoring was evaluated. For this purpose, after chemical tests on raw milk, different cheese treatments were prepared to determine the effect of fresh and dry concentrations of 1 and 2% of plants, as well as non-herb control containing probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus (PTCC 1643) on the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria. The results showed that probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus had decreasing trend in all treatments and control during storage, but in the treatments containing Allium ampeloprasum, this trend was less. At the end of the 45th day, the lowest bacterial count (Log CFU/g) was observed in the treatment without plant (6.69) and the highest in the sample containing one percent dry plant (8.12). The results of pH assessment also showed that in all samples, the process of pH reduction observed naturally with time of the cheese ripening. However, in treatments containing plant, there was significant difference between 30 and 45 days with non- plant control (P≤0.05). At the end of the 45th day, the lowest bacterial count (Log CFU/g) was observed in the treatment without plant (6.69) and the highest in the sample containing one percent dry plant (8.12). In sensory evaluation, samples containing 1% dry plant and probiotic bacteria had the highest score among different treatments and specified the addition of Allium ampeloprasum as a plant additive could increase the sensory properties of the product and could be successfully used to produce synbiotic cheese.

Background Medicinal plants have become the focus of intense researches through the identification and determination of their pharmacological benefits with their different chemical constituents. Objective The aim of this mini-review is to highlight the most important health benefits of Syrian bean caper and parsnip. Methods The manuscript consists of review articles, randomized control experiments, and analytical studies, which have been gathered from different sources such as Scopus, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and PubMed. A review of the literature was carried out using keywords such as health benefits, pharmaceutical properties, Syrian bean caper (Zygophyllum fabago L.), and Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa L.). Results Syrian bean caper is good for diabetes, lower cholesterol, is appropriate for people aiming for weight loss, is a good source of vitamin K for healthy bones, protects skin from harmful ultraviolet rays, prevents cancer and skin ailments, protects from allergies, helps in digestion, increases immunity, treats anemia, moistens skin, helps in relieving congestion. Syrian bean caper is also anexcellent source of minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, and sodium which gives stronger teeth, is a source of anti-ageing, good for the eyes, and reduces skin disorders, it consists of a good amount of iron and vitamin B which makes it a good candidate to have healthy hair, and relieves constipation. Parsnips are a type of root vegetable, closely related to parsley roots and carrots. Parsnips are an excellent source of various nutrients, minerals, and vitamins such as folate, vitamins C and K, they are rich in antioxidants, a great source of soluble and insoluble fiber, a great source of a healthy weight loss diet, and support immune function. Conclusion According to phytochemical advantages and pharmacological benefits, Syrian bean caper (Zygophyllum fabago L.) and Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) show their importance as medicinal plants in both traditional and modern medicine.

Introduction Biostimulants consist of natural ingredients, metabolites of fermentation, micro-organisms, algae or plant extracts, bacteria, mushrooms, humus substances, amino acids, biomolecules, etc. Methods In this study, all relevant English-language articles were collected. The literature was reviewed using the keywords of biostimulant, medicinal plant, aromatic plant, natural products, and pharmaceutical benefits from Google Scholar, Scopus, and PubMed databases. Results The significant and promoting impact of biostimulants has been reported for different medicinal and aromatic plants, such as salicylic acid for ajuga, artichoke, ajwain, basil, common rue, common sage, common thyme, coneflower, coriander, dendrobium, desert Indian wheat, dragonhead, fennel, fenugreek, feverfew, ginger, groundnut, guava, henna, Iranian soda, lavender, lemon balm, lemongrass, Malabar spinach; seaweed extract on almond, bird, s eye chili; amino acids on artemisia, broccoli, chamomile, beneficial bacteria on ashwagandha; humic acid on black cumin, cannabis, chicory, garlic, gerbera, Hungarian vetch, Moldavian dragonhead, niger plant; chitosan on dragon fruit, marigold, milk thistle, etc. The suggested mechanisms include the stimulatory impacts on the activity of enzymes involved in different biosynthetic processes, the hormone-like activity of biostimulant compounds and the improvement of nutrient uptake of plants. Conclusion The current manuscript gives many examples of the potential of biostimulants for medicinal and aromatic plant production. However, further studies are needed to better understand the effectiveness of different biostimulants and foliar applications in sustainable agriculture.

A review of the literature was carried out using the keywords such as pennyroyal, Mentha pulegium L., natural products and pharmaceutical benefits. Results The major pennyroyal essential oils are pulegone, menthone, isomenthone, piperitone, mentol, neo-menthol and 3-Octanol. The major health benefits of pennyroyal are antiseptic, depurative, digestive, anti-rheumatic, anti-arthritic, antimicrobial, antibacterial, stomachic, astringent, emmenagogue, decongestant and insecticide. Conclusion Nutrition therapy on the basis of traditional medicinal science is definitely useful for treating common diseases. Pennyroyal has notable promising health benefits, and its phytochemical and pharmacological benefits indicate its importance in modern medicinal studies.

Traditional medicines are considered as both food items and medicine which have been used a history of thousands years. They have contained active ingredients aerial, underground parts of plants and they contain variety of pharmacological active plant constituents. The aim of this study was to summarize and highlight the most important traditional and modern health benefits of cashew nuts. The literature search was conducted in PubMed, Science direct, Scopus, Medline and Google scholar databases. The main compounds of cashew nuts are β-phellandrene + limonene, methyl chavicol, germacrene D, germacrene B, trans-α-bergamotene, β-copaene, linalool, α-cadinol, β-phellandrene, β-caryophyllene, β-bisabolene, 9-epi-(E)-caryophyllene, α-phellandrene, epi-α-cadinol, hexadecanoic acid, and epi-α-muurolol. The most important pharmacological benefits of Anacardium occidentale are anti-bacterial activities, anti-diabetic activities, anti-diarrheal activities, anti-fungal activities, anti-hyperglycemic activities, anti-inflammatory activities, anti-microbial activities, anti-oxidant activities, anti-tumor activities, insecticidal activities and wound healing. Cashew nut is a high potential natural functional food because of its high pharmacological activities and efficacious natural drug.
