Travel has many situations where context-aware computing can bring important benefits: pointing out notorious delays or bad weather during the planning phase, allowing the user to replan for handling unexpected situations, or suggesting flight alternatives to avoid strikes. In this paper, we describe an approach for integrating context-aware computing to a mobile travel assistant. Travel plans, generated using booking information and meeting descriptions, are enriched within compact and powerful structures, called User Task Models. These structures are transferred to a mobile device enabling the support for the traveler during his trip. The overall result is what we call an Intelligent Mobile Travel Assistant.

We describe the Conference Assistant, a prototype mobile, context-aware application that assists conference attendees. We discuss the strong relationship between context-awareness and wearable computing and apply this relationship in the Conference Assistant. The application uses a wide variety of contexts and enhances user interactions with both the environment and other users. We describe how the application is used and the context-aware architecture on which it is based.

In addition, it may display a number to which the called-party should phone back (some systems allow a vocal message to be conveyed about the call-back number). It is then up to the recipient to use the conventional telephone system to call-back confirming the signal and determine the required action. Although useful in practice there are still circumstances where it is not ideal. For instance, if the called party does not reply the controller has no idea if they: 1) are in an area where the signal does not penetrate 2) have been completely out of the area for some time 3) have been too busy to reply or 4) have misheard or misread the call-back number. Moreover, in the case where there are a number of people who could respond to a crisis situation, it is not known which one is the nearest to the crisis and therefore the most suitable to contact. This paper is concerned with developing personal computing aids for the mobile fieldworker. A description of mobile computing and context-aware technology is given, suggesting how hand-held computing devices that are aware of various factors of their users environment (such as location) could be helpful. In particular, the concept of a stick-e note is introduced as a general-purpose context-aware technology that we have developed. The needs of fieldworkers and the suitability of stick-e note technology to their tasks is addressed, and a number of areas where stick-e note technology could help are identified. The design of a prototypical sticke-e note system that attempts to meet these needs is introduced and an account given of an extensive trial of this prototype in assisting in a behavioural study of giraffe in Kenya.

comMotion is a location-aware computing environment which links personal information to locations in its user’s life; for example, comMotion reminds one of her shopping list when she nears a grocery store. Using satellite- based GPS position sensing, comMotion gradually learns about the locations in its user’s daily life based on travel patterns. The full set of comMotion functionality, including map display, requires a graphical user interface. However, because it is intended primarily for mobile use, including driving, the core set of reminder creation and retrieval can be managed completely by speech.
