Abstract—Accurately forecasting the losses in high-
frequency magnetic materials is a significant challenge
when optimizing the design of high-frequency (HF) mag-
netic components. Existing models do not adequately
consider the intricate interactions among geometry, and
temperature factors, which have distinct and substantial
impacts on core losses. A new method is introduced, which
utilizes a Deep Neural Network (DNN) model to construct
parameterized models for high-frequency magnetic core
loss based on measurement data. The DNN employs the
Gaussian Error Linear Unit (GELU) activation function
and Huber loss function, and its performance is compared
to that of a conventional Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) acti-
vation and Mean Squared Error (MSE) loss function. The
proposed DNN demonstrates significantly higher accuracy
and improved robustness.
I. INTRODUCTION
HF magnetic components play a critical role in
power electronics systems and their evolution towards
higher power density and efficiency. The design of
HF magnetic components can be the bottleneck for
designing the whole power conversion systems, for being
the bulkiest components of the system and possessing
the main losses, including winding and magnetic iron
losses [1]. Nevertheless, accurately modelling magnetic
core losses is not a trivial task, but requires exten-
sive measurements. These challenges arise from various
developments, including the use of modulation control
methods like pulse width modulation (PWM) that in-
troduce a diversity of excitation waveforms beyond the
traditional sinusoidal excitation of magnetic materials
[2]. As a result, these waveforms generally contain a
significant amount of harmonic content. Additionally, the
increase in switching frequencies into the MHz range,
driven by advances in semiconductor technology towards
wide bandgap devices, is necessary to realize compact
power converters, but it further exacerbates the complex-
ity of magnetic component characterization, modeling,
and measurements [3]. Magnetic materials also have a
changing behavior, such Ferrites N87, different sizes and
shapes, as well as temperatures with different excitations
could lead relatively different magnetic losses [4].
To understand the core losses, measurements should
be done first, then modelling could be harnessed to
predict the losses in a specific situation. Engineers tend
to go to the core loss models for predictions directly.
There are many methods of magnetic loss modelling.
They can be divided into categories as follows.
Core Loss Separation: the loss is torn down into
hysteresis and eddy current loss, illustrated in [5].
It can be applied with no sufficient measurement
situation.
Steinmetz Equation (SE) Families: core loss density
is derived based on SE [6]. [7]- [11] improved the
SE to predict more accurate losses with various
excitations.
BH Curve Based: the energy produced inside the
core is the area of the BH loop, such as Preisach
[12] and Jiles-Atherton models. They need lots of
parameters and accurate BH loops.
Since SE-based models are most often used by
engineers, measurements are needed by such approaches.
Core loss measurements can be categorized as calori-
metric and electric methods. Core losses cause temper-
ature increases, and based on thermal properties and
temperature changes, the core losses could be estimated.
However, it is challenging to separate the iron loss from
the winding conduction loss. The electric method can be
used to avoid this problem. By measuring the induced
voltage and excited current, the winding losses could be

excluded from the measurements. The electric method is
chosen, and a measurement kit is proposed in this paper.
All the SE-based models rely on the Steinmetz
parameters. Engineers use them with constant Steinmetz
parameters. However, the parameters change with differ-
ent frequencies and different core sizes and structures.
All these discrete factors, such as the toroid size of
Ferrites N87, can affect the core losses. Therefore this
paper provides comprehensive measurement data among
different frequency ranges and sizes of magnetic material
to further improve the magnetic losses modelling, to shift
our model from material datasheets based to empirical
measurements based.
With all these discrete parameters, an accurate core
loss model must contain information on core geometry,
excitations, and nonlinear features with different oper-
ation conditions. Then, in this paper, machine learning
techniques, proven to be effective in solving nonlinear
problems, are applied to deal with these challenges. In
the context of the general advances of Machine Learning
technologies in power electronics applications, the DNN
approaches are widely used in designing and modelling
high-frequency magnetics in many different ways [13]–
[19]. For example, MagNet projects in [15]– [17] are
aimed at storing massive data for data-driven research on
high-frequency magnetics with machine learning tools.
Magnet collected massive core data for various core
materials. However, for a specific core, the core sizes
with different operating conditions are not sufficient for
the specific core loss modelling. [18] uses the Magnet
database with frequency and maximum flux density as
the input to train the DNN to get the prediction, without
considering sizes of magnetic material, temperature, and
other factors. [19] includes the DC bias as the input and
output predictions for core losses and winding losses to
train the DNN. This paper is intended to build massive
data taking the side effects and different operations into
account to improve the core loss model by the DNN
approach. During the modeling process, a comparison
of various activation functions and loss functions reveals
that the Gaussian Error Linear Unit (GELU) activation
function and Huber loss function outperform the conven-
tional Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) activation function
and MSE loss function for core loss modeling.
The paper introduced core loss maps from the SE
family. Then a measurement kit is proposed for practical
measurements. And the measurement results are verified
with the datasheet. Then the datasets from the mea-
surements, including discrete size factors, and operating
conditions, are applied for the proposed DNN model.
The model will be testified with certain conclusions in
the end.
II. CO RE LO SS MA P FO R SE
For SE, core losses can be predicted by a formula
where the losses are derived from the excitation fre-
quency and the maximum flux density.

Where k,α, and βare the Steinmetz parameters,
which are usually given by manufacturers or can be
derived by curve fitting. From the manufacture datasheets
[20], the SE parameters could be characterized as shown
in Table I.

With the constant SE parameters, we could have
a constant Ferrite N87 core loss map in Fig. 1. The
problem is that with all the different sizes, the core losses
are under the assumption of constant SE parameters. It
will be shown in the following, the sizes and different ex-
citations change the core losses with the same frequency
and maximum flux density. This paper will take these
factors into account to get better core loss predictions.

III. MEASUREMENT SET UP A ND DATA COLLECTION
This paper is aimed at giving comprehensive mea-
surement datasets for the core loss prediction model with

characterizing size and temperature factors. A measure-
ment kit was proposed, and the device under test (DUT)
is the core to be characterized and tested. Four different
sizes of Ferrite N87 cores (B64290L0618X087) were
selected, as shown in Fig. 2.

The magnetic characteristics of these four sizes of
cores are shown in Table II, where Aestands for the ef-
fective cross-sectional area, le, for the effective magnetic
path length, and Ve, for the effective magnetic volume.
With the measurement setup, the current and voltage
data are collected first from the measurement kit. The
data processing techniques are implemented in MAT-
LAB. First based on the current and voltage waveform,
the operational BH loop can be derived by (2) and (3).

Core power loss would be derived, with the provided
core effective magnetic volume Ve, the power loss den-
sity is shown in (4).

Based on (4), the core loss density of each size with
different operating conditions could be derived and ready
to do core losses characterization and data collection.
All the data post-processing steps are done in MAT-
LAB. First, Ferrites N87 R34 was tested, as the one

shows the comparisons between our measurement and
the datasheets with the same size core at the temperature
T=25°C.
Then, triangular excitations are used for measure-
ments. Our measurements are done without DC bias,
where a capacitor is connected to the DUT for filtering
the DC offset. An example of how core losses change

with sizes and different operating conditions is intro-
duced in Fig. 4. With constant Steinmetz parameters,
the core loss model predictions with different core size
are large, as an example of comparisons between mea-
surement results and SE predictions of N87 R16 cores
in Fig. 5. Based on this, this paper aims at providing
an efficient and more accurate DNN prediction model.
Then the data set is collected as in Fig. 6. Overall, for

each size, 3440 data points were collected and in total,
13760 sets of data points were aggregated for further
DNN training.

IV. DNN BASED COR E LOS S (DNNCL)
PREDICTIONS
The DNN is a well-known technique to tackle dis-
crete, multi-input, and non-linear regression problems
[13]– [17]. It can model high-frequency magnetic be-
haviour with less effort without any profound and de-
tailed physical theories [21]– [23]. In Fig. 7, an illus-
tration of DNN structure. DNN has three main layers:
one input layer, one output layer, and hidden layers in
between the input and output layer. With multiple hidden
layers, the deep network is vividly defined.

In this paper, the input layer contains four input
features, frequency, flux density, size information, and
temperature. The output layer is the core loss power
density. To note that, DNNCL can work as a surrogate
model for accelerating the process of power electronics
design.
As the basic component of neural networks, a neuron

represents the offset or bias term. The activation func-
tion, represented by the symbol ϕ, is applied to introduce
nonlinearity to the neurons and can be utilized to fit
different nonlinear models. Among various activation
functions, the ReLU is widely employed in practical
applications.
One limitation of ReLU is the ”dying ReLU” prob-
lem, where some neurons may become inactive and
output zero for a specific range of inputs, effectively
”dying” and not contributing to the learning process.
GELU can help alleviate this issue by providing non-
zero outputs for a wider range of inputs, reducing the
likelihood of dead neurons. Unlike ReLU, which is a
piecewise linear function, GELU is a smooth function.
It is derived from the Gaussian cumulative distribution
function, which gives it a smooth and continuous shape.
This smoothness can help with better gradient flow
during training and can result in more stable and efficient
learning [24]. The GELU activation function can be
mathematically represented as follows:

In the given equation, Φ(x)presents the cumulative
function of the Gaussian normal distribution for the
variable x. However, directly computing this equation is
not feasible. As a result, an approximation can be used,
which can be expressed as follows:

When it comes to the number of neurons and hidden
layers, various choices can promise a good performance
of DNN. Therefore, DNNCL is not fixed. In general, for
power electronics applications [17], no strict principle for
the number requirements. A small network can limit the
data-driven learning capacity, while a large network can
lead to overfitting and prolonged learning time. However,
data scaling techniques and training processing can be
effective for the DNN performances [18].
Using the dataset of measurements collected above,
the DNNCL can be trained and the structure and parame-
ters of trained DNNCL can be applied later for engineers
to predict core losses with user-defined inputs. MATLAB
built-in DNN toolbox is used to explore the suitable
DNN structures. Finally, a DNN with 15 hidden layers
was chosen. The dataset was split into three catalogs
randomly: training (70%), validation (15%), and testing
(15%) sets
The Mean Squared Error (MSE) loss function is
commonly employed in general regression problems due
to its effectiveness in gradient descent convergence [25].
However, when it comes to DNNCL modeling, the
presence of outlier samples poses a challenge. The MSE
loss function squares the error, amplifying the impact of
outliers and leading to a slower decrease in the test loss
during training. Consequently, achieving the desired loss
threshold becomes difficult, or even impossible, under
these circumstances.
The Huber loss function is a robust loss function
that combines the best properties of the Mean Absolute
Error (MAE) and MSE [26]. It is less sensitive to outliers
compared to MSE. The Huber loss function calculates
the squared error when the absolute error is small and
the absolute error itself when the error is large. This
allows the Huber loss function to balance the advantages
of both MAE and MSE. Hence, the Huber loss function
is applied to DNNCL, which is defined as follows:

In this paper, the hyperparameter (denoted as δ) of
the Huber loss function is set to 1. The Huber loss
function is defined in terms of the true value (y) and
the predicted value (f(x)). In this case, y stands for the
measured core loss density, and f(x) for the predicted
core loss density from DNNCL.

An optimization algorithm is employed to minimize
the loss function, which serves as the objective function
during the optimization process. The weight factors and
offset in the neural network are continuously adjusted
to reduce the training error associated with the loss
function. To leverage the benefits of the adaptive moment
estimation (Adam) algorithm [27], which allows for

independent adaptive learning rates by computing first-
and second-order moment estimates of gradients, the
Adam function is chosen as the optimization function.
The workflow of training DNNCL can be observed in
Fig.8.
V. DNNCL PREDICTION RE SU LTS
Fig.9 (a) and (b) show the training performance with
Huber loss and MSE values. From the figures, it can be
included that with the measured data set, the DNNCL
with GELU and Huber loss function learns faster with
the input parameters and output core loss densities,
and provides more robustness. The Huber loss function
offers robustness to outliers while providing a balanced
measure of error. It can be a suitable alternative to MSE
in scenarios where outliers may be present or when you
want to strike a balance between penalizing large errors
and maintaining stability in training.

Also, Fig. 10 depicts the error histogram, repre-
senting data points and the relative error between the
measured values and the predicted values. It is confirmed
that the DNNCL is trained for the tested data to verify
the prediction accuracy and capacity. Based on the
performance results, the trained DNNCL structure and
parameters are stored for the test and future predictions.

Based on the comparisons of predicted vs. target val-
ues for the training, validation, and test datasets, which
achieved an impressive R-value of 0.9997 in Fig.11,
it is evident that there exists a significant correlation
between the predicted and target values. This showcases
the strong predictive capability of DNNCL with GELU
activation and Huber loss function, enabling accurate
core loss predictions using four discrete input features.
VI. CONCLUSION
This paper proposed a DNNCL with GELU and
Huber loss function with geometry and temperature
information, including different operating points. The
results indicate that the specific DNNCL is able to
distinguish different sizes with same operation conditions
to give a relatively accurate core loss density predictions.
The proposed model for magnetic loss estimations can
work as an accurate surrogate model in the process of
high frequency magnetic design for power electronics
designers. With the achieved performance, the DNNCL
can benefit from various power electronics engineering
challenges such as loss estimation for HF magnetic
components design.

Traditional methods such as Steinmetz's equation (SE) and its improved variant (iGSE) have demonstrated limited precision in estimating power loss for magnetic materials. The introduction of Neural Network technology for assessing magnetic component power loss has significantly enhanced accuracy. Yet, an efficient method to incorporate detailed flux density information—which critically impacts accuracy—remains elusive. Our study introduces an innovative approach that merges Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) with a Feedforward Neural Network (FNN), aiming to overcome this challenge. To optimize the model further and strike a refined balance between complexity and accuracy, Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) is employed to identify the ideal combination of hyperparameters, such as layer count, neuron number, activation functions, optimizers, and batch size. This optimized Neural Network outperforms traditionally intuitive models in both accuracy and size. Leveraging the optimized base model for known materials, transfer learning is applied to new materials with limited data, effectively addressing data scarcity. The proposed approach substantially enhances model training efficiency, achieves remarkable accuracy, and sets an example for Artificial Intelligence applications in loss and electrical characteristic predictions with challenges of model size, accuracy goals, and limited data.

This paper introduces Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models to enhance core loss predictions in high-frequency magnetic components. Conventional methods, such as the Steinmetz Equation, often fail to accurately capture the nonlinear dynamics and complex waveforms characteristic of high-frequency magnetic core losses. Previous approaches using Multi-layer Perceptron, Transfer Learning, and Generative Adversarial Networks have encountered issues like data boundaries and noise, adversely affecting prediction accuracy. Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models overcome these challenges by improving both interpolation and extrapolation capabilities, achieving a minimum average relative error of 0.99% across all datasets provided by the MagNet Challenge. Furthermore, Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models, first introduced into power electronics, support effective data augmentation, validated through the generation of high-quality core loss data for Nanocrystalline Ring cores in three different sizes (R16, R25, R50). This robust modeling framework not only reduces prediction errors but also enhances dataset comprehensiveness, thereby facilitating the design and optimization of next-generation power electronic components.

This paper tackles the complex challenge of predicting magnetic iron losses in high-frequency magnetic components, introducing a novel Conditional Generative Adversarial Network model. Diverging from traditional loss prediction methodologies that often overlook intricate interactions of factors, our Conditional Generative Adversarial Network framework is designed to comprehensively incorporate diverse aspects such as material properties, geometrical variations, and environmental conditions. To facilitate this advanced approach, a specialized fourwire measurement kit was employed, which significantly enriched the training dataset with a wide range of measurements. When benchmarked against conventional Deep Neural Network models, the Conditional Generative Adversarial Network not only achieves faster convergence but also demonstrates markedly superior accuracy in predicting iron losses. This superiority is particularly notable in scenarios that extend beyond the training data's range, underscoring the model's robustness and adaptability. Such advancements in predictive accuracy and efficiency represent a significant leap forward in the design and optimization of high-frequency magnetic components.

The paper provides an overview of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is applied in designing highfrequency magnetic components, primarily high-frequency inductors and transformers, for power electronics systems. Four categories of AI, including expert systems, fuzzy logic, metaheuristic methods, and machine learning techniques, are addressed. Firstly, AI models for estimating losses in high-frequency magnetic components are discussed. Subsequently, AI-based design methods in high-frequency inductors and transformers are observed. Then, AI tools applied to the automatic design of high-frequency magnetic components are introduced and compared. Drawing insights from an analysis of over 200 publications, the paper highlights significant advancements: the development of AI-driven models for precise loss estimation in highfrequency magnetic components, the application of AI in optimizing design configurations for the components, and the automation of design processes. These achievements demonstrate AI’s capability to enhance the efficiency, performance, and innovation in high-frequency magnetic component design, offering a roadmap for future research in power electronics systems.

Magnetic components play a critical role in power electronics systems and their evolution towards higher power density and efficiency. Nevertheless, accurately modelling magnetic core losses is not a trivial task, requiring extensive measurements. In the context of the general advances of Machine Learning technologies in power electronics applications, this paper presents a Deep Neural Network (DNN) approach to core loss estimations. Various internal parameters of the DNN are tested and compared, to identify the optimal DNN structure for the core loss estimation, including the number of hidden layers, number of neurons, data transformation, and different activation functions. The training data-set comprises the MagNet database for N87 toroid magnetic cores, based on an experimental data acquisition system capable of automatically measuring various magnetic cores under arbitrary excitation signals. The results of the DNN models indicate that a DNN with suitable parameters can robustly and accurately model the core losses. The attainable accuracy is well within the required range for magnetic core losses. The optimal structure proposed in this paper consists of 10 hidden layers with sigmoid activation functions, 10 neurons in each layer, integrating a log-transformation and data normalization. The model is validated with extensive experimental tests similar to the MagNet measurement system. Furthermore, tests at higher switching frequencies up to 1MHz indicate that the model can predict losses for parameters outside the range of its training data. With the achieved performance, the DNN can benefit various power electronics engineering challenges such as loss estimation for inductor design.

The non-linear property of magnetics poses challenges for their loss modelling in power electronics due to lacking full physical models. As a practical approach for their loss estimation, the manufacturers can pre-measure the losses in standalone rigs and distribute the "loss maps" as interpolated look-up tables/curves for the end users. However, with more factors discovered that impact the losses, e.g., DC bias and load conditions, the dimensions of the loss maps cannot be solved by conventional surface/curve fitting methods. This paper addresses this problem by applying the Artificial Neural Network (ANN). For both inductors and transformers, Neural Network-aided loss maps (NNALMs) are designed and evaluated with comparisons against conventional loss maps to reveal the limitations of the latter caused by physically intercoupled input variables. The NNALMs not only show superior accuracy throughout the whole datasets, but also enable the loss maps to expand the dimensions to account for more factors (e.g., load conditions in transformers) and generate multiple outputs (e.g., both the winding loss and core loss). The ANN-aided loss maps can be distributed as digitized datasheets of standardized magnetics, enabling rapid, accurate and user-friendly loss estimations for power electronics engineers.

This paper gives an overview of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications for power electronic systems. The three distinctive life-cycle phases, design, control, and maintenance are correlated with one or more tasks to be addressed by AI, including optimization, classification, regression, and data structure exploration. The applications of four categories of AI are discussed, which are expert system, fuzzy logic, metaheuristic method, and machine learning. More than 500 publications have been reviewed to identify the common understandings, practical implementation challenges, and research opportunities in the application of AI for power electronics.

This paper analyzes the potential of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for the modeling and optimization of magnetic components and, specifically, inductors. After reviewing the basic properties of ANNs, several potential modeling and design workflows are presented. A hybrid method, which combines the accuracy of 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) and the low computational cost of ANNs, is selected and implemented. All relevant effects are considered (3D magnetic and thermal field patterns, detailed core loss data, winding proximity losses, coupled loss-thermal model, etc.) and the implemented model is extremely versatile (30 input and 40 output variables). The proposed ANN-based model can compute 50'000 designs per second with less than 3% deviation with respect to 3D FEM simulations. Finally, the inductor of a 2 kW DC-DC buck converter is optimized with the ANN-based workflow. From the Pareto fronts, a design is selected, measured, and successfully compared with the results obtained with the ANNs. The implementation (source code and data) of the proposed workflow is available under an open-source license.

Nowadays, a big portion of all electrical power is transported through a power electronics converter, which comprises invariably magnetic components. The losses of these components are an important share of the total electric power losses. Consequently, there is a need for outstanding magnetic components with low-loss and high dense properties. Moreover, with the introduction of Wide Bandgap semiconductors, high performance magnetic components at high frequency operation have been demanded. However, there is not a clear understanding about how magnetics components operate at high frequencies and under the influence of these semiconductors. Then, magnetic characterization is essential to understand the performance of these components at the mentioned conditions. During these characterization procedures, the harmonic content, introduced by the switching of the fast semiconductors, raise higher challenges for an accurate identification of the magnetic properties. Therefore, having a complete understanding of how these harmonic contents affect the operation of the magnetic components could be beneficial for improving the components themselves. This paper studies the harmonic content influence of Gallium Nitride inverters on iron loss characterization procedures. This study is carried out comparing three types of current sensors for identifying harmonic content at high switching frequency excitations. It was found that the sensor characteristics play an important role in the characterization.

Recently, novel magnetic materials have been developed for high efficiency and high power density electric motors. In addition, next-generation semiconductor devices like Silicon Carbide (SiC) or Gallium Nitride (GaN) have been introduced for power converters due to their high frequency operation. Therefore, high frequency operation of new magnetic materials is possible when they are driven by GaN or SiC Inverters. Nevertheless, iron loss characterization of magnetic materials when they are excited by high frequency signals have not been conducted yet. This paper introduces the iron losses characterization of a magnetic material at high carrier frequency excitation using a GANFET inverter. This characterization was carried out by the experimental evaluation of iron losses at carrier frequencies from 5 kHz to 500 kHz at different deadtimes. As a result of the measurements, iron losses seem to have a trend to increase at high carrier frequencies and large deadtimes. In addition, filtering is introduced and it seems to be an effective technique for reducing iron losses.
