John Sloboda Publications
September 2023
This is my complete academic publication list in date order, with links to online versions where
they exist. The great majority of links are to my ResearchGate pages.
The list is divided into three portions
A. Music Psychology (167 items) pp 2-30
B. Peace and conflict issues (14 items) pp 30-32
C. Other – including general psychology (21 items) pp 32-34
Key: R = refereed journal
I = invited contribution
C = Conference proceedings
Where there is no open-access online version (indicated in green) I have supplied an abstract
where available, or pointed to a reprint available elsewhere. Even this is not possible for quite a
few “pre-internet” publications, particularly out-of-print books, for which no paper or electronic
record is currently accessible to me. I will continue to attempt to find electronic versions.
I have included the DOI or Stable URL of each item, where it exists.
My H-index is currently 77 meaning that I have 77 publications cited 77 or more times. Those
publications are indicated in red, with the first number being the rank number (1 = most citations).
Although the cut-off is arbitrary, these 77 publications out of a total of 200 represent my most
influential publications taken over the career as a whole.
They are divided across decades as follows
1970s 5
1980s 10
1990s 27
2000s 19
2010s 7
The list does not include all shorter and more ephemeral pieces, such as newspaper articles and
comment pieces. It also does not include pieces published under the direct imprint of NGOs I
have worked for, mainly in collaboration with others in those organisations. These publications
have generally not gone through standard peer review, and they are not generally included in
citation indices. Excluded therefore are a substantial number of publications from the three
conflict-analysis organisations, Oxford Research Group, Every Casualty Worldwide, and Iraq
Body Count. Iraq Body Count maintains an exhaustive repository of all organisational
publications at https://www.iraqbodycount.org/analysis/, currently numbering 66, most of which I
have had some involvement with.

This article reports findings from an investigation of the childhoods of young
musicians which provides indications of musical talent and unusual liking for music
in the earliest years of life. Forty-two students aged 10-17 attending a highly selective
specialist music school were interviewed and encouraged to talk about significant
events and experiences in their early musical lives. The parents of half the students
were also interviewed. In 50 percent of the children there was some evidence of
spontaneous early musical activity, in the form of either singing or picking out tunes
on an instrument. However, the students who were most exceptional were no more
likely than the others to have displayed special talents at a very early age. In addition,
a number of parents reported that their child had shown an unusual degree of interest
in music while still very young. The findings have implications concerning the
possible existence of innate gifts and talents.

The study explored auditory style among 57 professional orchestra musicians and 57
matched nonmusician contro! subjects, as measured by the Keele Assessment of
Auditory Style (KAAS). The questionnaire was specifically designed to elicit
information abour developmental auditory life and orientation. Psychometric
development and underlying factorial dimensions of the scale are described. The
results demonstrate differences concerning auditory seyle between musicians and
nonmusicians. State anxiety, as measured by the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety
11
Inventory, was found to be a significant correlate and predictor of high KAAS scores
among the musicians but not among the nonmusicians. Further, auditory style was
explored as a correlate and predictor of music performance anxiety, as measured by
the Music Performance Stress Survey (MPSS) section 11, previously described as the
Performance Anxiety Questionnaire (PAQ). The findings indicate that auditory style
(KAAS) is a correlate and predictor of certain ettects of music pertormance anxiety.
More specifically, high-KAAS musicians (auditives) evidence significantly higher
levels of state anxiety, as well as avoid performances and auditions more because of
anxiety about performing, than do either mid KAAS or low KAAS musicians. Other
research findings outlining trends among this rusician subgroup are discussed. The
study has direct implications to arts medicine practitioners regarding the prioritizing
of therapeutic intervention modalities and highilghts the need to develop auditive-
specific interventions, environments, and therapeutic regimens.

The question ‘From where, and by what mechanisms, does an individual's musical
ability originate?’ is a subject of major interest both to music psychologists and
musicians, heightened by the recent research into prenatal perception of sound. This
book brings together reviews on central issues, beginning with prenatal auditory
experience, through infancy and early childhood. The chapters chart the
developmental process with reference to the child's changing environment: from the
uterus, through the intense and semi-exclusive mother–baby bond, to the wider
contexts provided by the family, school, and society at large.

While there are many perspectives and dimensions that can be adapted to explain
individual development, the researchers in this section focus on three dimensions: the
selection of sample, the selection of questions to be asked from the sample, and the
type of observations to be made from the study. For the first dimension, the
researchers chose to get samples that were performing above average in terms of
musical competency; for the second, the research focuses on uncovering factors that
propel individuals towards being musical virtuosos; finally, the research perspective
deals with the relationship between the development of musical expertise and the
external resources that may be responsible for bringing it out. Through this, the
researchers were able to define the characteristics of expert musical performance, the
conditions for development of performance skills and whether expressivity can be
learned or practiced. The chapter also documents an observation of young performing
musicians.

The spatio-termporal properties of human movement that induce the percept of a
visual beat were investigated in three experiments. Experiment 1, in which
participants synchronized key presses with point-light representations of simple
conducting gestures, showed that visual beat induction was related to acceleration
along the trajectory (a), and, to a lesser extent, high instantaneous speed (v).
Experiment 2, in which the curvature component of the gestures was held constant,
largely supported this finding. Experiment 3, in which the speed component of the
gestures was held constant, indicated that neither radius of curvature (r) nor rate of
change of radius of curvature (r') alone were related to visual beat induction. In
addition, analysis of the characteristics of the gestures highlighted inconsistencies
between descriptions of the beat in the conducting literature, and descriptions of
biological motion in the human movement literature, with the gestures used here
conforming to the latter.

This chapter reports on a pilot research and development project designed to
explore the potential of post-performance dialogues between musicians and
audiences at live events. The defining characteristic of the events studied is that
audience feedback is given in response to questions formulated by the musicians
involved, designed to provide information of genuine artistic interest and
relevance to those concerned. Audience members are, thereby, drawn into a
relationship which has elements of a focus group, or consultancy, rather than the
more common ‘ask the performer’ model of post-performance events, which
maintains the more traditional boundaries in which the performers give and the
audience gratefully receives. In the kind of event being reported here the tables
are turned: it is the audience who gives and the musicians who receive, thus
offering the opportunity of a more explicitly collaborative two-way relationship
between artist and audience.

Musical performance is an irreducibly social phenomenon, manifested through the
multiple relationships between performers and audience. In live contexts, the nature
and meaning of performance encompass the two-way interplay between performers
and audience. This chapter surveys a range of research, from the philosophical to the
empirical, into the parameters of this interplay, both during and after performances,
focusing most specifically on those aspects that have implications for the creative
practice of the musician. These aspects go beyond sound parameters to features of the
performance often seen as ‘extra-musical’, such as the visual and gestural aspects of
performance, the architecture of the performance space and perceived norms of
behaviour within the concert context. Consideration is given to how these elements
contribute to different levels of experience, from the ‘basic’ appreciation of structural
elements through to the ‘peak’ experiences which music performance sometimes
engenders. Also considered is audience feedback, both formal and informal, and how
it may have an impact on creative performance

Since the 9/11 attacks, many Western governments assume terrorism to be the
greatest threat we face. In response, their dangerous policies attempt to maintain
control and keep the status quo by using overwhelming military force. This important
book shows why this approach has been such a failure, and how it distracts us from
other, much greater, threats of climate change, competition over resources,
marginalisation of the majority of the world and global militarisation. Unless urgent,
coordinated action is taken in the next 5-10 years on all these issues it will be almost
impossible to avoid the earth becoming a highly unstable place by the middle years of
this century. Beyond Terror offers an alternative path for politicians, journalists and
concerned citizens alike
