Abstract
Debesh Roy is a unique story-writter of Bengali literature. The predecessors, the successors, or the
contemporary— he is diiferent from all. His childhood was spent in Jalpaiguri district of North
Bengal. School and college life were also spent there. He was actively associated with the
Communist Party of India from a very young age. Also he was associated with journalism. These
actions of the early age had a great influence on his mind. He mentioned the importance of journalism
in terms of accuracy in writing story or novels. He had acknowledged the knowledge of language,
history, geography towards narrative literature. Due to the combined effect of all these, he got a
unique style of telling story. Sharp intellect mind, thinking style, unbiased vision of a journalist and
direct experience gathered from the real world had enriched his writngs. His first appearance in
literature was mainly during India’s independence. The burning wounds of partition, refugee
problems, ethnic riots etc. were very evident during that time. Moreover, the recent World War-II,
post-colonialism, etc. had created dire problems such as insecurity, lack of moral values, mistrust
and spiritual crisis. The world war had stopped— but its impact was still strong. It is in this
background that the story-writter Debesh Roy arrived. Partition, caste riots ravaged middle class
crisis etc. therefore became the subject of his stories written during this period. Apart from these, he
got a connection with the Rajbanshis, the Nepalis, the Madhesians in his early days. He mastered
many things like their food habits, daily life, language etc. with sincerity. It is because of that hearty-
connection, story of these’ people came up in his writings in later life. How the land and people of
the North Bengal are being changed in the gradual evolution due to the influence of globalization,
the author has also highlighted. He also portrayed the unethicalness of the middle class people, the
terrible women abuse and the recent child-rape and murder case of Unnao. Noteworthy, absence of
traditional narrative, but individuality of speech, intensity of feeling, establishing facts, theory
building - these are the soul of his stories. This style can be found in all of his stories from the
beginning-era; from the sixties of the last century to the second decade of the twenty-first century.
In this article, some of his early-written stories, such as ‘Dupoor’, ‘Jaladhar Banerjeer Mrityu’,
