... However, species in the genus share the feature of a deeply separated segment VIII into a free tergum and sternum, which is a putative synapomorphy for Gelechiinae (Hodges 1999). Within this subfamily the genus has been placed in the tribe Gelechiini provisionally near Aroga Busck, 1914 and Athrips Billberg, 1820 (Huemer and Karsholt 1999). Hodges (1999: 15) proposed and developed the argument that Chionodes Hübner, [1825], Aroga, and Filatima "comprise a closely related, highly speciose group". ...

(Afghanistan), and F. karii sp. nov. (Tajikistan). The hitherto unknown female of Filatima multicornuta Bidzilya & Nupponen, 2018 is described. Recorded to occur for the first time are Filatima textorella (Chrétien, 1908) from North Macedonia and Turkey, F. pallipalpella (Snellen, 1884) from Kyrgyzstan, and Filatima zagulajevi Anikin & Piskunov, 1996 from Kazakhstan. Filatima fontisella Lvovsky & Piskunov, 1989 is removed from the list of Russian Gelechiidae due to re-identification of the only record as F. multicornuta . An annotated checklist of Palaearctic Filatima species is provided.
... The Gelechiidae has long been one of the most neglected and poorly known families of the Lepidoptera. During the last 40 years or so there has been a growing worldwide interest in their research resulting in important publications which considerably facilitated and stimulated the studies of regional or local faunas: e.g. the Gelechiidae fauna of Central Europe (Elsner et al. 1999), the revision of the European Gelechiinae (Huemer & Karsholt 1999, 2010, revisions of the Palaearctic Gnorimoschemini (Povolný 2002) and of a series of ...

This study of the Romanian Gelechiidae fauna deals with 317 species placed in 80 genera arranged in two different lists. The main list comprises 293 species in 78 genera currently accepted for the Romanian fauna, including 286 named and 7 other so far unidentified and probably undescribed species. 269 species (almost 92 %) were identified from examined material, the other 24 are derived from the literature. 30 species are recorded for the first time for the Romanian fauna: Aproaerema cinctelloides (Nel & Varenne, 2012), A. suecicella (Wolff, 1958), A. semicostella (Staudinger, 1871), Dactylotula kinkerella (Snellen, 1876), Bryotropha patockai Elsner & Karsholt, 2003, Aristotelia decoratella (Staudinger, 1879), Psamathocrita argentella Pierce & Metcalfe, 1942, Ptocheuusa paupella (Zeller, 1847), Metzneria diffusella Englert, 1974, Monochroa tekovella Kosorín, 2020, Athrips aquila Junnilainen, 2010, Chionodes ignorantella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1854), Gelechia senticetella (Staudinger, 1859), G. dujardini Huemer, 1991, Scrobipalpa acuta Povolný, 2001, S. selectella (Caradja, 1920), S. gallicella (Constant, 1885), S. nitentella (Fuchs, 1902), S. monochromella (Constant, 1895), S. thymelaeae (Amsel, 1939), Scrobipalpula tussilaginis (Stainton, 1867), Ephysteris deserticolella (Staudinger, 1871), Lutilabria lutilabrella (Mann, 1857), Caryocolum amaurella (Hering, 1924), C. petryi (Hofmann, 1899), C. pullatella (Tengström, 1848), C. blandulella (Tutt, 1887), Teleiopsis laetitiae Schmid, 2011, Xenolechia aethiops (Humphreys & Westwood, 1845) and Stenolechiodes pseudogemmellus Elsner, 1996. There are 6 other new additions, their records were overlooked and not included in the checklists: Apodia martinii Petry, 1911, Monochroa conspersella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1854), Ptycerata cryptoxena (Gozmány, 1952), Scrobipalpa salicorniae (Hering, 1889), Lutilabria prolata Junnilainen & Nupponen, 2010 and Agonochaetia terrestrella (Zeller, 1872). Additionally, 78 first records for the different regions of Romania are provided. The previously unknown females of Aproaerema incognitana (Gozmány, 1957) and A. semicostella (Staudinger, 1871) are described. A misinterpretation is shown in the literature concerning Bryotropha azovica Bidzilya, 1996. This species is currently known only from Ukraine (type locality) and Romania, all other records of B. azovica sensu Karsholt & Rutten, 2005 from Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Bulgaria and North Macedonia are based on misidentifications and represent a different, as yet unnamed, species. An annotation is given for all listed taxa summarizing the current knowledge: the general distribution, the first Romanian record, the regional distribution and a concise enumeration of recent collecting sites based on both material examined and literature. Detailed data are given only for the first Romanian records or those of the regions of the country, and in the case of a few rarely recorded species. The habitats and collecting methods are mentioned, but concise data referring to the biology are only exceptionally given. The 23 species for which no material could be found for examination are treated as in need of confirmation. In a second list are treated 24 species and 2 genera mentioned earlier from Romania, but currently deleted from the checklist, out of this 8 species and 1 genus are now deleted: Aproaerema larseniella (Gozmány, 1957), Helcystogramma albinervis (Gerasimov, 1929), the genus Pectinophora Busck, 1917 including P. gossypiella (Saunders, 1844), Bryotropha plebejella (Zeller, 1847), Ptycerata furfurella (Staudinger, 1871), Oxypteryx nigritella (Zeller, 1847), Chionodes nebulosella (Heinemann, 1870) and Scrobipalpa salinella (Zeller, 1847). Replacing the Gelechiidae in the latest Romanian checklist (Rákosy & Goia 2021) with this list is recommanded

The provided taxonomic list is comprised of 64 species from 44 genera and 18 families, where all species represent novel geographical records. Of them, only 62 species inhabit Southern Siberia, the other two species, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) and Carposina sasakii Matsumura are quarantine pests intercepted in this region. Eighteen genera and 3 families (Glyphipterigidae, Chimabachidae, and Oecophoridae) are reported for the first time from the studied region. Overall, 11 species from 7 families are novel for Siberia. Two species, Bucculatrix pannonica and Coleophora curictae, are newly recorded in Russia. For the species newly recorded in the fauna of Siberia and Russia, male or female genitalia are illustrated. For Coleophora curictae, representing a novel record for Russia, the bionomics is given for the first time.
... Litini (= Teleiodini), one of tribes of Gelechiinae (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is referred to a total of 8 genera in the Neotropical Region: Agnippe Chambers, Recurvaria Haworth, Coleotechnites Chambers, Schistophila Chrétien, Exoteleia Wallengren, Arogalea Walsingham, Barticeja Povolný and Telphusa Chambers (Becker 1984;Brown 2008a, 2010). Currently, the tribe was defined morphologically and treated systematically for Europe by the contribution of Huemer and Karsholt (1999), who reviewed over 60 species, ascribed in 18 genera. Later, Brown (2008a, 2008b) reviewed all Holarctic-Nearctic genera and performed a phylogenetic analysis, based on morphological characters and supported by molecular studies, and they established the monophyly of this group. ...

After DNA analysis it became clear that it was a new species for Belgium.
... Filatima angustipennis was synonymized with F. albicostella by Sattler (1968). Huemer and Karsholt (1999) reinstated F. angustipennis as a valid species based on the difference in the length and the emargination width of the vinculum as well as the shading of the color. However, the length and the emargination width of the vinculum are unreliable characters for a likely spreading species, and the shading of the color was also observed in the congeneric species, such as F. pallipalpella (Snellen, 1884) (Bidzilya and Nupponen 2018: 397) and F. yanchiensis sp. ...

While the males of all taxa included in Gelechiini and Gnorimoschemini have a culcitula (a membranous sac dorsad of the gnathos extending from the ventral surface of the anal cone) (see Figs. 4-6, Huemer and Karsholt 1999) and resolution among those genera is unknown, Litini have been characterized by a suite of characters without any presumption of character evolution or convergence. These include patches of raised scales on the forewing, a reduced gnathos, the phallus fused with the genital capsule, and the apophyses anteriores very long (Huemer and Karsholt 1999). In a recent phylogenetic analysis of Litini (=Teleiodini), Lee and Brown (2008) included all the genera subsumed by Huemer and Karsholt (1999) and previous authors (Janse 1958-1963, Becker 1984) based on the proposed set of defining characters, so did not attempt to resolve inclusion/ exclusion of gelechiine genera in the tribe in relation to other Gelechiinae. ...

InTROduzIOnE La famiglia Gelechiidae stainton, 1854 in Eu-ropa comprende 865 specie. Comprehensive genetic surveys of Lepidoptera are still largely lacking across most of the eastern Mediterranean. Consequently, there is a lack of modern, taxonomically validated checklists that meet current scientific standards. In this study, we analyze the butterfly and moth fauna of Crete (Greece) for the first time, based on 3110 DNA barcode sequences, primarily obtained from specimens based on our own sampling program. Building on these data, and incorporating previously published records from print sources and online forums, we establish the first comprehensive checklist of the island’s fauna. In total, the occurrence of 1230 species from 62 families is confirmed, with 724 of them genetically verified. Among them, 75 species appear to be island endemics. The checklist includes 125 newly recorded species for Crete, validated by DNA barcoding (with 36 also being new for Greece), along with 23 species confirmed solely through morphological study, and another 16 only documented by photographs. Conversely, 212 previously reported species had to be removed as likely invalid. Furthermore, 112 unidentified sequence clusters (BINs—Barcode Index Numbers) were documented, taxonomic uncertainties that will require future integrative resolution.

The genus Palumbina Rondani, 1876 belongs to the family Gelechiidae, which was until recently believed to comprise 26 species worldwide and mainly occurring in the Oriental region. Previously, only P.pylartis (Meyrick, 1908) had been recorded from this genus in Japan. In this study, five other species were identified. Four species were recorded for the first time in Japan, and another was newly described: P.acerosa Lee & Li, 2018; P.grandiunca Lee & Li, 2018; P.macrodelta (Meyrick, 1918), P.operaria (Meyrick, 1918) and P.muraseae Kyaw & Yagi, sp. nov. The host plant and larval feeding habits of P.pylartis, P.acerosa, P.grandiunca, and P.muraseae Kyaw & Yagi, sp. nov. were revealed. The immature stages of P.grandiunca, P.pylartis, and P.muraseae Kyaw & Yagi, sp. nov., including larval and pupal morphology, were first documented for the genus in which the larval chaetotaxy of P.pylartis and P.grandiunca is well observed. In their larval chaetotaxy, the details of their interspecific variation in the relative position and length of some setae are described. The pupal morphology of the species examined in this study is almost identical to the genus Thiotricha except for different traits on the abdominal segments A7 and A10. The traits of larval chaetotaxy and pupal morphology are also discussed for the subfamily. Photographs of the adult, male and female genitalia, and information on their biology and immature stages are provided.

This study reports 30 species of Lepidoptera previously known from either the Palearctic or the Nearctic that are newly recorded as Holarctic. For 28 of these species, their intercontinental distributions were initially detected through DNA barcode analysis and subsequently confirmed by morphological examination; two Palearctic species were first detected in North America through morphology and then barcoded. When possible, the origin and status of each species (introduced, overlooked Holarctic species, or unknowingly re-described) is discussed, and its morphology is diagnosed and illustrated. The species involved include Tineidae: Scardia amurensis Zagulajev, Triaxomera parasitella (Hübner), Nemapogon cloacella (Haworth), Elatobia montelliella (Schantz), Tinea svenssoni Opheim; Gracillariidae: Caloptilia suberinella (Tengström), Parornix betulae (Stainton); Phyllonorycter maestingella (Müller); Yponomeutidae: Paraswammerdamia albicapitella (Scharfenberg), P. conspersella (Tengström); Plutellidae: Plutella hyperboreella Strand; Lyonetiidae: Lyonetia pulverulentella Zeller; Autostichidae: Oegoconia deauratella (Herrich-Schäffer), O. novimundi (Busck); Blastobasidae: Blastobasis glandulella (Riley), B. maroccanella (Amsel), B. tarda Meyrick; Depressariidae: Agonopterix conterminella (Zeller), Depressaria depressana (F.); Coleophoridae: Coleophora atriplicis Meyrick, C. glitzella Hofmann, C. granulatella Zeller, C. texanella Chambers, C. vitisella Gregson ; Scythrididae: Scythris sinensis (Felder & Rogenhofer); Gelechiidae: Altenia perspersella (Wocke), Gnorimoschema jalavai Povolný, Scrobipalpa acuminatella (Sircom), Sophronia gelidella Nordman; Choreutidae: Anthophila fabriciana (L.); and Tortricidae: Phiaris bipunctana (F.). These cases of previously unrecognized faunal overlap have led to their redescription in several instances. Five new synonyms are proposed: Blastobasis glandulella (Riley, 1871) = B. huemeri Sinev, 1993, syn. nov.; B. tarda Meyrick, 1902 =Neoblastobasis ligurica Nel & Varenne, 2004, syn. nov.; Coleophora atriplicis Meyrick, 1928 = C. cervinella McDunnough, 1946, syn. nov.; C. texanella Chambers, 1878 = C. coxi Baldizzone & van der Wolf, 2007, syn. nov., and = C. vagans Walsingham, 1907, syn. nov. Lectotypes are designated for Blastobasis tarda Meyrick and Coleophora texanella Chambers. Type specimens were examined where pertinent to establish new synonymies. We identify 12 previously overlooked cases of species introductions, highlighting the power of DNA barcoding as a tool for biosurveillance.

For the first time, a nearly complete barcode library for European Gelechiidae is provided. DNA barcode sequences (COI gene-cytochrome c oxidase 1) from 751 out of 865 nominal species, belonging to 105 genera, were successfully recovered. A total of 741 species represented by specimens with sequences ≥ 500bp and an additional ten species represented by specimens with shorter sequences were used to produce 53 NJ trees. Intraspecific barcode divergence averaged only 0.54% whereas distance to the Nearest Neighbour species averaged 5.58%. Of these, 710 species possessed unique DNA barcodes, but 31 species could not be reliably discriminated because of barcode sharing or partial barcode overlap. Species A peer-reviewed open-access journal Peter Huemer et al. / ZooKeys 921: 141-157 (2020) 142 discrimination based on the Barcode Index System (BIN) was successful for 668 out of 723 species which clustered from minimum one to maximum 22 unique BINs. Fifty-five species shared a BIN with up to four species and identification from DNA barcode data is uncertain. Finally, 65 clusters with a unique BIN remained unidentified to species level. These putative taxa, as well as 114 nominal species with more than one BIN, suggest the presence of considerable cryptic diversity, cases which should be examined in future revisionary studies.

The taxonomy of the Palearctic genus Megacraspedus Zeller, 1839 (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) is revised, based on external morphology, genitalia and DNA barcodes. An integrative taxonomic approach supports the existence of 85 species which are arranged in 24 species groups (disputed taxa from other faunal regions are discussed). Morphology of all species is described and figured in detail. For 35 species both sexes are described; for 46 species only the male sex is reported, in one species the male is unknown, whereas in three species the female adult and/or genitalia morphology could not be analysed due to lack of material. DNA barcode sequences of the COI barcode fragment with > 500 bp were obtained from 264 specimens representing 62 species or about three-quarters of the species. Species delimitation is particularly difficult in a few widely distributed species with high and allegedly intraspecific DNA barcode divergence of nearly 14%, and with up to 23 BINs in a single species. Deep intraspecific or geographical splits in DNA barcode are frequently not supported by morphology, thus indicating a complex phylogeographic history or other unresolved molecular problems. The following 44 new species (22 of them from Europe) are described: Megacraspedusbengtssonisp. n. (Spain), M.junnilainenisp. n. (Turkey), M.similellussp. n. Noteworthy records of 23 species of the family Gelechiidae from southern Siberia are reported. The following seven new species are described: Metzneria transbaikalica Bidzilya, sp. nov., Istrianis jaskai Bidzilya, sp. nov., Teleiopsis kyraensis Bidzilya, sp. nov., Athrips nigrilineella Bidzilya & K. Nupponen, sp. nov., Filatima multicornuta Bidzilya & K. Nupponen, sp. nov., Lutilabria pallidella K. Nupponen & Bidzilya sp. nov. and Caryocolum unicolorellum Bidzilya, sp. nov. Two new synonyms are established: Filatima bidentella Bidzilya, 1998 syn. nov. of Filatima asiatica Sattler, 1961; Filatima autocrossa Meyrick, 1937 syn. nov. of Filatima pallipalpella Snellen, 1884. Lutilabria kaszabi Povolný, 1978 is re-described based on additional material. The hitherto unknown females of Filatima asiatica, F. karsholti Ivinskis & Piskunov, 1989, F. sciocrypta (Meyrick, 1936) and Athrips kerzhneri Piskunov, 1990 are described. Dirhinosia interposita Bidzilya & Budashkin, 2015, Scrobipalpa flavinerva Bidzilya & Li, 2010, Scrobipalpa sinica Bidzilya & Li, 2010 and Filatima karsholti are recorded from Russia for the first time. Nine species are recorded for the first time from different regions of Siberia. Female brachyptery in Filatima Busck, 1939 and Lutilabria Povolný, 1965 is reported for the first time.

This paper provides a list of 125 species from 22 families of Microlepidoptera collected in the south of Krasnoyarsk Territory and in the Republic ofKhakassia, with 63 species (50%) and 2 families (Bucculatricidae and Elachistidae) recorded in the region for the first time, and 11 species from 6 families being new to Siberia: Cauchas fibulella, Nemophora fasciella, N. minimella (Adelidae), Phyllonorycter sorbicola, Phyllocnistis extrematrix (Gracillariidae), Cosmiotes freyerella, Elachista subocellea (Elachistidae), Caryocolum alsinella, Scrobipalpula diffluella (Gelechiidae), Agonopterix intersecta (Depressariidae), and Ypsolopha horridella (Ypsolophidae). Three species are new to science: Phyllonorycter sp. and Phyllocnistis verae (Gracillariidae) from the suburbs of Krasnoyarsk and Chrysoesthia sp. (Gelechiidae) from the Republic of Khakassia. Almost half of the faunistic findings belong to two families, Gelechiidae (34 species) and Gracillariidae (24 species). In the former family, the number of species distributed in Krasnoyarsk Territory and/or Khakassia was increased by 1.5 times based on our collection. Trophic specialization remains unknown only for 7 of the 125 species. Most (90%) of the remaining 118 species are phytophagous, the others are saprophagous; 53 species are known as leaf miners. Phytophagous species feed on plants of 36 families and 21 orders. The largest number of microlepidopteran species inhabit plants of the orders Rosales and Fagales (25 and 24 species, respectively). Twelve species are known as pests: Tineidae (4 species), Gracillariidae, Gelechiidae (2 species in each), Argyresthiidae, Choreutidae, Lyonetiidae, and Plutellidae (one species in each). Four pest species have expanded beyond the Palaearctic in the last century: Choreutis pariana (Choreutidae), Scrobipalpa atriplicella (Gelechiidae), Plutella xylostella (Plutellidae), and Niditinea fuscella (Tineidae).

The Holarctic genus Agonochaetia is reviewed and a new species, Agonochaetia shawinigan Landry, sp. nov. is described from Québec, Canada. In addition, a new glandiductor-bearing genus and species, Canarischema fuerteventura Karsholt, gen. nov., sp. nov. is described from the Canary Islands. Comparative diagnoses, a key to species, illustrations of external aspect, male and female genitalia are provided for all species. Most species of Agonochaetia are rarely collected and known only from their types or from very few specimens. DNA barcodes are provided for four of the species from which DNA was recovered. Analysis of DNA barcodes suggests that Agonochaetia may be paraphyletic. Phylogenetic relationships to other Gnorimoschemini genera bearing a pair of glandiductors above the phallus are discussed.
