ChatGPT: Empowering lifelong learning in the digital age of higher education

Abstract and Figures

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have the potential to completely transform how we teach and learn in higher education. ChatGPT, a language model developed by OpenAI, is one such tool that can deliver individualized recommendations to students, increase collaboration and communication, and improve student learning results. However, there are some obstacles to overcome, such as ethical concerns and implementation issues. This study reviews related work on the use of artificial intelligence in education, with a focus on ChatGPT and its possible applications in higher education. It also examines the benefits and drawbacks of adopting ChatGPT in higher education, as well as implementation advice. Finally, the report discusses future directions for ChatGPT research in higher education. According to the findings of this paper, ChatGPT represents a significant opportunity for higher education institutions to improve the quality and accessibility of education; however, its implementation must be approached with caution and a clear understanding of the opportunities and challenges involved.

Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have the potential to completely transform
how we teach and learn in higher education. ChatGPT, a language model devel-
oped by OpenAI, is one such tool that can deliver individualized recommendations
to students, increase collaboration and communication, and improve student learn-
ing results. However, there are some obstacles to overcome, such as ethical concerns
and implementation issues. This study reviews related work on the use of artificial
intelligence in education, with a focus on ChatGPT and its possible applications in
higher education. It also examines the benefits and drawbacks of adopting ChatGPT
in higher education, as well as implementation advice. Finally, the report discusses
future directions for ChatGPT research in higher education. According to the findings
of this paper, ChatGPT represents a significant opportunity for higher education insti-
tutions to improve the quality and accessibility of education; however, its implementa-
tion must be approached with caution and a clear understanding of the opportunities
and challenges involved.

1 Introduction
The use of technology in education over the last ten years has changed several
aspects of learning. By making educational resources more easily accessible and
extending the reach of higher education outside of typical classroom settings, it has
created new opportunities for both instructors and students (Celik,2023). One such
innovation that has the potential to profoundly alter education, and more specifically
higher education, is ChatGPT.
Fundamentally, ChatGPT is an AI language model that can provide conversa-
tions and answers to complex queries that are akin to those of a person. As it can

With the increasing integration of ChatGPT into higher education, understanding faculty members' acceptance intentions toward this technology has become a critical area of inquiry. Grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), this study analyzed survey data from 264 Chinese university faculty members using structural equation modeling to explore their acceptance intentions regarding ChatGPT for teaching and research. The findings revealed three key insights: (1) Faculty members demonstrated a “high willingness to use - cautious attitude” pattern, indicating a rational balance between the perceived value of the technology and its ethical risks. (2) Training support was identified as a crucial mediating factor influencing faculty members' acceptance intentions. (3) To foster the responsible use of ChatGPT in higher education, the study recommends the development of pedagogy-oriented AI support systems tailored to faculty needs. By expanding the application of TAM theory to educational contexts, this study provides valuable theoretical and practical guidance for the responsible and effective adoption of ChatGPT in higher education.

Prior studies have mostly studied artificial intelligence AI education from students’ perspectives from various majors. However, it is necessary to understand physical education students’ perception and their attitudes towards AI because they are essential personnel for physical education. To fill the gap in literature, the aim of this study is to determine physical education students’ attitudes and to analyze the perceived usefulness of AI. The study also investigated the differences in students’ attitudes and their perceived usefulness level regarding AI technology. A descriptive research design was used in this study, with a questionnaire to collect data from the study participants. The number of participants was 210 physical education students. The findings revealed that the participants expressed low to moderate positive attitudes towards using AI in their learning. Additionally, students had a moderate level of perceived usefulness of using AI. In addition, student attitudes and their perceived usefulness level regarding AI technology did not differ significantly based on gender, students age and their experiences. These findings provide valuable insight for academicians by filling a knowledge gap in the existing literature and demonstrating the concrete use of AI technology in the realm of physical education. Recommendations are enumerated based on the obtained findings.

The integration of AI-based advisory systems in higher education has transformed student advising by improving accessibility, efficiency, and accuracy. This study evaluates a GPT-based robo-advisory system designed to assist students with academic enquiries, administrative processes, and career advice. The system was trained on 29 module handbooks, general rules, and FAQs to ensure institution-specific accuracy. A test of 100 sample queries across different categories demonstrated 100% overall accuracy, reinforcing its reliability in providing correct and contextually relevant answers. Compared to traditional chatbots, the system excelled at interpreting complex queries, providing detailed academic insights, and streamlining university processes. In line with existing literature, the findings confirm that AI-driven advising improves student engagement and administrative efficiency, complementing previous research on chatbots in education. However, challenges remain, including the integration of predictive analytics, multilingual support, and ethical considerations, particularly when dealing with sensitive student issues. While the model successfully automates academic advising, it does not replace human advisors in cases that require emotional intelligence and ethical judgement. Addressing biases in AI-generated responses through refined training data and improving computational efficiency with scalable processing strategies are crucial for ensuring fairness and widespread implementation. Future developments should focus on hybrid models that combine AI-driven insights with human expertise to optimise student support. This study contributes to ongoing discussions about AI in higher education and advocates for adaptive, data-driven, and ethically responsible student advising systems.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has significantly reshaped global industries, yet rural communities continue to face critical gaps in access, education, and connectivity. This study explores the disparities in technology adoption, particularly in higher education, where artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging digital tools are transforming learning environments. Through an analysis of recent trends, challenges, and policy implications, this research highlights the barriers that rural populations encounter, including limited broadband access, slower AI adoption, and the need for targeted educational strategies. The findings emphasize the importance of inclusive technological integration and strategic policy reforms to bridge the digital divide. Empowering rural communities, and underserved populations with digital literacy may vastly improve education and employment opportunities for these individuals and families. This can, in turn, improve the economic output within each community, fill workforce gaps and provide an improved trajectory of prospects to society. By fostering equitable access to emerging technologies, institutions can better prepare students from rural backgrounds to participate fully in the evolving digital economy.

This systematic literature review explores the use of generative artificial intelligence tools in English academic writing by English as a foreign language and English as a second language students and university faculty in higher education. By analyzing 46 articles from 2019–2023, the review examines the purposes and functions of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, their role in addressing writing challenges, and educators' strategies for ethical integration. Automated writing evaluation systems, such as Grammarly, Criterion, Quillbot, and ChatGPT, primarily enhance linguistic accuracy, vocabulary sophistication, and select higher-order writing skills. These tools also support learner confidence and reduce writing anxiety, though engagement with feedback varies. Educators employ diverse strategies, including blended feedback and task-specific AI use. The review identifies substantial improvements in grammar, mechanics, and essay structure but notes limited effects on advanced critical thinking. It underscores the need for balanced pedagogical practices that foster independent writing skills and recommends further research on adaptive AI technologies and innovative instructional approaches.

The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technology has triggered extensive discussions about its potential applications in sustainable higher education. Based on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and task–technology fit (TTF) theory, this research aimed to investigate the current situations and challenges of Chinese university students using GenAI in four typical task scenarios. This was performed using a cross-sectional research design. The data were collected via questionnaire, with 486 undergraduates from a Chinese university participating. The data analysis methods include descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and content analysis. The results show that more than 70% of university students actively use GenAI, but nearly half of them are not very proficient in its use. Doubao and ERNIE Bot are the GenAI tools they prefer most. The primary functions they use are text production and information retrieval. They mainly learn the relevant knowledge and skills through self-media and knowledge-sharing platforms. Among the four typical task scenarios, GenAI is widely used in course learning and research activities, while its application in daily life and job search is relatively limited. The analysis of demographic variables shows that grade and major have a significant impact on university students’ use of GenAI. In addition, university students suggest that universities should offer relevant courses or lectures and provide comprehensive technical support to improve the popularity and operability of GenAI. This study provides suggestions for universities, education administration departments, and technology development departments to improve GenAI services. It will help universities optimize the allocation of educational resources and promote educational equity for sustainability.

This study focuses on the intention of Chinese college students to use Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC), aiming to explore the influencing factors and their mechanisms of action and to provide theoretical and practical guidance for the application of AIGC in higher education. Based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model, diffusion of innovations theory, and perceived risk theory, an analytical framework is constructed. A questionnaire survey was conducted, collecting 415 valid samples, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was used for empirical analysis. The study found that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, satisfaction, and relative advantage positively affect the intention to use; relative advantage and satisfaction act as mediators between multiple factors and the intention to use, with the mediating effect of relative advantage being more pronounced; chain mediation effect analysis shows that facilitating conditions play a stronger mediating role in enhancing the intention to use AIGC; perceived risk negatively moderates the relationship between relative advantage and the intention to use. The results of the study provide recommendations for higher education institutions and technology developers.

The paper examines the characteristics of Chat GPT and how they can be leveraged to provide debugging assistance, bug prediction, and bug explanation to help solve programming problems. The paper also explores the limitations of Chat GPT in solving programming bugs and the importance of using other debugging tools and techniques to validate its predictions and explanations. The paper concludes by highlighting the potential of Chat GPT as one part of a comprehensive debugging toolkit, and the benefits of combining its strengths with the strengths of other debugging tools to identify and fix bugs more effectively.

We discuss the wonderful accomplishment that ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer), a chatbot launched by OpenAI in November 2022, is. We connect this milestone to previous research, which suggests that language is but the first step towards creating Artificial Intelligence (AI). We list several steps to help all of us, with specific pointers related to ChatGPT, get to the next level in creating Artificial Intelligence. We point out that OpenAI may not be as open as it sounds. As closed as OpenAI might be, their creation ChatGPT is undoubtedly an inspiration bound to evoke feelings of true love at first chat. We highlight the principal requirement for all intelligent systems, including ChatGPT, which is the inclusion of the principle of inclusion. We suggest subject classification codes and headings, which are to be included in various disciplines as artificial as they are, aimed at incorporating the principle of inclusion and the creation of “The Universal Identity”. We look at several crucial pedagogical possibilities, both for ChatGPT and the rest of us. We have a discussion of the many concerns people have, about improvements in AI making jobs redundant, and why there might be a positive side to it. We mathematically prove that taking the first step equals making infinite progress, in this quest for AI and everything else. We discuss computer code generation by computers and why computers are more naturally suited for writing computer programs. We describe reasons why the Turing Test is irrelevant in gauging intelligence. It is very likely that our pursuit of AI might be misleading. Intelligence could be an unintended consequence of curiosity left to roam free, best exemplified by a frolicking infant. This suggests that our attempts at AI could have been misguided. What we actually need to strive for can be termed artificial curiosity (AC) and intelligence happens as a consequence of those efforts. We conclude with a conundrum, which should not really be that much of a challenge since it is a no brainer that needs no intelligence, as to what it is that we really want: Artificial Intelligence or Real Consciousness. And once we start to search for real consciousness, another unintended yet welcome consequence might be that, we will find pure happiness. There is nothing artificial about the path to absolute happiness, it is very authentic and well within reach.

The release of ChatGPT has sparked significant academic integrity concerns in higher education. However, some commentators have pointed out that generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT can enhance student learning, and consequently, academics should adapt their teaching and assessment practices to embrace the new reality of living, working, and studying in a world where AI is freely available. Despite this important debate, there has been very little academic literature published on ChatGPT and other generative AI tools. This article uses content analysis to examine news articles (N=100) about how ChatGPT is disrupting higher education, concentrating specifically on Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom. It explores several key themes, including university responses, academic integrity concerns, the limitations and weaknesses of AI tool outputs, and opportunities for student learning. The data reveals mixed public discussion and university responses, with a focus mainly on academic integrity concerns and opportunities for innovative assessment design. There has also been a lack of public discussion about the potential for ChatGPT to enhance participation and success for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Similarly, the student voice is poorly represented in media articles to date. This article considers these trends and the impact of AI tools on student learning at university.

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI)-based conversational large language model (LLM). The potential applications of LLMs in health care education, research, and practice could be promising if the associated valid concerns are proactively examined and addressed. The current systematic review aimed to investigate the utility of ChatGPT in health care education, research, and practice and to highlight its potential limitations. Using the PRIMSA guidelines, a systematic search was conducted to retrieve English records in PubMed/MEDLINE and Google Scholar (published research or preprints) that examined ChatGPT in the context of health care education, research, or practice. A total of 60 records were eligible for inclusion. Benefits of ChatGPT were cited in 51/60 (85.0%) records and included: (1) improved scientific writing and enhancing research equity and versatility; (2) utility in health care research (efficient analysis of datasets, code generation, literature reviews, saving time to focus on experimental design, and drug discovery and development); (3) benefits in health care practice (streamlining the workflow, cost saving, documentation, personalized medicine, and improved health literacy); and (4) benefits in health care education including improved personalized learning and the focus on critical thinking and problem-based learning. Concerns regarding ChatGPT use were stated in 58/60 (96.7%) records including ethical, copyright, transparency, and legal issues, the risk of bias, plagiarism, lack of originality, inaccurate content with risk of hallucination, limited knowledge, incorrect citations, cybersecurity issues, and risk of infodemics. The promising applications of ChatGPT can induce paradigm shifts in health care education, research, and practice. However, the embrace of this AI chatbot should be conducted with extreme caution considering its potential limitations. As it currently stands, ChatGPT does not qualify to be listed as an author in scientific articles unless the ICMJE/COPE guidelines are revised or amended. An initiative involving all stakeholders in health care education, research, and practice is urgently needed. This will help to set a code of ethics to guide the responsible use of ChatGPT among other LLMs in health care and academia.

Since the launch of ChatGPT for public use, educators have expressed a variety of concerns about its integration into educational settings. This paper has been written to provide an in-depth examination of these issues and explore the potential use of ChatGPT in educational contexts. Specifically, it aims to (i) present an argument in favor of incorporating ChatGPT into education and (ii) provide educators with a set of strategies and techniques to ensure responsible and successful implementation of ChatGPT in teaching or research. By doing so, this paper aims to promote a more informed discussion around the use of ChatGPT in education.

Open Artificial Intelligence (AI) published an AI chatbot tool called ChatGPT at the end of November 2022. Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) architecture is the foundation of ChatGPT. On the internet, ChatGPT has been rapidly growing. This chatbot enables users to discuss with the AI by inputting prompts, and it is based on OpenAI’s language model. Although ChatGPT is fantastic and produces exciting results for writing tales, poetry, songs, essays, and other things, it has certain restrictions. Users may ask the bot questions, and it will reply with pertinent, convincing subjects and replies. ChatGPT has now risen to the top of several academic agendas. Administrators create task teams and hold institution-wide meetings to react to the tools, with most of the advice being to adopt this technology. This paper briefs about the ChatGPT and its need. Further, various Progressive Work Flow Processes of the ChatGPT Tool are stated diagrammatically. Specific features and capabilities of the ChatGPT Support System are studied in this paper. Finally, we identified and discussed the significant roles of ChatGPT in the current scenario. The neural language models that form the foundation of character AI have been developed from the bottom up with talks in mind. This technology implies that the programme uses deep learning methods to analyse and produce text. The model “understands” the subtleties of human-produced natural language using vast amounts of data from the internet.

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are used in many dimensions of our lives, including education. Motivated by the increasing use of AI technologies and the current state of the art, this study examines research on AI from the perspective of online distance education. Following a systematic review protocol and using data mining and analytics approaches, the study examines a total of 276 publications. Accordingly, time trend analysis increases steadily with a peak in recent years, and China, India, and the United States are the leading countries in research on AI in online learning and distance education. Computer science and engineering are the research areas that make the most of the contribution, followed by social sciences. t-SNE analysis reveals three dominant clusters showing thematic tendencies, which are as follows: (1) how AI technologies are used in online teaching and learning processes, (2) how algorithms are used for the recognition, identification, and prediction of students’ behaviors, and (3) adaptive and personalized learning empowered through artificial intelligence technologies. Additionally, the text mining and social network analysis identified three broad research themes, which are (1) educational data mining, learning analytics, and artificial intelligence for adaptive and personalized learning; (2) algorithmic online educational spaces, ethics, and human agency; and (3) online learning through detection, identification, recognition, and prediction.

Significant changes have been brought about in society, the economy, and the environment as a result of the quick development of technology and the interconnection of the world. Artificial intelligence has advanced significantly in recent years, which has sparked the creation of groundbreaking technologies like Open AI's ChatGPT. Modern technology like the ChatGPT language model has the potential to revolutionize the educational landscape. This article's goals are to present a thorough analysis of the responsible and ethical usage of ChatGPT in education, as well as to encourage further study and debate on this important subject. The study found that the use of ChatGPT in education requires respect for privacy, fairness and non-discrimination, transparency in the use of ChatGPT, and a few other factors that were included in the paper. To sustain ethics and accountability in the global education sector, it is advised in this study that all these recommendations be carried out.

The affordances of artificial intelligence (AI) have not been totally utilized in education. To effectively integrate AI into education, teachers’ AI-specific technological and pedagogical knowledge is important. Furthermore, due to novel ethical issues caused by Al, teachers also must have the knowledge to assess AI-based decisions. None of the previous studies so far explored teacher knowledge to pedagogically and ethically use AI-based tools. Considering this gap, we first developed a scale to measure the knowledge for instructional AI use based on the technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) framework. We extended TPACK with ethical aspects. Secondly, we built a model to investigate the interplay of TPACK components and ethics. The results indicated that as long as teachers have more knowledge to interact with AI-based tools, they will have a better understanding of the pedagogical contributions of AI. Further, technological knowledge (TK) allows teachers to better assess decisions of AI. However, only TK is not sufficient educational integration of AI-based tools. For teachers to deploy AI in education efficiently, TK is meaningful when it is combined with pedagogical knowledge (PK), reflected in technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK). Given pedagogical and technological affordances of AI-based tools, the current study suggests the Intelligent-TPACK framework.
