Abstract

In Colombia, some educators coexist with varying and pervasive forms of violence, which in turn influence their teacher subjectivities. This pilot study discusses a) what it means to be a teacher and to teach amid violence in Colombia and b) conversation as a research method to explore such an issue. The conversations sustained with the teachers who participated in this study allowed for exploring the definition of docentes, the social perception of teaching, docentes and community involvement, and docentes and violence. Finally, I conclude that conversing and reflecting as teachers can help explore teachers’ subjective experiences with contextual violence. In exploring that, we can contribute to developing trauma-sensitive pedagogies for teacher education.

... 76 This also has profound impacts on teachers; research suggested to take into account the contextual description of violence teachers have experienced and to develop trauma-informed pedagogies for teacher education. 77 Related challenges include teacher burnout and shortages, as well as access to social support systems for front-line professionals. 78 In countries such as the United States, both rural white students and racial and ethnic minorities are often relegated to underfunded and under-resourced schools. ...

This article brings together expert assessments concerning the relationship between children and online extremism, to help inform scholars and policymakers seeking to address the effects of early childhood exposure to extremism content. Our approach comprised of eight semi-structured interviews involving experts, practitioners, and policymakers offering their professional assessments on the relationship between children and online extremist content. Findings include the role of online misogyny and its psychological appeal to children and adolescents in digital media environments, especially when viewed alongside or expressed in politically benign online spaces in the children’s lifestyle or development. Results emphasised the evolving sociotechnical contexts where children are being exposed to extremist content, chiefly the rapid development in online gaming communities and allied innovation in gaming industries. The experts interviewed see interdisciplinary collaboration with health, cognitive-psychological, and neuro-developmental sciences specific to child development and psychology as essential for understanding the effects of online extremist content on children in future studies. Their recommendations centred on prioritising digital media literacy in schools, promoting community engagement and parental discussions about child safety online, incentivising companies responsible for products used by children to implement age verification and advanced moderation policies, and supporting localised culture figures in the children’s lifestyle and development alongside social workers and childhood educators. Findings also suggest that current school systems and curricula lack comprehensive prevention or counter-measures against growing radicalisation in child settings. Participants offered ideas on addressing children’s exposure to online extremist content, yet gaps remain in implementing effective strategies within educational settings and beyond.

This article`s aim is to review the importance of subjectivity in Latin America and the Caribbean, as to have a brief explanation of its configuration, and integration in self context. Paradigms from European thinkers have showed relations between the subject and the symbolic forms. Michel Foucault and Félix Guattari present certain subjectivity aspects to explain what the subject values and captures from what is learned. In contrast some perspectives by Édouard Glissant and Ernst Cassirer authors linked to symbolic hermeneutics: This is in order to question the needs in the creation of the imaginary, with respect to socio-cultural and symbolic aspects. By presenting the critics and diagnoses of these authors and their significant conceptions of thought in respect to subjectivity and the imaginary, some relations are established between America and Europe. Some new perspectives are suggested as a way to contribute to the research methodologies.

Hate crimes against dissident groups are on the rise in Turkey, and political hate speech might have a triggering effect on this trend. In this study, the relationship between political hate speech against the Gulen Movement and the hate crimes perpetrated by ordinary people was examined through semi-structured interviews and surveys with victims. The findings suggest that a rise in political hate rhetoric targeting a given group might result in a corresponding rise in hate crimes committed against them, the effects of which have been largely overlooked in the current literature in the evolving Turkish context.

This paper explores the dynamics of repression and resistance within the Colombian education system through exploring human rights violations against educators. Drawing on the findings of several fieldwork visits carried out since 2005 across Colombia, the paper focuses on the darker side of the education/conflict relationship, demonstrating through a series of cases the complex way education systems and education actors get caught up in the Colombian civil war and the national and transnational catalysts for the human rights violations that occur. In doing so, the paper also argues for a more interdisciplinary and critical approach to education and conflict that recognises the transnational drivers of conflicts in education and beyond.

Does hate speech – rhetoric that targets, vilifies or is intended to intimidate minorities and other groups in society – fuel domestic terrorism? This question is, unfortunately, relevant given the convergence of the use of hate speech by political figures and domestic terrorist incidents in a variety of countries, including the United States. In this study I theorize that hate speech by politicians deepens political polarization and that this, in turn, produces conditions under which domestic terrorism increases. I test this proposition using terrorism and hate speech data for 135 to 163 countries for the period 2000 to 2017. I produce two findings. First, hate speech by political figures boosts domestic terrorism. Second, the impact of political hate speech on domestic terrorism is mediated through increased political polarization.

Based on the experience of field research in oral history, this article describes the oral history interview as an exchange of gazes and a cocreated narrative between subjects-the interviewer and the interviewee-who are both observer and observed and speak to each other across the line of their significant otherness. The interviewee is both a tool for historical research and the opening of a narrative space for the subjectivity of the interviewee, which becomes in turn a significant historical fact. © The Author(s) 2018.
