INTRODUCTION
Furniture is one of the essential medical supplies for the
hospital. It includes trolleys, side screens, hospital beds, chairs
and tables. Medical furniture and modern medical devices have
an essential role in health care. They help clinicians perform
the procedures with utmost safety of the subject and make
patients feel comfortable during and after treatment.
It is also important to understand that a wide variety of
dierent hospital furniture is used during medical examination
of the patients enabling medical sta to diagnose properly.
Also, ICU hospital furniture aids in the safety of critically ill
patients. Thus, clinical furniture has many applications and
functions in any medical facility.
Hospital furniture is an important part of any healthcare
system. Its design and functionality can make or break the
quality of care patients receive while hospitalized. Dierent
types of furniture are necessary to provide a comfortable
and safe environment for patients and sta, from beds and
stretchers to medical carts and chairs. Furniture must be

Various categories of medical beds include Coronary Care
beds. They have additional features like side rails, highly soft
mattresses etc for complex treatments.
Adjustable beds
These beds help relieve patients’ back pain or swelling of the
legs. By using this, the patients get more comfort and faster
recovery in several chronic medical issues.2
Plain beds
Used in the general wards of the hospitals, they are the most
commonly used ones. They can be operated manually by sta
and can also be used for personal care services at home.
Hospital Tables
When patients are conned to a highly specialized clinical
procedure, they can be very helpful during treatments like
surgery, like operation tables. Medical supply companies
provide them with essential parameters like safety and
functionality. They come in dierent sizes, designs, colors,
adjustable folding, and comfortable, easy operating features.
Hospital Trolleys
In case of any medical emergency, the hospital sta must carry

Importance of using Modern Furniture
Modern furniture plays an essential role in hospitals. It can be
a good way of interacting with patients as they enter it. It can
also provide them a place to relax. It can inuence a patient’s
feelings, both positively and negatively. Furniture is an integral
part of any medical infrastructure; it also enhances good
interaction between the patient and sta, or provides clinicians
to complete the task properly and optimally. Hospitals should
emphasize on patients’ and visitors’ comfort.
In the outpatient department, hospital furniture is often
selected based on longevity and area considerations; patients
and their families feel relaxed and comfortable to reect,
leading to decreased patient stress and a negative mindset.
Hospitals are the support center of human well-being, and the
patients spend most of their time on beds, which amounts to a
high percentage of their time on hospital stay.
As the quality parameters are mandatory i n medical sectors,
furniture creates a peaceful and comfortable environment that
contributes to the healing process. The furniture quality from
dierent medical supply companies diers, and one should
choose wisely. Furniture, important for a well-established
medical center includes: medical cupboards used for storing
general instruments, bassinet, bathtub, cradles, crib and
shower gurneys, bedside tables, lockers, cabinets, lift chair
and wheelchair.4
Maintenance and Cleaning of Medical Furniture
Furniture can be maintained and cleaned in the following
ways: When moving cabinets from one area to another, they
should be lifted o the ground. Avoid damaging the legs.
Clinical furniture such as soft beds should be located in a dry
place, to prevent a negative eect on the elasticity. The oor
where furniture is placed must be at, and the four legs must
be properly grounded. It should be located in a good ventilated
are a , not close to r e source s , and not expos e d to the su n, wh ich
can damage it. In medical centers, frequent sunlight can easily
oxidize and deteriorate most of the hospital furniture’s metal
coatings. Dust should be gently swept away with a soft duster.
Try not to scrub with liquids. It must be wiped gently with a
damp soft cloth. Do not scrub with alkaline water, so as not to
negatively impact it.5 The brightness of the paint may cause
the surface paint to shed o.
When cleaning and maintaining healthcare furniture, one
must rst ensure that the cloth used is properly cleaned. After
wiping o the dust with one cloth, one must make sure to turn
it over or replace it with another clean cloth before using it.
One should not be lazy and should avoid using the dirty side
over and over again repeatedly. The reason is that using the
dirty side of the cloth repeatedly will promote the dirt to shed
o on the surface of the medical furniture repeatedly, thereby
aecting the shiny surface of the fur niture. Additionally,
one should remember to wash and dry the cloth after use.
Dierent furniture from various medical supply companies
uses dierent fabric materials. For furniture made of fabric
materials, like fabric sofas and cushions. One can use cleaning
and maintenance agents to clean them.
CONCLUSION
The use of modern hospital furniture is important for the
comfort and safety of patients. Furniture not maintained and
cleaned properly, can present a health hazard to patients.
Healthcare professionals should be aware of the importance of
proper maintenance and cleaning of hospital fu rniture. Hospital
fur niture is an impor tant aspect of a hospital. It helps to provide
a comfortable and relaxing environment for the patients. In
addition, it also helps in the treatment and care of the patients.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic challenges hospital leaders to make time-sensitive, critical decisions about clinical operations and resource allocations. Objective: To estimate the timing of surges in clinical demand and the best- and worst-case scenarios of local COVID-19-induced strain on hospital capacity, and thus inform clinical operations and staffing demands and identify when hospital capacity would be saturated. Design: Monte Carlo simulation instantiation of a susceptible, infected, removed (SIR) model with a 1-day cycle. Setting: 3 hospitals in an academic health system. Patients: All people living in the greater Philadelphia region. Measurements: The COVID-19 Hospital Impact Model (CHIME) (http://penn-chime.phl.io) SIR model was used to estimate the time from 23 March 2020 until hospital capacity would probably be exceeded, and the intensity of the surge, including for intensive care unit (ICU) beds and ventilators. Results: Using patients with COVID-19 alone, CHIME estimated that it would be 31 to 53 days before demand exceeds existing hospital capacity. In best- and worst-case scenarios of surges in the number of patients with COVID-19, the needed total capacity for hospital beds would reach 3131 to 12 650 across the 3 hospitals, including 338 to 1608 ICU beds and 118 to 599 ventilators. Limitations: Model parameters were taken directly or derived from published data across heterogeneous populations and practice environments and from the health system's historical data. CHIME does not incorporate more transition states to model infection severity, social networks to model transmission dynamics, or geographic information to account for spatial patterns of human interaction. Conclusion: Publicly available and designed for hospital operations leaders, this modeling tool can inform preparations for capacity strain during the early days of a pandemic. Primary funding source: University of Pennsylvania Health System and the Palliative and Advanced Illness Research Center.

Objective To investigate the effectiveness of a daily attestation system used by employees of a multi-institutional academic medical center, which comprised of symptom-screening, self-referrals to the Occupational Health team, and/or a COVID-19 test. Design Retrospective cohort study of all employee attestations and COVID-19 tests performed between March and June 2020. Setting A large multi-institutional academic medical center, including both inpatient and ambulatory settings. Participants All employees who worked at the study site. Methods Data was combined from the attestation system (COVIDPass), the employee database, and the electronic health records, and was analyzed using descriptive statistics including chi-squared, Wilcoxon, and Kruskal-Wallis tests. We investigated whether an association existed between symptomatic attestations by the employees and them testing positive for COVID-19. Results After data linkage and cleaning, there were 2,117,298 attestations submitted by 65,422 employees between March and June 2020. Most attestations were asymptomatic (99.9%). The most commonly reported symptoms were sore throat (910), runny nose (637), and cough (570). Of the 2,026 employees who ever attested symptomatic, 905 employees were tested within 14 days of a symptomatic attestation, and 114 (13%) of these tests were positive. The most common symptoms associated with a positive COVID-19 test were anosmia (23% vs 4%) and fever (46% vs 19%). Conclusions Daily symptom attestations amongst healthcare workers identified a handful of employees with Covid-19. While the number of positives was low, attestations may help keep unwell employees off campus to try to prevent transmissions.

The evolution of digital health is entwined with federal regulation and policy. Whether considering what is or is not a medical device, the reimbursement for digital medical technologies, or physician services under Medicare or Medicaid related to remote patient monitoring or telehealth, the rules and policies governing digital health have not been easy to distinguish. In the face of rapid innovation, it has been difficult to fit these products and services into existing regulations of the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, particularly when these frameworks never contemplated what communications technologies can do today. Instead, rules have been misapplied, and in some cases, they have hampered the use of these technologies, depressing the proliferation of associated services. However, regulations have begun to change. We discuss the policy and regulatory changes that have begun to evolve and where they should continue to head.

This book introduces the concepts of Resilience-Based Design (RBD) as an extension of Performance-Based Design. It provides readers with a range of cutting-edge methodologies for evaluating resilience and clarifies the difference between resilience, vulnerability and sustainability. Initially, the book focuses on describing the different types of uncertainty that arise in the context of resilience evaluation. This is followed by an entire chapter dedicated to the analytical and experimental recovery functions. Then, starting from the definition of resilience provided by MCEER, an extension of the methodology is provided that introduces the seven dimensions of Community Resilience, summarized in the acronym PEOPLES. They are: Population and Demographics, Environmental/Ecosystem, Organized Governmental Services, Physical infrastructures, Lifestyle and Community Competence, Economic Development, and Socio-Cultural Capital. For each dimension, components and subcomponents are defined and the related indices are provided. Underlining the importance of the physical infrastructure dimension, the book provides several examples of applications for transportation, hydraulic, gas and power networks. The problem of interdependencies and the domino effect is also taken into account during the analysis. One of the book’s closing chapters focuses on different methodologies for improving disaster preparedness and engineering mitigation strategies, while the last chapter describes the different computer platforms available on the market for evaluating Community Resilience. The book offers readers an extensive introduction to the concept of Resilience-Based Design, together with selected advanced applications for specialists. No prerequisite knowledge is needed in order to understand the book, and the Appendix offers valuable supplemental information on e.g. the probabilistic concepts. As such, the book offers a valuable resource for graduate students, young engineers and researchers who are interested in the topic, and can also be used as a supplementary text in graduate level Disaster Resilience courses.
