Inthis research,tO addressthe above question,We admimisteredtwo tests to
COllegestudents:(i)theGotoEnglishTbst(GET),and(ii)theMinimalEnglishTbst
(MET).First,theGotoEnglishTbst(GET)wasdevelopedbyKenichiGoto,OneOfthe
authors ofthis paper;tO meaSure aleamer's spe11ing ability.Second,the Minimal
EnglishTbst(MET)wasdevelopedbyMaki,W励andHashimoto(2003),Who
Showd血如thereⅥ髄aStatistical1yslgmific弧tCOrrelationbetweenthescoresonthe
METandthe scores onthe College EntranCe Examidion(English Part)2002
admimisteredbytheCo11egeEntranCeEx血ionCederinJapan,血ichwecallthe
CT2002(r=.68,P<.05,andn=154).1T出sresult,aSmllasotherrelatedresultsto
beshownbelow;indicatethattoalargeextent,theMETmeaswesthesecondlanguage
PrOficiencythesameWaythattheCTdoes･Therefore,theMETcanbeusedas
sdbstituteforthe CTIwhichis consideredto be one ofthe standardtestsfor ESL
leamersinJapan.
The purpose of this paperis toinvestigate血etherthereis astatistical1y
SignificantcorrelationbetwecnthescoresontheGETandthescoresontheMET.h
thisresearch,WeadmimisteredtheGETandtheMETtocollegestudents,andfoundthat
therewasastatistical1yslgmificantStrOngCOrrelationbetweenthescoresontheGET
andthescoresontheMET(r=･81,P<.05,n=160).
