Abstract

From its emergence in the 7th century until its fall in 965, the Khazar Khaganate played a decisive role among the tribes and peoples settled in Eastern Europe. The Pax Khazarica contributed to the stabilization of ethnic and political relations in the region, which in turn gave the khaganate a high status in contacts with the Byzantine Empire and the Abbasid Caliphate. The Khazars benefited from the favorable geographic location and the benefits they gained from participating in long-distance trade. With the arrival of Scandinavian newcomers and the development of their settlement in the northern and north-eastern part of the Ruthenian lands (the area around Lake Ladoga and the upper Volga basin), contacts with them played an increasingly important role in the history of the Chaganate in the 9th-10th centuries. Oleg’s taking of power in Kiev and the territorial development of the Ruthenian state was a crucial moment. Although the Khazars maintained a strong position among the peoples and tribes of Eastern Europe during the first half of the 10th century, it was not without difficulties. The reason was the growing activity of the Scandinavians not only among the Slavs who settled in the basin of the Dnieper, Oka and the upper Volga, but also in the lands that were the immediate hinterland of the khaganate (Black Sea region, the mouth of the Volga and the Caspian region). In addition to merchant expeditions, the Varangians organized - with great panache and range - raids of a looting nature (e.g. Prince Igor’s campaigns). It cannot be ruled out that they inuenced the nature of the relationship between the Khazars and their dependent tribes in Eastern Europe. The collapse of the Khaganate, which took place as a result of the war campaigns undertaken by Prince Sviatoslav (965, 969), may indicate a more significant (than previously assumed) internal weakening of the Khazar state. Undoubtedly, it was related to the change in the current system of political and ethnic relations in Eastern Europe, and the actions of the Kiev princes played a decisive role. Another reason was the change in the course of the existing long-distance trade routes, and thus the reduction of the influence that the Khazars obtained from their control. Despite the progress in research on the history of the khaganate, little is known about its relations with the Scandinavians settled in Eastern Europe, as well as with Slavic tribes, including those remaining outside the Khazar sphere of influence, and the consequences of the fall of Khazar domination for the region’s economy. The research conducted so far shows that the influence of the Khazars, although not confirmed in all spheres, was more intense, as evidenced by the reception of the kagan title in relation to the Ruthenian rulers in the 10th-11th centuries.

An examination of 14,865 Samanid dirhams struck in Samarqand from 634 hoards discovered in western Eurasia dating from the tenth to the eleventh centuries shows that these coins were destined mainly for trade with northern Europe. Samarqand was a primary Samanid mint that issued dirhams during most of late ninth and tenth centuries, but its most intense years of production occurred from the 910s to the mid-920s. By 954, 92.26% of all dirhams issued in Samarqand by the Samanids had been struck. The beginnings of dirham production in Samarqand in the early 890s and the sharp increase in production in the following two decades closely correspond with the rise of commerce between northern Europe and Central Asia which initiated in ca. 900. The catastrophic drop in mint output from the second half of the tenth century can be attributed to the general decline in the Samanid economy that began with the fifth decade of the same century.

This book examines the Avar siege of Constantinople in 626, one of the most significant events of the seventh century, and the impact and repercussions this had on the political, military, economic and religious structures of the Byzantine Empire. The siege put an end to the power politics and hegemony of the Avars in South East Europe and was the first attempt to destroy Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. Besides the far-reaching military factors, the siege had deeper ideological effects on the mentality of the inhabitants of the Empire, and it helped establish Constantinople as the spiritual centre of eastern Christianity protected by God and his Mother. Martin Hurbanič discusses, from a chronological and thematic perspective, the process through which the historical siege was transformed into a timeless myth, and examines the various aspects which make the event a unique historical moment in the history of mankind – a moment in which the modern story overlaps with the legend with far-reaching effects, not only in the Byzantine Empire but also in other European countries.

REB 53 1995 France p. 237-270 C. Zuckerman, On the Date of the Khazars' Conversion lo Judaism and the Chronology of the Kings of the Bus Oleg and Igor. — This study dwells on several key issues in the history of the Khazars : the date of their conversion to Judaism — which is set in 861 or very soon afterwards — , the constitutional changes in the Khazar state, its relations with Byzantium and the Rus. An examination of the wars of the early 940s, which involved the Byzantines, the Khazars and the Rus, leads to a new chronology of the reign of the king of Rus Igor, summer 941 -winter 945, instead of the traditional 912- 945. The reign of Igor's predecessor, Oleg (traditional dates 879-912), moves up to little before 911-summer 941 (died in the winter 944/5). The history of the «Rus' of Kiev» is consequently abridged by at least forty years.

Sopki, a group of monumental barrows located exclusively in northwestern Russia, are the most impressive and well-preserved man-made structures of pre-Christian East Slavic culture [Fig. 1]. The sopki range in height from three to twelve meters, have steep slopes [Fig. 2] and are encircled by stone settings at the mound's base, which are often discernible in the turf. Of the sopki that have been excavated, the overwhelming majority contain calcined bones near the mound's top and are dated to the ninth and tenth centuries. Usually, there are no more than two or three graves per mound. The sopki differ from other mortuary constructions of the region in their large size, which suggests their likely interpretation as the funeral sites of tribal noblemen.1 Additionally, the sopki mounds are grouped around settlements, reflecting the Slavic migration patterns throughout northwestern Russia, suggesting their interpretation as Slavic funeral constructions.

This article deals with various aspects of trade in the 11th century as attested by documents written by Jewish merchants, or regarding them, found in the Cairo Geniza. The following topics are discussed: (a) Partnership; it seems that all transactions were carried out by way of partnership, each party acting in a different locality, and dealing with imports and exports from one country to the other. (b) The methods of accounting, based on regular reports between partners. (c) The ways of marketing the goods. (d) The payments, and matters of credit, price reductions, etc. (e) Disputes between merchants, and the ways of settling them, an oath being the most conclusive argument. (f) The nature and functions of a kind of leader of the merchants, wakl al-tujjr.

The story of the Chazars who had claimed a tribute from a Slavic tribe, the Poljanians, and received a sword in response, is usually considered in scholarship to be testimony that the Chazar empire was extended to the region of Kiev. A similar offering of a sword in Heimskringla and Nóregs konunga tal demonstrates that the story does not relate to a tribute paid to the Chazars, but rather the opposite, that the Poljanians suggested that the Chazars acknowledge their overlordship. Even if the narrative had Scandinavian origins, it was well assimilated by Russian compilers. Our interpretation shows that the story of the “Chazar tribute” belongs not to real, historical time or space, but rather to “annalistic space” under the influence of various narrative traditions. The theme of the sword became a kind of cliché, which is reiterated in several episodes when the Primary Chronicle tells of political subordination in the pre-Christian epoch. The development of the written tradition under Prince Jaroslav the Wise and his descendants led to a change in the original meaning of the archaic ritual, considered now in the light of literary rationalism. The tale was most likely invented and included in the chronicle by an early compiler in the middle or the second half of the eleventh century. Around the year 1110, the original motif of offering a sword was elaborated into a claim of tribute.
