Abstract
This paper focuses on the returnees of internal displacements, it thus concerns the recovery of
persons who were displaced from their homes, but who have returned to their origin and are in the
process of recovering from losses encountered. The problem at hand is that returnees have been
facing serious problem as they returned to their origin which includes food, water, shelter, and
economic difficulties which are related to their recovery. What needs to be understood here is the
strength and emotions used as active resources to overcome the shocks and loss encountered as a
result of displacement. The theoretical and methodological needs of this research were the
definition of resilience from a sociological perspective and the original contribution that this
discipline can give to the sociological resilience process in the context of displacement caused by
armed conflicts. Resilience as a concept is derived from the physical field and means the capacity
and the degree to which a metal can resist damage and return to its original state (Cyrulnik and
Malaguti 2005). The major objective is therefore to examine the resilience of the navigation
process toward recovery. The method followed in conducting the research involves the use of a
purposive sampling technique, where 123 respondents were drawn from the communities of
Goniri, Yadi, Katarko and Buni Gari mostly displaced and later returned. The data gathered were
analyzed using SPSS. Recommendations were made on how to encourage and support the
returnees towards recovering from the past.

ETHNIC BIGOTRY, REGIONAL POLITICS AND RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE ON
NIGERIAN DEMOCRACY
Adebisi, Abdulqudus Ayodeji

ABSTRACT
The paper examines the impact of ethnic bigotry, regional politics and religious influence on
Nigerian democracy. Nigeria in its heterogeneous nature comprises over 250 ethnic groups with
diversities in language, customs and tradition and the Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo as the major ethnic
groups. Similarly, Christianity and Islam as the dominant religions. The impact of ethnicity,
religion and regional politics on Nigerian democracy cannot be overemphasized as it threatens the
democratic processes and therefore posed a challenge to the notion of good governance of the
Nigerian State. This is a result of mistrust, suspicion and the domination of one ethnic group over
another and the outcome of these power tussles resulted in the sharing of major political offices
among the three major ethnic groups. The need for so-called proper representation between these
ethnic groups has posed a challenge to the credibility and competence of the supposed candidate.
Nigerian democracy suffers from the atmosphere of ethnic bigotry irrespective of the merit
involved. The problem of revenue allocation is one of the major causes of these problems with the
south-south and south-east regions complaining of marginalization and clamour for their inclusion
in the top-tier governance of the country. In Nigerian Democracy, Secularism was never achieved
with the influence of religion also contributing to heightening this tension. Thus, the paper
investigated and outlined the major causes of ethnic and religious bigotry in Nigerian democratic
processes. Against this background, this paper recommends and lay much emphasis on the
credibility and merits of the electioneering process and appointments of government officials to
public offices. Hence this should be devoid of bias, and ethnic and religious sentiments.

Abstract
Today, the use of remote sensing techniques and data is commonplace within many disciplines in
the natural sciences. Although there are quite a few examples of remote sensing to be found in the
social sciences, developments here have, on the whole, been less pronounced. The social
dimensions of technology utilization and assessment, with reliability, specificity, ease of access,
and openness among the main desiderata. The point is made that the interface between the
technology and the society it is designed to serve is crucial, for its nature depends on how, whether,
when, and by whom the technology will be utilized. Using secondary data, the paper seeks to
explore the issues involved in: 1) how remote sensing data has been put to use in social science
studies, and 2) how social science could better utilize the huge potential of remote sensing data.

RELIGIOUSITY AND SOCIAL ORDER
Apelogun Olugbemiga Wumi
Abstract
Seeing social order from the lens of a belief system encompasses ideology or set principles that
help individuals to interpret their everyday reality. Interpretation of everyday reality is largely
reinforced by strong feeling or belief that produces twin consequences: manifest and latent, factors
that either maintain or disrupt social order. Relatively new in our lexicon though, until the 17th
century the concept of "religion" received its modern shape although the Bible, the Quran, and
other ancient sacred texts did not have a concept of religion in the original languages and neither
did the people or the cultures in which these sacred texts were written. Codification of what was
formerly referred to as the ‘virtue of worship’ as ‘religion’ now promotes a sense of hysterical
response to ‘religiosity’ with grave consequences that further tear the hitherto unsafe world, hence
becoming a new threat to global peace. Out of all 1,763 known/recorded historical conflicts, 121,
or 6.87%, had religion as their primary cause. Axelrod et al (2004). The Great Big Book of Horrible
Things gave religion the primary cause of 11 of the world's 100 deadliest atrocities. Matthew,
White (2011). The information obtained in this work would serve as a springboard for exploring
new areas related to mitigating the uncontrollable fire of fanaticism caused by misunderstanding
and misrepresenting religious ethos. It also becomes an integral part of the university’s database
relating to the study of social order. Recommendations emanating from the study will make
religious fanatics to be more liberal. It will help policy formulations toward the de-radicalization
of fundamentalists and building viable social control mechanisms.

LOOSENED JOINTS OF TRADITIONAL GOVERNANCE STRUCTURES AND
INCREASING INTRACOMMUNAL VIOLENCE
BADEY, Dinebari Phd, And Erondu, Chinyere Phd
Abstract
Within the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, a grave situation seems to be increasing at an alarming
rate, with the potential for escalating the already precarious socio-political cum economic
circumstances of inhabitants in places like Bodo City. That situation has to do with the levels of
violence which occur daily at the individual, group and institutional levels. This study set out to
show that the life expectancy rates have drastically reduced due to this violence which is caused
by a mix of factors such as declining space for economic participation and increasing
individualism, deliberate interference by external groups such as the Oil Transnationals and the
destruction of the environment through excessive use without conservation & destructive artisanal
activities, leaving an intensive and desperate struggle by individuals and groups for elbow room
for them to survive. Using the Political Economy theory, the study attempts to link the incidents
of violence with the political and economic environment that local communities found themselves,
in which extraction of wealth is being experienced without a commensurate share in the outcome
of the proceeds of such wealth, even with and especially when compensation and other schemes
are undertaken. The study recommends that Traditional Governance structures which are
integrated should be encouraged without interference by the State through classifications and other
means. Also, a bottom-up participatory and transparent approach hinged on accountability will
douse the need for violent contestations faster than the security approach.

Abstract
Female education is a strategic development priority. Better-educated women tend to be healthier
than uneducated women, participate more in the formal labour market, earn more income, give
birth to fewer children, marry at a later age, and provide better health care and education to their
children. The paper posits that academic integrity is very crucial for the female pursuit of academic
knowledge in realizing their potential. This makes the connection between female education and
academic integrity significant. The values of academic integrity are expected to be promoted or
re-cultivated in the school. A positive correlation exists between women’s educational potential to
enhance political participation, fertility regulation, labour force engagement, national productivity,
increase life expectancy and overall social development. Three research questions and three
hypotheses were formulated and tested in the study. Relevant and related literature was reviewed.
The study adopted the survey research design. The sample for this study consisted of 400 final-
year female undergraduate students selected from three faculties. The sample size was derived
using Taro Yamen’s statistical method. The basic sampling techniques were stratified purposive.
In analyzing the obtained data, the Chi-square inferential statistics was adopted. Female education
for social development was categorized into political participation, fertility regulation, and labour
force engagement; academic dishonesty was categorized into examination cheating, plagiarism,
unethical behaviour, purchasing of research papers and falsification of research data. The findings
revealed that female education for social development is significantly moderated and modulated
by academic integrity and reduced academic dishonesty in terms of cheating, plagiarism, unethical
behaviour, purchase of research papers and falsification of research data among lecturers and
students. Hence the paper recommended that because of the unique role of our women in
facilitating social development through political participation, fertility regulation and labour force
engagement, academic integrity should be re-cultivated in the tertiary education system. The paper
notes that women have a greater role to play in guaranteeing the rapid socio-economic
development of the nation. This rationalizes the need for value orientation via academic integrity
through female education.

Abstract
In October 2022, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced its intention to redesign the
Nigerian currency. This according to the policy is to be in the best interest of Nigerians to check
terrorism financing, counterfeiting and imbalances in fiscal space as well as to enable the apex
bank to take control of the currency in circulation. In as much as this exercise has its gains for
Nigerians, it also inflicted pains on the masses. This study examined the gains and pains of a
cashless policy in a semi-urban community in Abia State, Nigeria. The theoretical orientation of
the study is anchored on the Modernization Theory. Data were collected using a digital mixed
method design which is made of a structured questionnaire and an in-depth interview guide which
was administered electronically. For the analysis of the data, we used frequency count for the
quantitative data and content analysis for the qualitative data. Findings showed that though the
cashless policy may have a long-term benefit, the immediate effects on the people living in semi-
urban and rural areas are pain, anguish and misery. Based on the findings the study recommends
amongst others that in developing countries with low computer literacy like Nigeria, the transition
from full cash to a cashless society should be a gradual process.

ELECTIONS IN FRAGILE STATE: INPUNITY AND POWER ACQUISITION

Abstract
Elections are the vehicle through which elected representative lay holds power for the effective
allocation of shared resources and values. In weak states found in most developing nations,
especially in Africa, the flagrant abuse and ignominy with which politicians ascend to power call
to question if there is any modicum of democratic tenets in our electoral lexicon. Previous and
recent elections in Nigeria have been conducted on the backdrop of brazen impunity by politicians
and abuses by security forces and political thugs to coerce the electorates during elections. The
presence of a political culture of impunity, arrogance and judicial rascality has come to cohere
with our electoral process thereby giving legitimacy to illegitimacy. Relying on the clientelism
theory as a theoretical guide, the paper situates our argument that in client politics, an organized
minority or interest group benefits at the expense of the public, hence, their elevation of impunity
and absurdity to unimaginable dimensions in our socio-political lives. Data for this study will be
generated through the documentary method and analyzed through content analysis of written
records. The paper, therefore, recommended amongst other vital ones, the building of strong
institutions rather than strong personalities in our democratic institutions.

Abstract
Sexual health problems have become an important focus for policy and academic attention. Efforts
have been made over time to improve the sexual and reproductive health of young people through
policies and programs. However, significant challenges persist among young people in tertiary
education, which raises concerns about responsible sexual behaviour. Specifically, among
undergraduates, inherent sexual immoralities have led some university proprietors in Nigeria to
develop sexual responsibility principles to regulate the sexual behaviour of their students. This
study explores students' attitudes towards these principles in selected mission Universities in
Nigeria. The study was based on the Health Belief Model and employed a cross-sectional
descriptive design with multistage sampling. Nearly six in every ten (56.1%) respondents were
females, and the majority (80.8%) were between the ages of 19 and 23. Most respondents were
Christians (70.3%), and while 48.0% were in a relationship, almost half (46.5%) were not sexually
active. Although 58.7% believed that students do not obey the rules and regulations on sexual
behaviour, more than half (51.2%) disliked the sexual behaviour rules in their school. While only
37.05% strongly agreed that sexual responsibility principles have aided in the practice of sexual
abstinence, a majority (73.3%) perceived sexual responsibility principles as a violation of their
rights to freedom of association. Although weak, a significant association was found between
socio-demographic variables (age, gender, and level of study) and students’ perceptions of the
efficacy of rules in controlling sexual activities among students. Engagements in sports and
spiritual activities were identified by the students as the major coping mechanisms that enable
them to adhere to the school regulations on sexual responsibility. This study highlights the need
for university communities to reorient their predominantly young students on the importance of
regulations for their health and well-being. It is also essential for universities to link sexual
responsibility rules and regulations to broader sexual and reproductive health issues.

SOCIAL CAPITAL, FOREIGN INVESTMENT AND THE CRISIS OF LEGITIMATION
IN AFRICA
Chris ‘E Onyemenam PhD.
Department of Sociology & Anthropology, Baze University, Abuja
Abstract
Informal social capital has not only assumed a dominant role in the fight against acute poverty but
has unwittingly emerged as the pivot of renewed ‘ethnicism’ and ‘reactive nationalism’ across
Africa. The humongous social remittances - embedded in and leveraging informal yet durable
networks and social relations are the bastion of the self-help approaches to ‘gap-filling’ the poor
governance outcomes in contemporary African societies. Seen as the much-needed, albeit
unintended substitute for the declining foreign investment and the unconscious ‘importation of
Western cultural values and lifestyle’, it engenders a threefold impactful phenomenon: poverty
alleviation, investible assets/funds and influence on the citizens’ perception of and engagement
with the State on its obligations to the citizens and therefore the legitimation process. This study
posits, using an explanatory-descriptive approach and secondary data, that social (remittances)
capital has dwarfed the contributions of ‘foreign investment’ in the socio-economic development
and poverty alleviation process in Africa. It is increasingly providing the impetus for radical
perceptions of ‘governance’, ‘institutions’, ‘institutional effects and ‘change’ that reinforce
citizens’ burgeoning discontent with and protest against the State’s failure to meet its basic citizen-
obligations of welfare and security of lives and property. It nurtures the social dynamics, mediated
by digital technology, that emboldens citizens to funnel their shared concerns on insensitive
leadership, poor governance, growing unemployment, criminality, acute poverty and worsening
insecurity, into questioning their continuing loyalty to the State and acceptance of the status quo.
The consequences manifest in the migration trend, citizen ethnic identification, and growing
nepotism, in the face of State failure, which further ‘de-legitimizes’ governance, aggravates citizen
frustrations and resorts to informal yet durable networks and social relations embedded in
community social structures. This emergent phenomenon predisposes Africa’s youthful ‘Digitech’
citizens to belligerent revolt and benevolent refusal to submit to constituted authority. The study
concludes that social remittances and the Western culture it engenders may continue to foster a
legitimation crisis in Africa, stimulate ‘reactive nationalism’, and reinvent and strengthen the
centrality of informal yet durable networks and social relations embedded in the community social
structure of African communities and lay permanently to rest the ‘anti-development’ toga on it.

Abstract
Purpose This paper sought to contribute to value orientation research by exploring the nexus
between entrepreneurship education for socio-economic development and re-cultivating academic
integrity. The paper specifically focused on the stimulation of entrepreneurial confidence and re-
cultivating academic integrity, entrepreneurial knowledge acquisition for employment generation
and re-cultivating academic integrity, sustainable vocational skills acquisition and re-cultivating
academic integrity. The Innovation Theory of Joseph A. Schumpeter and the Need for
Achievement Theory of McClelland constituted the theoretical framework.
Design/methodology/approach The survey research design was adopted. Specifically, the study
was based on a questionnaire administered. The sample for this study consisted of 770 respondents
(final-year students drawn from six faculties in the University of Calabar. Cochran’s (1963)
formula will be used. The sampling procedure was used to select the sample of the multi-stage.
Findings The results illustrated that entrepreneurship students have a clear conceptual
understanding of academic dishonesty and how to avoid it. The knowledge acquired from
entrepreneurship education has a significant association with academic integrity; the stimulation
of entrepreneurial confidence from entrepreneurship education is significantly associated with
academic integrity; sustainable vocational skill acquisition is significantly associated with
academic integrity.
Research implications The research identified a clear convergence between entrepreneurship
education for socio-economic development and students’ ethical stance regarding academic
integrity and their ability to recognise it as a breach of academic guidelines.
Practical implications The practical implications for entrepreneurship education are: first, the
university needs to emphasise to entrepreneurship students that academic dishonesty is a breach
of academic guidelines and is treated as a serious offence. Second, the university, in partnership
with relevant stakeholders must demonstrate the importance of entrepreneurship education to
socio-economic development sustained on academic integrity.
Originality/value The study supported previous research which identified that entrepreneurship
students held strong ethical views regarding academic dishonesty. This paper highlights that the
re-cultivation of academic integrity in entrepreneurship education as a result of the findings of this
study would help in socio-economic development through the stimulation of entrepreneurial
confidence, entrepreneurial knowledge acquisition for employment generation and sustainable
vocational skills acquisition

Abstract
This paper discussed the inability of Nigerian social institutions in ensuring that the future of
Nigeria is guaranteed. It started with a play on words to call attention to the many areas in Nigerian
life in which things are done the wrong way. It listed such cases as the immediate past Federal
Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities face-off that has left the ASUU
devastated by all qualifications. It even called attention to the blatant refusal of the government of
Nigeria to honor court cases on many occasions. The paper then focused mainly on the Nigerian
security institution which has so far and in most cases been accused of having derailed from the
statutory route for its establishment in ensuring that every Nigerian citizen benefits from the very
reasons they are established. It borrowed from the molecular theory in physics to explain why the
Nigerian polity is always in a state of flux citing the just concluded general election in Nigeria as
a case in which the security institution did not live up to expectations. The conflict theory in
sociology could as well have sufficed but for the need for something new.

Abstract
Climate change is an urgent concern in Nigeria, with far-reaching impacts on the environment,
livelihoods, and human well-being. Increasingly, there is a global recognition of the significant
role that indigenous knowledge and values can play in climate change mitigation, adaptation, and
environmental stewardship. This paper explores the contribution of indigenous knowledge and
values to promoting climate change mitigation and environmental stewardship in Nigeria. Drawing
on examples from various regions across the country, it highlights the diverse ways in which
traditional ecological knowledge and cultural values can inform and enhance environmental
management practices. The paper concludes by recommending the mainstreaming of indigenous
knowledge systems into environmental legislation, policy, and institutional frameworks to
promote sustainable development. It emphasizes the crucial need for greater recognition, support,
and participation of indigenous communities in decision-making processes related to climate
change and environmental management.

GENDER AND VALUE ORIENTATION AMONG INDIGENOUS CROSS RIVERIANS

Abstract
This paper explores the relationship between gender and value orientation among indigenous Cross
Riverians in Nigeria. It explores the various values gender place on the individual by prioritizing
which gender role the individual plays in society. Research has however shown that gender plays
a significant role in shaping value orientation among indigenous Cross Riverians nay Nigerians.
This paper, therefore, professes that women tend to prioritize values such as community, family,
and spirituality, while men tend to prioritize values such as autonomy, individualism, and
materialism. These differences are influenced by a combination of biological, psychological, and
social factors, including hormonal differences, socialization, and cultural norms. Cultural values
also play a significant role in shaping individuals' value orientation. For example, despite the
diversity in Cross River cultures, men are expected to be the breadwinners and decision-makers,
while women are expected to be nurturers and caregivers. These cultural expectations reinforce
gender differences in value orientation and limit opportunities for individuals to express values
that may not conform to traditional gender roles. Therefore, an understanding of the relationship
between gender and value orientation among indigenous Cross Riverians is important for
promoting cultural sensitivity and social justice. By recognizing the unique cultural contexts in
which individuals live, sociologists, social workers, economists political scientists and
policymakers can better tailor their interventions and strategies to meet the diverse needs and
preferences of different groups. The paper, therefore, recommends an understanding of the various
concepts of gender roles in value orientation can help to promote more inclusive and equitable
societies where individuals can express their values and identities without fear of discrimination
or marginalization.

Abstract
This article aimed at evaluating the social pathologies (that is all forms of deviant behaviour as
social problems) in contemporary Delta State and Youth counterculture against the backdrop of
public policies by governments. The methodology was to use the observational research design to
gather data through focus group discussions (FGDs) among the five ethnic groups in Delta State.
The participants were grouped according to the same/similar socio-demographic information. The
number of FGDs was 15 groups with a general mean (X
) age of 21. 50 years. The descriptive-
statistical analysis of percentages, multi-scale dimensional analysis and content analysis
techniques were adopted to analyse the data collected. The results show that, generally, youths are
protesting ritualistically by innovating novel cultures against our normal way of life, through their
attitudes and behaviours which are at variance with the subsisting social and traditional norms, and
mores in Delta State. The study also confirmed that traditional values have substantially collapsed
among these young people in Delta State. These are against the government’s public policy on
school dress code, alcoholism, all forms of fraud, cultism, rape, armed robbery, kidnapping,
prostitution, corruption, anti-abortion, etc., aimed at regulating and changing negative attitudes
and bad behaviour by the youths. In line with the Marxist's perception and Normative Ethics of
society, the study recommends that government institutions and the family should implement
vigorously and publicly the statutory consequences on youths' show of social pathologies. It was
concluded that only these consequences will serve as deterrents to youth counterculture, strengthen
institutions and normalize society.

Abstract
The objectives of the study are to examine how often teenagers engage in social media and the
impact of such knowledge gained on the ideas and lifestyle of teenagers in Nigeria. The study
adopts the quantitative method of data collection with the use of a questionnaire administered to
students in senior secondary schools 1- 3 (SS1-SS3) both male and female. Of the 3 wards in our
area, five schools were purposively selected from each of the wards due to the population. A
sample of 24 students was drawn randomly from the selected schools making a total of three
hundred and sixty (360) respondents. A structured questionnaire with both closed and open-ended
questions was used as the research instrument with simple percentage and regression analysis used
to measure and explain the objectives of the study.
The study shows that students often engage in the use of social media for networking more than
for educative purposes. The majority of the respondents use social media to communicate and
contact friends and loved ones more than completion of assignments and tasks. Also, students
often make use of social media as a means of role modeling in place of fashion, relationship and
few make use of social media as a means of gaining educative knowledge.
In conclusion, social media have impacted teenagers both positively and negatively based on the
purpose of their use. There should be serious awareness of the intended purpose of social media
so as not to misuse the medium for negative purposes.

Abstract
Several scholarly debates have proven the fact that; without solid Social Institutions, a society
cannot realize even the basic societal task of growth and sustainable development. In a situation
such as this, the tendency for the citizenry to tilt towards heinous crimes and other harmful
practices would certainly be high. Therefore, interrogating the social dynamics that enable nations
to realize their history, know what to preserve, and how to connect such with the existential
realities of contemporary times becomes a necessary proposition, especially in Nigeria. From a
feminist perspective, if the dominant ideology in social institutions craves for women to be
perceived as second fiddle and subservient to men in a society already experiencing globalization,
cultural diffusion, and technology, then there will be suppression of the female gender, such as
inheritance rights. The paper argued that; even in contemporary times, the Nigerian nation still
lacks solid Social Institutions, and utilizing that still struggling to adapt to new cultural conditions
with a dominant ideology that can help maintain powerful social, economic, and political interests
for both sexes. Needless to say, in recent decades, there has been a lot of exchange of ideas and
concepts, through a worldwide integration of cultures, social movements, and government policies

Abstract
Nigeria is fast drifting into a failed state. The economy is in shambles, vote buying has become a
norm while kidnapping for ransom is the trending business nationwide. The Central Bank of
Nigeria embarked on currency redesigning in its bid to address the aforementioned issues.
However, some corrupt bank workers thwarted CBN’s noble objectives by hoarding the newly
redesigned currencies for politicians rather than making them available to the general public. This
snowballed into a severe cash crisis where many small businesses wound up. It is against this
backdrop that this study investigated the socio-economic implications of CBN’s currency redesign
crisis in Lagos, Nigeria. The conflict theory of Karl Marx was adopted as a framework, whereas
cross-sectional and exploratory designs were employed. The study utilized simple random and
snowballing sampling techniques. The study adopted both quantitative and qualitative research
instruments with a sample of two hundred (200) respondents and forty (40) interviewees. Thirty
In-depth interviews (IDI), four Case Studies, and six Key Informants (KII) were drawn from
members of the general public in Lagos State. Quantitative data were analyzed with the aid of
SPSS Version 2.0, whereas qualitative data were content analyzed. The result of the study showed
that inflation and crime rates have drastically minimized in Lagos due to the cashless policy and
naira redesigning. There is a great need for CBN to adhere strictly to the maximum over-the-
counter cash withdrawal limit per week for both individuals and corporate bodies.

Abstract
This study seeks to examine various sources of information on career choices among young and
middle-aged adults in Nigeria. A descriptive research design was employed to collect primary data
on sources of information on career choice among young and middle-aged adults in Ibadan
Southwest Nigeria. A sample of 505 respondents was selected from five categories of young and
middle-aged adults using the quota sampling technique, a structured questionnaire was used as a
research instrument, and quantitative data were analyzed at both univariate and bivariate levels.
Findings showed that the Internet, mass media, schools attended and social media were the major
sources of information on career choice. Also, the results showed that final-year undergraduates
most received information on career choice through political affiliation, fresh graduates most
received via the internet, publicly paid workers through political affiliation, privately paid workers
from religious leaders, and self-employed by self or from God. These findings will be useful for
policymakers in developing employment policy; for employers in engaging the widely used
sources of information on career choice; and for job seekers in searching for the right sources of
information. Access to these findings will facilitate the timely realization of the 2030 development
agenda, especially as it relates to youth employment.

Abstract
This paper explores the practice and mixture of politics and religion in the Nigerian context.
Religion has come to be mixed up or embedded in Nigerian politics and over time, this has, on one
hand, generated substantial controversies as to the legality and or otherwise of this mixture. This
paper explores the mixture from both Islamic and secular perspectives. The background of the
major Nigerian religions, Islam and Christianity, alongside their backgrounds and spread, are also
over-viewed. The paper is theoretical and qualitative. Data are sourced from secondary sources
such as Holy Scriptures, books, journal articles, public documents, newspapers, and magazines, as
well as some historical facts and other archival references related to the Nigerian state, the major
religions, and their respective practices. The paper explores the background of the Nigerian state
and the various political and constitutional developments that affect the growth and development
of the Nigerian state concerning politics and religion. The paper explores the mixture of religion
and politics concerning the various ethnoreligious and geo-political backgrounds of the Nigerian
state. The paper finally makes some recommendations for the practice and mixture of politics and
religion in Nigeria.

ABSTRACT
The astronomical increase in electoral fraud-related cases in most developing countries is vast
becoming a major source of concern globally. Although the majority of these nations practice
democracy in one form or the other, the dividend attendant to the embracement of “democratic
ideals” is far from being achieved. The growth in corruption, election rigging, and political
violence, collectively breeding unemployment, malnutrition, poverty, mass disillusionment, and
crime portends a bleak future. This equally functions to explain the steady rate of retrogression
often recorded socio-politically. The impact of local and international intervention expounded in
political ideas, foreign aid, loans and subsidies meant to bequeath these democratizing nations'
strong political structures has consistently failed to translate into the required socio-political
development. For instance, in Nigeria, past elections revealed a clear disjunction between people's
choices and electoral outcomes and this is further made worse by the non-committal to political
accountability reflexive in window dressing electoral reforms. Consequently, this paper seeks to
examine the prevalence and the magnitude of electoral fraud in Nigeria with the view of
quantifying its cost to socio-political growth. It also reviews the activity of the political class as it
creates and strengthens political borders capable of destabilizing the current democratic
arrangement. Finally, the paper recommends strategies for meeting challenges in the area of
electoral fraud eradication.

Abstract
Nigeria is one of the most populous Black countries in Africa with over 200 million inhabitants
and fully endowed with both human and natural resources. Yet, most of her populace still suffers
from issues such as insecurity, illiteracy, poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, etc. These are
social problems constituted by leadership ineptitude, corruption, and inhumane treatment toward
one another. However, the role of religion cannot be over-emphasized due to the fact Nigerians
are mostly religious people irrespective of tribe, sex, age, or ethnicity. Religion tends to be the
opium of the less privileged in every society, especially when situations or conditions become
hopeless to the people. Thus, socialization starts from the cradle in as much as man is born to be
social. Therefore, so many factors may have contributed to the increasing rate of moral decadence
and valued orientation in Nigeria, with little or no attention given to these issues yet, most
Nigerians lack discipline and are impatient because most of the problems prioritized in other
literature may not speak to the problem in question. This paper, therefore, identifies and addresses
various issues such as family background, level of literacy, environment, belief system, western
civilization, urbanization, globalization, unemployment, poverty, and indiscipline as some of the
factors that tend to increase moral decadence and valued orientation in Nigeria. The paper further
recommends that to foster strong institutions in Nigeria, all existing social institutions such as the
family, religion, education, government, economy and the rest of others should as a matter of
sincerity, work together interwoven as one in making life more meaningful to all Nigerians, in as
much as these institutions are being governed by Nigerians.

ABSTRACT
Towards the end of 2022, the central bank of Nigeria (CBN) announces a policy of naira redesign,
of N200, N500, and N1000 notes. According to the Central Bank of Nigeria, this policy is with
many benefits to the economy, including improving the security features of the new currency,
reducing the level of hoarding of money by affluent Nigerians, mitigating counterfeiting of the
currency, retrieving the huge amount of money outside the banking system, control the amount of
money in circulation with the view of controlling the rate of inflation in Nigeria. Although certain
studies have studied the implication of this policy on the economy, however, the study seems to
be lacking in the knowledge and perception of the people on the policy. Thus, this study is aimed
at studying the knowledge and perception of the people on the policy within the framework of
these intentions by the central bank in which the naira was a redesigned and its institutional
impacts. Working within the interpretive paradigm, this study adopts a qualitative methodology;
in-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with randomly selected
respondents. Findings indicate a lack of accurate and adequate knowledge of the economic
implications within which the policies were made, leading to wrong perceptions and negative
actions towards the policy. Consequently, the study concludes by positing that the policy was
preceded by inadequate information on the intention and intended benefits of the policy and
possible means of coping with its accompanied changing effects. Thus, proper orientation on any
policy, and the provision of any means of managing the effects, is recommended before policy
introduction.

Abstract
The paper highlights the assumptions and classifications of Phenomenology in social world. It also
examines the relevance of Alfred Schutz (1932) phenomenology of the social world and the
development of the school of phenomenology. Phenomenology is among the micro sociological
analyses that rooted in the European philosophical tradition. The theory emphasizes the close
observation of human experience and especially the ways that the basic categories of
understanding are formed. It looks at what the world is like, how it can be known and describes
the control of mental entities in relation to the world. The paper explains how phenomenology as
a method of philosophy influenced psychologist, sociologist and others to explain how people
interact at a micro level, and also actively produce and maintain meaning attached to their action.
The paper gave the brief biography of Alfred shurtz and how he was interested and influenced by
the work of German sociologist Max weber’s (1864-1920), and the philosopher Edmund Husserl’s
(1839 1938) phenomenological ideas. Alfred shurtz work contributed immensely toward the
development of phenomenology as a school of thought under sociology, due to the fact that he was
the one that brought the term into sociology and applied it in order to address and proffer solutions
to the problem of the society.

Abstract
Corruption has become a household name in Nigeria as no day passes without a case of corruption.
This phenomenon has eaten deep into the fabric of our society such that corruption is perceived as
a normal way of life. This paper examines the phenomenon of corruption in its totality. Adopting
a historical perspective, the paper examined the various administrations in Nigeria after
independence and concluded that no genuine effort has been made toward eradicating corruption.
This has encouraged many Nigerians to engage in several unethical practices thereby negating
positive values that would have helped us in building a strong and virile Nation. Though the present
administration of President Buhari seems to be making frantic efforts toward the eradication of
corruption, not much has been achieved. The paper, therefore, recommends stiffer penalties for
corrupt officers, reorientation, eradication of poverty, and promulgation of laws that will enhance
effective and speedy prosecution of offenders amongst others as a way out of this debacle.

Abstract
Widows are women who have lost their spouses by death and have not remarried. Widowhood
brings the division of household roles along the gender line to a halt among widows. Men are the
security, the major provider, and final decision makers of the family and women perform such
roles as cooking and serving, cleaning, washing, child care, water collection, and many others.
Widows assume dual gender roles. Some widows get inheritance and other assistance in the
performance of the dual-gender roles but some others are faced with discrimination, denial of
inheritance, in-laws claiming the widow’s assets to belong to the late husband and taking over the
asset, economic difficulty, social pains, etc. To determine the prevalence of challenging
widowhood in society, this paper thus set out to find out the rate of widows faced with challenges
relative to those not faced with challenges. The data was generated through the survey. The
findings indicated that the majority of widows face serious challenges. The paper then concludes
by stating that challenging widowhood is a social problem demanding policy formation and
implementation to curb the problem.

Abstract
Culture projects morals which must be acquired by man as member of the society. But some
traditional practices have offered youths the opportunity to seize the moral boundaries and forced
expansion toward lost of traditional values. This research examined the roles of youths in twisting
communal values through engagement in drug abuse on the basis of traditional rites as cultural
heritage of Iman Ibom people of Etinan Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The
study was conducted in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Etinan Local
Government Area was divided by cluster into Iman North and Iman South based on the existing
geo-political divides. 6 villages were purposively selected, 3 from each cluster within Iman North
and Iman South based on their homogeneous characteristics. The Fetterman’s Big-net approach
was used to select study participants from each of the selected villages. Cultural influence on
youths’ drugs/psychoactive substance abuse behaviour model was adopted by the researchers to
provide a conceptual framework for the study. The researchers adopted ethnographic research
design for the study which involves multiple qualitative data collection techniques as in-depth
interview, key informant interview, focus group discussion and objective observation by the
researchers. Data were analysed thematically with excerpts. Findings showed that some customs
and traditional practices that were meant to control social behaviours tend to generate unintended
consequences among youths. Inspired by the findings, the study makes case for a culture-mediated
regulation of illicit drinks among traditional items that are culturally approved for youths during
rites observances.

EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENTS AND SOCIAL EXCLUSION OF SINGLE MOTHERS

Abstract
Social exclusion, particularly among single mothers, is a significant social phenomenon with
psychological and economic consequences for victims. Educational attainment is thought to be
beneficial. Although gender inequality in education has improved dramatically over the last
decade, progress has not been made even in the developing world. Feminist theory was employed
in the study. The study used a descriptive survey design, which is appropriate for a study aimed at
analyzing a continuing phenomenon. The population for the study consisted of all single mothers
in Ganjuwa and Bauchi Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Bauchi State. A purposive sampling
technique was used to select one urban and one rural local government area in the state. The study
found a significant positive relationship between educational attainment and decreased social
exclusion (r = 0.67, P 0.05). This result implied that an increase in education led to a corresponding
increase in the number of single mothers who are not socially excluded from the study (and vice
versa). Therefore, the stated Null hypothesis was rejected and the alternate hypothesis was
adopted. The study concludes that education attainment is seen as a very significant contributor to
the expected reduction in social exclusion phenomena among the sampled single mothers. If the
phenomenal decrease in incidences of social exclusion is to be achieved in due course, it is
therefore recommended that educating women remains the most feasible option among a few other
policy alternatives.

Abstract
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) recently announced the full implementation of the cashless
policy in Nigeria. Cashless policies refer to the use of electronic payments, such as mobile money
and digital banking using credit or debit cards to pay for goods and services. The apex bank had
explained that the cashless policy is aimed at reducing the amount of hard currency circulating in
the economy and the rapid inflation rate, scaling up financial inclusion, and reducing cases of
armed robbery, kidnapping, terrorism financing, advanced fee fraud, graft payment, extortion, and
other crimes. However, the policy has caused an increase in transaction costs and a general
decrease in access to healthcare services such as assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs).
Overall, the policy has significant implications for the assisted reproductive sector in Nigeria,
which has until now been largely supported by cash payments. This paper seeks to generally
examine the issues, problems, and prospects of the CBN cashless policy regarding assisted
reproductive treatments and its implications for socioeconomic development in Nigeria. It will
specifically provide an understanding of the current state, taking into consideration how the policy
may undermine the viability of assisted reproductive technologies in Nigeria. It will also include
an examination of the affordability or current costs implications for patients; the financial burden
associated with the cashless policy for the assisted reproductive procedure; and the accessibility
of technology or resources necessary to access these services, such as internet access or the ability
to pay for assisted reproductive procedure electronically. Additionally, this paper will discuss the
potential benefits of the cashless policy and prospects for assisted reproduction services in Nigeria.
While there have been some attempts to mitigate the impacts of the policy, it is clear that more
needs to be done to ensure that all Nigerians have access to the services they need such as assisted
reproductive technologies (ARTs) in Nigeria.

Abstract
Victims of population displacement are prone to multiple levels of adverse conditions of life
including inhibited right to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH). This present study was
conducted among the displaced Bakassi returnees in Akwa Ibom State, South-South Nigeria, to
investigate some cultural factors militating against the right to access, distribution, and other water
needs within the purview of WaSH among the displaced population. The study was a qualitative
interrogation of competing narratives harvested from different tools of data collection, such as in-
depth interviews, focus group discussions, and key informant investigation. The Bakassi
resettlement and re-integration model was adopted to provide the conceptual explanation of the
condition of the displaced people concerning their basic needs, though a special focus was directed
to water. Findings show that there exists a gap between the real need and felt the need by study
participants in matters concerning access and distribution of water. This disconnection of needs
tends to impact negatively WaSH in the study area. On the strength of this finding, the study
advocates for programmatic policy intervention to upscale awareness on right to water generally
and to ensure effective re-orientation of people living in humanitarian conditions towards
embracing WaSH in specific terms.

EFFECTS OF MONETARY POLICIES ON NIGERIA INFLATION
Ogbuke, Martha Uchenna
Abstract
The world over, monetary policy is a major macroeconomic tool used to control the economy or
at least direct the economic path of nations. Instruments such as interest rates, liquidity, cash
reserve, and statutory reserves are some of the monetary policy instruments used to control the
circulation of money in the economy. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has never shied away
from using these monetary policy instruments. A case at hand is the recent naira redesign and
restrictive cash policies (fewer naira notes and limited use of e-currency) put in place by the CBN.
The implementation of these policies, which involved the control of money supply (MS) and
liquidity ratio (LR), was supposed to curb inflation among other things. Given the political and
judicial turn of events and consequent hardships average Nigerians were subjected to, it becomes
pertinent to question the actual effects monetary policies have on inflation, hence this study. In the
study, monetary policy was proxied by Money Supply and Liquidity Ratio as independent
variables while the inflation rate was the dependent variable. Unit root test was used for
preliminary analysis and all estimating variables were stationary at first difference which shows
that the model interpretation is a true representation of the relationships that exist between the
explained and explanatory variables. Ordinary Least Square (OLS) was used to test the hypotheses.
The result from the regression analysis showed that money supply had a positive but fairly
insignificant impact on the inflation rate while a measure of liquidity ratio had a negative but
highly significant impact on the inflation rate. The study recommended that the CBN should be
given complete autonomy as this will shield it from political interference witnessed in the
implementation of the recent naira redesign and cash-restrictive policies. Also, the CBN on its part
must desist from using monetary policy instruments as a measure for solving political problems;
they should be used purely for economic purposes.

Abstract
Self-determination has been recognized as a jus cogens under international law as well as the rights
of states to territorial sovereignty and integrity. The United Nations Charter and the African
Charter on People and Human Rights embrace the principle of self-determination. This scenario
has raised critical questions on the future of internal self-determination as to whether ethnic groups
in existing states have the backing of international law to break away from parent states.
International Law does not embrace separatism if the secessionist entity attempts to secede through
violation of international law like the prohibition of the use of force. The issue is why the silence
on separatism? This paper critically examined events that shaped the Buhari presidency between
2015 to 2023 on IPOB’s quest to secede from Nigeria. The doctrinal research method was adopted
with a mixture of primary and secondary sources of data. President Buhari’s handling of trends
such as the proscription of IPOB, Sit at home, Unknown gunmen, rendition of Nnamdi Kanu from
Kenya, and the court cases were analyzed by the paper. The paper concludes that although the
IPOB put up a more resilient agitation under Buhari, the task of secession is not an easy one. The
paper recommends the establishment of an independent and impartial commission of inquiry to
assess the cases of extra-judicial killings and human rights abuses under Buhari. The paper further
recommends the next government set up a high-level peace and reconciliatory commission for a
progressive Nigeria. This will go a long way toward resolving the agitation.

Abstract
Background: Multiple evidence suggests that the ascendant value of marriage and childbirth over
other social progress undermined human capital development in terms of educational attainment
among females in developing societies. Suffix it to say that an increasing number of females are
gaining admission into the University in Southeast, Nigeria. However comparatively educational
attainment in terms of post-graduate studies differs between gender within the region. This study
examined the dominant social factors that predispose females to marriage as well as the
consequences of marriage on post-graduate educational attainment among females in South East
Nigeria.
Methods: The study adopted the mixed-method approach. Data were collected with the help of
structured interview guides from 125 female undergraduates through purposive and snowball
sampling techniques.
Finding: The study found that male preference to marry younger girls predisposes women to early
marriage thereby abandoning further educational pursuits. The study found patriarchal values as
dominant within the area as typified by gender roles which were sharply delineated. Childcare
support was founded to be largely considered feminine. The data further revealed that 89% of the
students associated poverty and lack of awareness as a predisposing factors to early marriage. It
was also found that some of these ladies upon marriage often found themselves in a low human
capital development status.
Recommendations: In recognition of the life-transforming effect of further education on the lives
of females, we recommend that barriers to post-graduate education such as childcare and gender
roles should be addressed through social reorientation. Again, livelihoods and awareness should
be made more accessible through female child postgraduate scholarship by State and non-State
actors.

Abstract
Nigeria is often described as a land flowing with milk and honey in reflection of the rich
endowment of natural and mineral resources embedded in the country. Sadly, few of its people
have benefited from these abundant resources as a large percentage of its population remains poor,
particularly in rural areas. Hence, this present study assessed the awareness and utilization of the
natural and mineral resources in twenty-four selected southwest rural communities. The study
adopts the mixed method to elicit responses from rural and urban respondents in 4 of Nigeria's
southwest states. Findings from the study revealed a high level of awareness of available resources
in rural communities but gross underutilization of the resources. The study concludes that the
available resources in the southwest rural communities if tapped into, could transform the rural
economy and ameliorate the level of underdevelopment in those areas. The study recommends that
the government at all levels needs to recognize the rural areas as the fulcrum of national economic
development and should be given utmost priority regarding infrastructural provisions and adequate
funding.

Abstract
The coronavirus pandemic lockdown has occasioned serious social vices among youths
worldwide. However, there is little attention to its implications on pornographic content viewing
among unmarried youths, especially in Yenagoa City, Bayelsa State. This study, therefore,
examined the effects of covid-19 on pornographic viewing among unmarried youths in Yenagoa,
Bayelsa State. The rational choice theory formed the framework. A descriptive survey design was
employed. A total sample of 340 respondents was drawn using a structured questionnaire. The
quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The respondents’ age was 29.1±10.98.
Pornographic content viewing was high with nude pictures (59.1%) and nude films (62.8%) during
the lockdown. About 51% of the youths indicated that they had sexual intercourse during the
lockdown. More than half (565) had autoerotism behavior as a result of viewing pornographic
pictures. The reasons accounted for this were based on loneliness (15.7%), no knowledge of sex
(21.4%), self-satisfaction (13.9%), no sexual partner (21.9%), complaints from sex partners (10%)
and exploring more sex styles (17.1%). The effects were sexual addiction (24.7%), aggression and
abuse (16.8%), and distorted perception of reality (15.3%) among others. Loneliness and idleness
were associated with pornographic viewing among unmarried youths. Adequate sensitization on
the view of pornographic content should be advocated for the youths by all stakeholders.

Abstract
The study assessed the impact of COVID-19 on education in GSS Dundaye Sokoto State, Nigeria.
In Sokoto State where the study focused, the COVID-19 pandemic reveals the reality of
incapacitation and poor state of the school, while many schools (especially private schools) have
switched to virtual classes to keep their students engaged and abreast, it is not only difficult and
unattainable in Government secondary school Dundaye but also impossible due to the lack of
facilities and poverty-stricken of the study area. The study employed a qualitative and quantitative
research design, 258 respondents (students) were employed for the quantitative data while 12
participants (teachers) were interviewed for the qualitative data. The study found that there was no
positive impact of COVID-19 on education in GSS Dundaye; rather the negative impact was
visibly seen as it reflects in the academic performance of students and drop-out of formal
schooling, and some students even had to abandon schooling for marriage. Some students were
eager to marry due to the fear of being kidnapped. The study recommended that students who got
married but yet to round up-secondary education should be recalled and allowed to finish
schooling, this can be achieved by liaising with the husband and parents especially counselling
them on the importance of education to the girl-child. The study further recommended that female
students should be properly sensitized to the proactive measures government is taking in ensuring
the safety of students in all schools.

ABSTRACT
This study will examine the issues that provide the social impetus for separatist agitations in
Nigeria, using indicators and concepts such as leadership incapacity, state failure, separatist
agitations, and self-determination. Nigeria is currently facing several challenges arising from the
inability of the state to address sensitive national issues like group marginalization, minoritization,
ethnic militancy, etc. One major manifestation of some of these unresolved problems is the
emergence of groups demanding self-determination and political independence as witnessed
among the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the South-East, the Ilana Omo Oodua in the
South-West and several other groups in different parts of the country. Some of these groups believe
that their sociopolitical, economic, and overall developmental interests are not well represented
within the current structure of the Nigerian state, and this has been largely conceptualized as
marginalization and deprivation. Although threats of secession and associated movements as a
response to perceived state failure are not entirely new to Nigerian politics, the dimension they
have assumed today continues to attract local and international concerns. The study will examine
the relationship between state failure and the ongoing agitation for self-determination by IPOB
within the Nigerian state and this will be done through It will rely on secondary sources for data
such as journals, textbooks, and newspaper publications among others. Hence, the thematic
approach shall be used to present and analyze relevant data to demonstrate how state failure
alongside deteriorating material conditions lead to pro-Biafra separatist agitations. This is in
addition to proving that certain actions or inactions of the Nigerian state, have progressively
created the feeling of collective victimization among the Igbos, thereby sustaining the separatist
agitations. More so, the study will highlight the interplay of forces that account for the inability of
the Nigerian government to concretely address the needs of post-civil war Igbos and their overall
implication for separatist agitations in Nigeria.

Abstract
This paper explores an interesting but rarely view metaphorical piece to x-ray the interrogation of
Gender and Value Orientation which, the paper captioned the so-called Weaker Vessel, a
sociological comparative discourse. The figurative repositioning as presented is a distinctive
model. If, properly diagnosed and embraced. It is given to man theologically and has been
scientifically proven study as one of the supreme guides which, has to demonstrate an astute
functionalistic approach to gender course. Compared to man-invented philosophies, yet no avail.
A cursory review of “Ant” with the kind of mechanism of work relationship that exist among its
peers- ‘’Queen, workers, soldiers’’, typifies a model of work relationship that pragmatically ensure
watertight existence guaranteeing Sustainable Development of their lifecycle. The structural
functionalism theory by Talcott Parsons wouldn’t have superseded the “Ants theological model of
life”, considering the time of existence. It empirically sustained the allegorical significance of life
for a man to take a clue. The thrust of the paper will juxtapose the three postulations as claimed;
firstly, “the experiences of oppression and marginalization faced by women in Western societies
is not a universal phenomenon-Oyeronke Oyewunmi”. Contrarily and secondly, “that women’s
oppression and marginalization have been a fundamental feature of African patriarchal societies
since the earliest times-Sylvia Tamale, Bibi Bakare- Yusuf” and thirdly “the subjugation of women
was both engendered and exacerbated by the colonial experience - Ifi Amadiume and Ayesha
Imam”. The study theoretically and analytically critiqued their stand with a view of shifting a
renewal to the clarion call - Social Dynamics, Value Orientation, And Nigeria’s Future: The Need
for Strong Institutions. It is conceived that the study will enhance women and the future of
humanistic studies in Africa and at large, the world, for better development and sustainability.

ABSTRACT
The main focus of this study was to examine the role of religion in feminism and value orientation
in our society. This study was conducted in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State,
Nigeria. This study undertook a cross-sectional survey of 400 respondents randomly selected from
five clusters across the namely Itam, Oku Iboku, Itu Clan, Ayadehe, and Mbiabo communities.
The respondents were all adults selected using a simple random process. They comprised 200
males and 200 females in the age group of 25-65 years. Data were collected with a questionnaire,
personal interview, and focus group discussion. The study was guided by the assumptions of two
theories, namely, conflict theory and class theory. Findings show that women are oppressed by
their male counterparts across all social institutions all the contributions of women in the
development of our society. This study suggests, among others, the implementation of the 35%
affirmative rights for women and the abolition of religious and traditional laws against women.
Advocacy for strong value orientation for women should be encouraged.

Abstract
Theoretical perspectives on value orientation and institutional cultures are ongoing
academic discussion and a very important topic that seeks to provide a deeper
understanding of how values and cultures shape institutions and the individuals
within them. This paper examines the duo themes and aims to provide an academic view of the
concepts and perspectives of value orientation and institutional cultures with a focus
on some selected case scenarios. The work also seeks to understand how these
phenomena unfold and how society can continue to uphold the values that are central
to their institutional cultures. The work in addition explores the relationship between
value orientation and strong institutional cultures, by taking a look at some Nigerian
Multinational Corporations by shedding light on the extent to which cultural factors
impact the company's operations and its ability to navigate the local business
environment. The work is limited to a theoretical analysis of value orientations and institutional
cultures. This means that empirical data are not used to support the arguments made
in this paper. Secondly, the paper focused primarily on Western cum African
perspectives on value orientation and institutional cultures, which may not
necessarily apply to other regions of the world.
Despite these limitations, this analysis provides valuable insights into the theoretical
underpinnings of value orientation and institutional cultures by examining these
concepts through a theoretical lens, it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of
how they are shaped and how they shape the business environment around us.

PERCEPTION OF RURAL PEOPLE ON NEW MONETARY POLICY IN NIGERIA:
LESSONS FROM IKOT NTUEN COMMUNITY AKWA IBOM STATE.
Usoro, Nsidibe

ABSTRACT
The recent Monetary policy of the Federal Government of Nigeria has impacted the social systems
of Nigeria in diverse ways. This work examined how the rural people of the study area perceived
the impact of the recent monetary policy on the people. The study relied on in-depth interviews,
focus group discussions, and key informant investigations. Findings revealed that this policy
impacted, directly and indirectly, the health of the people in the study area. Indirectly, the mistimed
policy deprived Nigerians of the funds for necessities of life, particularly food and good nutrition
which predisposed them to hunger, and starvation that resulted in malnutrition, sickness, and
diseases such as ulcers, Diabetes hypertension, and sudden collapse. While directly preventing
people with disease conditions from accessing medical care with the eventual death of the sick,
debilitated, and aged ones as well as the physical and mental stress upon the citizens. Based upon
these findings, the researcher recommended that monetary policies be introduced gradually into
the system bearing in mind the physical, psychological, and health needs of the people.
Government should also weigh the implications of such policies and make plans to alleviate
pressure on the people and health systems.

Abstract
Background
A very high percentage of women have little healthcare decision-making autonomy in many
cultures and religions. Hausa women are often perceived to have little participation in healthcare
decisions. However, little has been investigated to identify factors hindering decision-making
autonomy by women. The predominant approach to reducing this problem is to focus on women
having control over their maternal healthcare decisions.
Objective: This study specifically, examined the relative influence on health decision-making
autonomy of women, dependent and independent factors, and predictors in Kano.
Methodology
The study used a survey research design conducted between August and December, 2022 One
thousand pregnant women were selected through multiple process sampling techniques. Data
collection were done utilizing a structured and validated questionnaire with a reliability index of
0.85 supported by face-to-face in-depth interview. Data was analyzed in frequencies and
percentages qualitatively. Finally, Stepwise multivariable logistic regression analysis was done
with a P-value <0.05 to identify the association with independent predictors.
Result
The results showed lack of maternal health care services participation is associated with the
independent decision-making power of the respondents, with more in rural residents than urban
respondents. The most important factors hindering decision-making autonomy were the husband’s
and other relatives' interference due to cultural practices and norms, religious misconception, lack
of formal education, level of income, and age at marriage. Stepwise multivariable logistic
regression analysis revealed, women's age, educational status, and income, were identified as
independent predictors of women's healthcare decision-making autonomy. Similarly, it was
determined that 56.4% of urban women as against 64.2% of rural have no autonomy in deciding
about health services participation, while 40.9% of study participants' health care decisions were
made by their husbands. The women's education (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] =1.91 [1.10, 3.32]),
level of income index (AOR =1.66 [1.14, 2.41]), age AOR =7 [3.45, 14.22]), religion (AOR =1.33
[0.96, 1.86] and, cultural practices (AOR =0.76 [0.34, 1.71]), were predicted of decision-making
autonomy.
Conclusion
The preponderance of the evidence, however, suggests that the respondents especially in rural
areas were not free in decision-making for accessing health care urban counterparts. Even though
every woman has the right to participate in her healthcare decision-making, more than half of them
had no role in making healthcare decisions about their health.

CONCEPTUALIZING THE SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF GENDER AND
SEXUALITY AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE
Zaggi, Hilary Yacham (PhD)
Sociology Department, Kaduna State University, Nigeria
Abstract
The paper presents a theoretical review of concepts; it discusses gender and sexuality in line with
the ideas of the social constructionist paradigm. The social constructivist paradigm accounts for
how young people understand and construct their gender and sexual identities through social
interaction. In line with this, the paper also draws upon the ideas of post-structuralist feminist
theories and the New Sociology of Childhood (NSC) to explain the conceptions of gender and
sexuality from the perspective of young people. In this regard, the paper considers young people
as knowledgeable about issues that concern them. Post-structuralist feminist theory understands
gender as a social construct rather than being biologically determined. It is with this understanding
that the paper views gender and sexual identities as being complex and formed through social
processes with young people as active participants in this process as argued by the NSC. The New
Sociology of Childhood sees young people as active agents in society. The understanding of young
people in this manner makes it possible to understand the various roles they play in constructing
their gender and sexual identities through social interactions. The paper, therefore, provides a
discussion of the theoretical perspectives guiding the understanding of the construction of gender
and sexual identities among young people. It also presents a discourse that situates gender and
sexuality research within the African context.

KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDES AND PRACTICE OF HOMOSEXUALITY AMONG
PUBLIC UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN A NORTHERN NIGERIAN METROPOLIS
Godswill James and Salama Ndang Gyere
Department of Sociology, Kaduna State University, Kaduna
Abstract
In northern Nigeria much is not known about the attitudes toward and practice of homosexuality
among university students. Although students hear of the word ‘homosexuality,’ there seems to be
a death of knowledge on what it really connotes and information on the factors that influence the
behaviour is also lacking in this part of the country. Specifically, this study sought to bring to
limelight the knowledge, attitudes and practice of Homosexuality among undergraduate students
in Kaduna State University. A mixed research methods was used to explore the knowledge,
attitudes and practice of homosexuality in Kaduna State University; this consisted of a survey
method adopted to elicit information from 222 respondents selected through the multi-stage
sampling technique and also a focus group discussion to compliment the data via questionnaire.
The results obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistical measures and the focus group
discussions were content-analyzed and interpreted. The study found that there is high level of
knowledge on homosexuality in Kaduna State University, even though most students tend to have
negative perception about homosexuals. Persons who are very religious and spiritual are
significantly intolerant of homosexuality, and attitudes toward homosexuality are a function of
age, education, religiosity, and contact with homosexual persons. The practice of homosexuality
was found to be real but surrounded by stigmatization and discrimination, and gender exclusive
school is one of the major factors that influence it. The study therefore recommends the need for
the Nigerian government to promote civic education on human rights issues in the country most
especially LGBT issues.
Key words: LGBT, knowledge, attitudes and practice of homosexuality, homosexuality in
public universities, students in Northern Nigerian universities
