Abstract

Media literacy education is more than providing tips and tricks to distinguish correct from incorrect information. It also encompasses critical thinking skills about media: reflection about knowledge, truth and information. In this chapter we explore how the method of philosophy with children can help 10- to 12-year-olds to reflect upon media by working with philosophical questions and exercises. This approach was introduced in Belgian primary schools. A description of classroom practices, an analysis of children’s dialogues and excerpts from teacher interviews allow discussing the challenges and opportunities of this approach to strengthen young people’s media literacy skills.

Mediawijsheid is ruimer dan alleen betrouwbare media leren gebruiken. Het omvat ook kritisch leren denken over media, waarheid en betrouwbaarheid. De methode van het filosoferen met kinderen vormt een beloftevolle aanpak om kritisch denken op te wekken. Op basis van deze methode ontwikkelen we de Kritikat-methodiek om het kritisch denken over media en informatie te stimuleren bij leerlingen uit de derde graad van het basisonderwijs. De Kritikat-methodiek bestaat uit denkoefeningen en filosofische verhalen met vragen. De methodiek wordt getry-out in een lerarenopleiding lager onderwijs en 10 Vlaamse en Brusselse basisscholen. In interviews rapporteren betrokken leerkrachten dat de aanpak gebaseerd op filosofische verhalen en denkoefeningen bruikbare handvaten biedt om rond mediawijsheid te werken. Het begeleiden van de filosofische gesprekken ervaren leerkrachten als een uitdaging die voldoende opleiding vereist. Op basis van onze bevindingen formuleren we richtlijnen over hoe in de toekomst om te gaan met mediawijsheid in het basisonderwijs.

The Internet has evolved into a ubiquitous and indispensable digital environment in which people communicate, seek information, and make decisions. Despite offering various benefits, online environments are also replete with smart, highly adaptive choice architectures designed primarily to maximize commercial interests, capture and sustain users’ attention, monetize user data, and predict and influence future behavior. This online landscape holds multiple negative consequences for society, such as a decline in human autonomy, rising incivility in online conversation, the facilitation of political extremism, and the spread of disinformation. Benevolent choice architects working with regulators may curb the worst excesses of manipulative choice architectures, yet the strategic advantages, resources, and data remain with commercial players. One way to address some of this imbalance is with interventions that empower Internet users to gain some control over their digital environments, in part by boosting their information literacy and their cognitive resistance to manipulation. Our goal is to present a conceptual map of interventions that are based on insights from psychological science. We begin by systematically outlining how online and offline environments differ despite being increasingly inextricable. We then identify four major types of challenges that users encounter in online environments: persuasive and manipulative choice architectures, AI-assisted information architectures, false and misleading information, and distracting environments. Next, we turn to how psychological science can inform interventions to counteract these challenges of the digital world. After distinguishing among three types of behavioral and cognitive interventions—nudges, technocognition, and boosts—we focus on boosts, of which we identify two main groups: (a) those aimed at enhancing people’s agency in their digital environments (e.g., self-nudging, deliberate ignorance) and (b) those aimed at boosting competencies of reasoning and resilience to manipulation (e.g., simple decision aids, inoculation). These cognitive tools are designed to foster the civility of online discourse and protect reason and human autonomy against manipulative choice architectures, attention-grabbing techniques, and the spread of false information.

Discussion of the phenomena of post-truth and fake news often implicates the closed epistemic networks of social media. The recent conversation has, however, blurred two distinct social epistemic phenomena. An epistemic bubble is a social epistemic structure in which other relevant voices have been left out, perhaps accidentally. An echo chamber is a social epistemic structure from which other relevant voices have been actively excluded and discredited. Members of epistemic bubbles lack exposure to relevant information and arguments. Members of echo chambers, on the other hand, have been brought to systematically distrust all outside sources. In epistemic bubbles, other voices are not heard; in echo chambers, other voices are actively undermined. It is crucial to keep these phenomena distinct. First, echo chambers can explain the post-truth phenomena in a way that epistemic bubbles cannot. Second, each type of structure requires a distinct intervention. Mere exposure to evidence can shatter an epistemic bubble, but may actually reinforce an echo chamber. Finally, echo chambers are much harder to escape. Once in their grip, an agent may act with epistemic virtue, but social context will pervert those actions. Escape from an echo chamber may require a radical rebooting of one's belief system.

This chapter presents the results of a literature review of empirical research on the effectiveness of Philosophy for Children (P4C). Particularly, it investigates the impact of P4C on cognitive and non-cognitive skills. In this review, only experimental and quasi-experimental studies are considered because they can support causal relationships between the P4C intervention and its results. Also, effect sizes are calculated and presented. Existing high-quality evidence supports the positive impact of the programme on reasoning skills. However, the impact of the programme on other cognitive and non-cognitive skills requires further investigation. Providing robust research evidence could contribute towards the wider acceptance of the programme by teachers and policy makers and lead to the P4C introduction in the school curriculum in a more systematic way. As a result, this chapter evaluates the effectiveness of the programme based on the existing empirical evidence, highlights the literature gaps and recommends areas for further research. También se calculan y presentan los tamaños de efecto. Las pruebas existentes de alta calidad apoyan el impacto positivo del programa en las habilidades de razonamiento. Philosophical dialogue requires an approach to teaching and learning in science that is focused on problem posing and provides space for meaning making, finding new ways of thinking and understanding and for linking science with broader human experiences. This article explores the role that philosophical dialogue can play in science lessons and the contribution it can make to breaking down barriers between disciplines (why to use philosophical dialogue). It then provides some examples of questions to stimulate philosophical dialogue and suggests some moves that teachers can make to facilitate discussion in whole-class situations (how science teachers can use philosophical dialogue). It is argued that facilitated discussion of philosophical questions can help students to build connections between science, philosophy and their own interests and experiences in science, other disciplines, and their lives.

Drawing on fifteen years of experience as a practitioner of doing philosophy in primary (ages 3-11) and secondary (ages 11-18) school classrooms, I will describe and attempt to justify (appealing to ownership and philosophical dialectic) two broad, over-arching principles, presence and absence: the extent to which a facilitator influences (presence) or deliberately refrains from influencing (absence) philosophical enquiry. While it is expected that the facilitator will and should be present in the discussion, this paper pays special attention to the extent to which a facilitator judges that presence appropriate. I revisit the notion of open and closed questions but, instead of considering the structural aspect (Worley 2015b), I address the psychological dimension of open and closed questioning, what I have called ‘Open Question Mindset’ (OQM) and its opposite ‘Closed Question Mindset’ (CQM). I consider two of the main ways in which teachers commonly demonstrate CQM: ‘Guess-what’s-in-my-head’ questioning and ‘Guess-what’s-in-your-head’ questioning/inferring. OQM, together with the notion of ‘intentional sensitivity’—sensitivity to the student’s intentions rather than only to the surface-meaning or logical implications of their utterances—allows me to suggest ways in which one may practically meet the requirements of presence and absence. One particular aspect of facilitation that I consider, and recommend being mindful of, is paraphrasing or interpreting, especially with regard to hidden premises that might be thought implied by things children say. I recommend consciously refraining from interpreting children’s contributions (absence), and instead working hard to elicit or ‘excavate’ children’s intentions and meanings through careful OQM questioning (presence).

Engaging students in information literacy instruction is often a challenge. The authors discuss ways they adapted information literacy instruction at York College of Pennsylvania based on concepts discussed in Eli Pariser’s book, The Filter Bubble. By approaching the students with a course theme that was interesting, timely, and personally relevant, the authors were able to break through student’s own filters to explore higher level information literacy concepts and critical thinking. Students took a personal interest in the topic, which translated into greater student engagement and increased participation. It also fostered deeper reading and reflection about how information is communicated and used by a variety of audiences.

Reform efforts emphasize teaching science to promote contemporary views of the nature of science (NOS) and scientific inquiry. Within the framework of situated cognition, the assertion is that engagement in inquiry activities similar to those of scientists provides a learning context conducive to developing knowledge about the methods and activities through which science progresses, and, in turn, to developing desired views of NOS. The inclusion of a scientific inquiry context to teach about NOS has intuitive appeal. Yet, whether the learners are students, teachers, or scientists, the empirical research does not generally support the claim that engaging in scientific inquiry alone enhances conceptions of NOS. We studied developments in NOS conceptions during a science research internship course for preservice secondary science teachers. In addition to the research component, the course included seminars and journal assignments. Interns' NOS views were assessed in a pre/post format using the Views of Nature of Science questionnaire, [VNOS-C] and interviews. Results indicate most interns showed substantial developments in NOS knowledge. Three factors were identified as important for NOS developments during the internship: (1) reflection, (2) context, and (3) perspective. Reflective journal writing and seminars had the greatest impact on NOS views. The science research component provided a context for reflection. The interns' role perspective appeared to impact their abilities to effectively reflect. Interns who assumed a reflective stance were more successful in deepening their NOS conceptions. Those who maintained a scientist's identity were less successful in advancing their NOS views through reflection. In light of these results, we discuss the significance and challenges to teaching about NOS within inquiry contexts. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sci Ed88:610–645, 2004

This article explores the theoretical underpinnings of critical media literacy and analyzes four different approaches to teaching it. Combining cultural studies with critical pedagogy, we argue that critical media literacy aims to expand the notion of literacy to include different forms of media culture, information and communication technologies and new media, as well as deepen the potential of literacy education to critically analyze relationships between media and audiences, information and power. A multiperspectival approach addressing issues of gender, race, class and power is used to explore the interconnections of media literacy, cultural studies and critical pedagogy. In the interest of a vibrant participatory democracy, educators need to move the discourse beyond the stage of debating whether or not critical media literacy should be taught, and instead focus energy and resources on exploring the best ways for implementing it.

One of the main aims of the Education agenda in the last decade has been to develop critical thinking (C. T.) in children, in order to educate them to be active, involved citizens in democratic society. Different Media Literacy (M.L.) studies explore C.T. towards media texts by cultivating the pupils’ ability to respond critically to both surface and underlying media messages. This paper discusses partial results of a research study designed to examine the support provided by an M.L. program in the development of C.T. of pupils aged 10‐12 years in northern Israel. The resulting data demonstrate that M.L. programmatic intervention and its long‐term cumulative effect were two important factors underlying the significant differences found among the test groups. An interesting variable was also found which explained the superior results of the low achievements pupils (as evaluated by their teachers) compared with the less pronounced gains found among the high achievement pupils. Finally the paper asks theoretical questions about the extent to which a young critical thinker is capable of skeptical reflection towards media texts.

The first edition of Thinking in Education made a case for inserting thinking into all levels of education by infusing critical thinking into existing disciplines. Matthew Lipman, a leading education theorist, provided procedures to enable students at all levels of education to become more thoughtful, more reasonable, and more judicious. In the twelve years since the first edition was published, the author has broadened his approach to teaching thinking. While critical thinking is important and highly valuable, it is not sufficient; students must develop creative and caring thinking as well. This new edition provides methods for integrating emotive experience, mental acts, thinking skills, and informal fallacies into a concerted approach to the improvement of reasoning and judgment. It also shows how the community of inquiry can be utilized for the reduction of violence in the classroom and for the improvement of the education of children at risk.

Media literacy is a topic that has attracted a wide variety of scholars as well as non-scholars. This review begins with an analysis of how media literacy has been defined by the range of contributors to the huge and growing literature on media literacy. The review then lays out the big picture concerning media literacy interventions as well as how media literacy has been regarded within the institution of public education. The review concludes with a series of recommendations about conceptualizations, research, and instruction.

As works of art, picturebooks offer unique opportunities to explore ideas and to create meaning collaboratively. This is a textbook for teachers that demonstrates how philosophical thinking can be used in teaching children. It begins with the assumption that what is taught in schools is not (and should not be) subject matter but rather ways of thinking. The main point is that the classroom should be converted into a community of inquiry, and that one can begin doing that with children. Based on the curriculum that Matt Lipman has developed at the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children, which he heads, this book describes the curriculum and explains its use. The text is self-contained, however. This revision is thorough-going and incorporates new chapters, as well as new material in old chapters. Part One focuses on the need of educational change and the importance of philosophical inquiry in developing new approaches. Part Two discusses curriculum and teaching methodology, including teacher behavior conducive to helping children. Part Three deals with developing logic skills and moral judgment. It concludes with a chapter on the sorts of philosophical themes pertinent to ethical inquiry for children: the right and the fair, perfect and right, free will and determinism, change and growth, truth, caring, standards and rules, thinking and thinking for oneself. Education, in this sense, is not a matter of dispensing information; it is the process of assisting in the growth of the whole individual.

This study tests the hypothesis that a philosophical talent exists in thinking patterns, uttered through oral expressions during philosophical discussions. A systematic study on the philosophical quality of thinking patterns was undertaken among youngsters of 10 - 20 years old. 'Philosophical quality' strongly relates to concepts of 'philosophy', 'philosophising', and 'wisdom'. To describe 'philosophical quality' three main features of philosophy were derived from history and from descriptions by leading current philosophers about the mental activity of philosophising. These include: 1) analysing and reasoning qualities, 2) qualities detecting ambiguities, uncertainty and borderline explorations, and 3) qualities of moving smoothly from theory to practice and vice versa. Empirical studies on wisdom and divergent thinking patterns uncovered similar qualities. Conceptual considerations concerning philosophically qualified thinking patterns were matched with observations of expressions uttered by youngsters while discussing philosophical topics. Their mental explorations of philosophical topics cover a wide spectrum from tentative behaviour, trying to 'capture' the unknown. Conventional judgements through criteria of correctness or maturity do not always meet the quality of these explorations adequately. A different framework is required. Therefore, a conceptual framework consisting of five clearly detectable indicators was developed and a measuring instrument, the tetralogue, as a standardised format for philosophical discussions with four participants to facilitate registration and counting indicators. Tetralogues are ignited by key questions voluntarily selected by participants and chaired by qualified experts. In this research, 70 such tetralogues with 215 youngsters between 11 to 13 and 14 to 16 years old, in two educational levels (relatively high and low) and in two levels of life course (regular and irregular) were recorded, revealing a total of 14,393 oral utterances. The transcribed and formatted utterances were checked on the presence of philosophical indicators. Scores were processed quantitatively. The results of this operation were tested positively on objectivity and reliability. Two numerical indices were constructed: pq and PQ, reflecting philosophical quality of individually and collectively performed thinking patterns in tetralogues. The pq index is based on a balanced ratio of indicator frequencies, while the PQ index was designed to measure the philosophical quality of participants' joint venture exceeding that of individual contributions. Validity of the pq / PQ construct is corroborated by positive correlations between calculated PQ indices and previous estimates of the same tetralogues and between pq indices and characteristics that were expected to relate with concerning participant's personality trait, their educational level and -to a limited extent- intelligence. No significant correlation was found between philosophical quality and age, irregular life course, or philosophical topic (epistemology, metaphysics, anthropology, ethics, and questions of meaning and demarcation). A limited follow-up study shows the influence of school environment and peers on philosophical quality of participants after entering a secondary school of lower educational level. This study has clarified the mental activity of philosophising, confirmed its distinguished domain of cognitive behaviour, and emphasised the difference between philosophically qualified and convergent thinking patterns stressing the independence of the first from traditional measures of cognitive and moral development. The use of the term philosophical talent as an equivalent of philosophical quality is justified by demonstrating that this quality is relatively stabile, age independent, related to openness to experience as a personality trait, determinable at an early age, and potentially exploitable in cooperation with the environment.
