Abstract

The review begins by discussing the fundamental technologies that enable autonomous driving, such as perception systems, decision-making algorithms, and control mechanisms. It explores the advancements in sensor technologies, including LiDAR, radar, and cameras, that allow self-driving cars to perceive their surroundings and make informed decisions in real-time. Furthermore, the article delves into the potential benefits of self-driving cars, including enhanced safety, increased efficiency, and improved accessibility. However, the review also addresses the challenges and limitations that self-driving cars face. I. INTRODUCTION:
Self-driving cars, also known as autonomous vehicles, have emerged as a revolutionary technology with the potential to transform
the transportation landscape. These vehicles, equipped with advanced sensors, artificial intelligence algorithms, and sophisticated
control systems, can navigate and operate on the roads without human intervention. The development and deployment of self-driving
cars hold the promise of improved safety, enhanced mobility, reduced traffic congestion, and increased energy efficiency. This review
article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in self-driving cars, covering various aspects including
perception, planning, control, safety, ethical considerations, and societal impacts. By examining the advancements and challenges in
these areas, this article aims to shed light on the progress made and the key research directions in the field. In recent years, there has
been significant research and development in perception algorithms for self-driving cars. These algorithms enable vehicles to
accurately sense and interpret their surroundings using a combination of sensors such as LiDAR, radar, cameras, and inertial
measurement units. Techniques such as object detection, tracking, and semantic segmentation have been employed to recognize and
understand the environment, including other vehicles, pedestrians, traffic signs, and road infrastructure. The planning and decision-
making components of self-driving cars are crucial for safe and efficient navigation. Various approaches, such as rule-based systems,
probabilistic modelling, machine learning, and optimization techniques, have been explored for route planning, trajectory generation,
and decision-making in complex driving scenarios. These algorithms need to account for factors such as traffic rules, dynamic
obstacles, traffic flow, and environmental conditions to ensure smooth and collision-free driving. Control plays a vital role in
executing the planned maneuvers of self-driving cars. Precise and adaptive control systems are required to handle the dynamics of
the vehicle and ensure accurate tracking of the planned trajectories. Techniques such as model predictive control, adaptive cruise
control, and lane-keeping have been employed to achieve safe and comfortable driving experiences. While self-driving cars hold
immense potential, there are also challenges that need to be addressed. Safety is of paramount importance, and rigorous testing and
validation methodologies are essential to ensure the reliability and robustness of autonomous systems. Ethical considerations , such
as decision-making in critical situations and the interaction between self-driving cars and other road users, also need to be carefully

II. LITERATURE REVIEW

IV. CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, this research review article has highlighted the current state of self-driving cars and the challenges they face, while
also discussing the future directions that researchers and industry professionals are pursuing. The development of autonomous
vehicles holds tremendous potential to transform transportation and improve road safety, efficiency, and accessibility. However,
several key challenges must be addressed to ensure the successful adoption of self-driving cars.

frameworks, and addressing ethical considerations. Collaborative efforts between industry stakeholders, policymakers, and

Boss is an autonomous vehicle that uses on-board sensors (global positioning system, lasers, radars, and cameras) to track other vehicles, detect static obstacles, and localize itself relative to a road model. A three-layer planning system combines mission, behavioral, and motion planning to drive in urban environments. The mission planning layer considers which street to take to achieve a mission goal. The behavioral layer determines when to change lanes and precedence at intersections and performs error recovery maneuvers. The motion planning layer selects actions to avoid obstacles while making progress toward local goals. The system was developed from the ground up to address the requirements of the DARPA Urban Challenge using a spiral system development process with a heavy emphasis on regular, regressive system testing. During the National Qualification Event and the 85-km Urban Challenge Final Event, Boss demonstrated some of its capabilities, qualifying first and winning the challenge.

Today, visual recognition systems are still rarely employed in robotics applications. Perhaps one of the main reasons for this is the lack of demanding benchmarks that mimic such scenarios. In this paper, we take advantage of our autonomous driving platform to develop novel challenging benchmarks for the tasks of stereo, optical flow, visual odometry/SLAM and 3D object detection. Our recording platform is equipped with four high resolution video cameras, a Velodyne laser scanner and a state-of-the-art localization system. Our benchmarks comprise 389 stereo and optical flow image pairs, stereo visual odometry sequences of 39.2 km length, and more than 200k 3D object annotations captured in cluttered scenarios (up to 15 cars and 30 pedestrians are visible per image). Results from state-of-the-art algorithms reveal that methods ranking high on established datasets such as Middlebury perform below average when being moved outside the laboratory to the real world. Our goal is to reduce this bias by providing challenging benchmarks with novel difficulties to the computer vision community. Our benchmarks are available online at: www.cvlibs.net/datasets/kitti.

In our recent work [1], [2], we proposed Point Feature Histograms (PFH) as robust multi-dimensional features which describe the local geometry around a point p for 3D point cloud datasets. In this paper, we modify their mathematical expressions and perform a rigorous analysis on their robustness and complexity for the problem of 3D registration for overlapping point cloud views. More concretely, we present several optimizations that reduce their computation times drastically by either caching previously computed values or by revising their theoretical formulations. The latter results in a new type of local features, called Fast Point Feature Histograms (FPFH), which retain most of the discriminative power of the PFH. Moreover, we propose an algorithm for the online computation of FPFH features for realtime applications. To validate our results we demonstrate their efficiency for 3D registration and propose a new sample consensus based method for bringing two datasets into the convergence basin of a local non-linear optimizer: SAC-IA (SAmple Consensus Initial Alignment).
