As línguas de imigração na construção da paisagem linguística da Colônia Witmarsum (PR): uma ação político-linguística
Abstract
O presente artigo tem o objetivo de apresentar uma análise da paisagem linguística da Colônia Witmarsum (PR), considerada como um espaço de diversidade linguística e cultural, devido ao contato de três línguas: o Plautdietsch (dialeto alemão), o Hochdeutsch (alemão standart ) e o Português. Para permitir alcançar os objetivos propostos por este estudo foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa de campo, interdisciplinar e qualitativa, com um viés quantitativo. O corpus foi coletado por meio de registro fotográfico e as unidades contribuíram para a análise da articulação, visibilidade e vitalidade das línguas na representação dos espaços públicos do local.

This book focuses on linguistic landscapes in present-day urban settings. In a wide-ranging collection of studies of major world cities, the authors investigate both the forces that shape linguistic landscape and the impact of the linguistic landscape on the wider social and cultural reality. Not only does the book offer a wealth of case studies and comparisons to complement existing publications on linguistic landscape, but the editors aim to investigate the nature of a field of study which is characterised by its interest in ‘ordered disorder’. The editors aspire to delve into linguistic landscape beyond its appearance as a jungle of jumbled and irregular items by focusing on the variations in linguistic landscape configurations and recognising that it is but one more field of the shaping of social reality under diverse, uncoordinated and possibly incongruent structuration principles. © 2010 Elana Shohamy, Eliezer Ben-Rafael, Monica Barni and the authors of individual chapters. Este trabalho objetiva demonstrar a paisagem linguística de uma colônia de imigração suábia/alemã do interior do Paraná, a fim de compreender a forma como as línguas presentes no local são disponibilizadas e representadas em espaços públicos da colônia. Além disso, entendendo a paisagem linguística como instrumento de política linguística, discutimos como esse instrumento atua sobre a construção da identidade étnica e linguística do grupo. Trata-se, portanto, de uma pesquisa qualitativa, de cunho etnográfico aos moldes da proposta de Blommaert (2010). O material coletado é analisado a partir da ótica teórico-metodológica proveniente do campo das Paisagens Linguísticas (BLOMMAERT, 2006, 2012, 2013; SHOHAMY, 2012), e de estudos sobre contextos plurilíngues (MAHER, 1996, 2010, 2013; ASSIS-PETERSON, 2008).
Policies concerning language use are increasingly tested in an age of frequent migration and cultural synthesis. With conflicting factors and changing political climates influencing the policy-makers, Elana Shohamy considers the effects that these policies have on the real people involved. Using examples from the US and UK, she shows how language policies are promoted and imposed, overtly and covertly, across different countries and in different contexts. Concluding with arguments for a more democratic and open approach to language policy and planning, the final note is one of optimism, suggesting strategies for resistance to language attrition and ways to protect the linguistic rights of groups and individuals.
Because of the greatimmigration of German speakers to Brazil,the relationship between Brazil andGermany shows peculiar and veryinteresting aspects. From the linguisticpoint of view, the remnants of Germanlinguistic influences still present today inmany communities in south Brazilprovides extremely valuable data. In thispaper we intend to present some aspectsof the hunsrückisch – one of theseimmigration languages – characterizing itas a historical fact, a cultural heritage ofGerman speaking immigrants.
This article offers an overview of the main developments in the field of linguistic landscape studies. A large number of research projects and publications indicate an increasing interest in applied linguistics in the use of written texts in urban spaces, especially in bilingual and multilingual settings. The article looks into some of the pioneer studies that helped open up this line of research and summarizes some of the studies that created the springboard for its rapid expansion in recent years. The focus is on current research (from 2007 onward), including studies that illustrate main theoretical approaches and methodological development as key issues of the expanding field, in particular when applied in settings of societal multilingualism.
Publications on the linguistic landscape cover a wide range of innovative theoretical and empirical studies that deal with issues related to multilingualism, literacy, multimodality, language policy, linguistic diversity, and minority languages, among others. The article shows some examples of the use of the linguistic landscape as a research tool and a data source to address a number of issues in multilingualism. The article also explores some possible future directions. Overall, the various emerging perspectives in linguistic landscape research can deepen our understanding of languages in urban spaces, language users, and societal multilingualism in general.
