Ancient coinage (understood here as pre-AD 6th century Greek, Celtic and Roman issues) constitutes a small percentage of hoards and other assemblages found in Central, Eastern and Northern Europe, dated to the Middle Ages and to the modern period. Ancient coins have also been recorded at other sites in contexts dated to the same time, such as burial or settlement sites. Finds sometimes include pierced coins, which suggests they may have been used as amulets or jewellery. The book contains the texts written by researchers from Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Denmark. The aim of their studies of the archaeological, numismatic and written sources was to examine the use of ancient coins in the territories of present-day Poland, Baltic States, western Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, eastern Germany and Scandinavia in a period spanning from approximately 7th century to the turn of the 18th century.

This article is meant to present and verify historical objects discovered in Kwiatków (Gaj) village by Seweryn Tymieniecki (1847-1916). These relics (related to the Lusatian and Przeworsk cultures) are a good pretext for presenting the lawyer from Kalisz who was also an avid fan of archaeology. On top of a collection of interesting artefacts, Tymieniecki described equally intriguing burial forms. He made a name for himself in literature on the subject owing to his activity in the field followed by numerous publications in which he presented the effects of his surveys in a professional and competent way. It took 130 years before Tymieniecki’s name appeared again in archaeological literature. However, this time it was an entirely different quality of research, with respect to the methodology as well as the results of the work.

The Garbiec Hill in Kaczawskie Foothills, near Myślibórz, Jawor county, was excavated in spring 2001 by the mixt expedition of the Department of Archaeology, University of Wrocław, and Archaeological Museum in Wrocław. On the top of the hill an urn grave has been found, unfortunately illegally explored earlier. The grave from the vicinity of Myślibórz belongs to the group of sites from the Roman Period, probably from the stage B2/C1-C1, with cultural features typical for the area in the upper reaches of the Elbe, that is, in general, for the Marcomannic and Quadic environment. They can be sometimes mixed with features of the Przeworsk culture. A distinct concentration of such sites is located in the vicinity of Jawor. Besides, the discussed site, along with other sites belonging to that concentration, causes a change in perspective on colonization of the Sudetes in the Roman Period.

... Die Goldfibel von Młoteczno (Hammersdorf), Kr. Braniewo in Nordostpolen Magdalena Mączyńska ...

In October 2014 and June 2015, a team of scholars and students from the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw featuring the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology, Polish Academy of Sciences, made an underwater survey in the unnamed lake (formerly Herrn-See) in the village of Lubanowo (formerly Liebenow) in Western Pomerania. During the underwater research, weapons, tools and horse harness parts (including chain reins) were found. They are dated mainly to the Roman Period, but also to the Middle Ages. Some items bear traces of ritual destruction. Parallels may be pointed out with weapons in Przeworsk culture, and to some extent also in Scandinavia. The site should be attributed to sacrificial military deposits. Its extraordinary character lies in the fact that so far it is the only site of its type which is still in its ‘lake stage’, i.e. not a marsh or bog. Most probably it was used by local inhabitants, the people of the Lubusz group. Key words: Herrn-See, Lubanowo village, underwater research, weapon deposit, Roman Period.
