We present the general observation that the Shroud arrived at Lirey by an accidental event. In particular, it is unlikely that the Shroud would have been given to Geoffroy de Charny with the knowledge of the presence of the image on the Shroud, which reveals the preciousness of that relic. This sole observation precludes several hypotheses that have been proposed to explain the transfer of the Shroud from the Middle East to France. We point out that the thesis of the Sainte-Chapelle of Paris is based on such an accidental event. Ironically, several researchers have criticized that thesis assuming the opposite. In other words, the criticism raised by these researchers that a king of France could not have given such a precious relic to Geoffroy de Charny does not apply to that thesis. We present a new hypothesis of such an accidental transfer of the Shroud to Geoffroy de Charny that could have occurred during the festivities of the Order of the Star in January 1352. We summarize the thesis of the Sainte-Chapelle by some of its key points such as the arrival of the Mandylion in Paris and its likely disappearance before 1534 from the Sainte-Chapelle and respond to critics raised against these key points. We also show evidence that the use of an imago clipeata (an image in a rounded shield) partly explains the face-only artistic representations of the Mandylion.
