Abstract

This study aims to investigate the intersection between organizational learning (OL) and knowledge management (KM) in the tourism and hospitality sector by conducting a bibliometric analysis. A total of 628 publications from 293 various sources and 1468 different authors were included in the analysis between 2001 and 2021. Open- source statistical R software was utilized to conduct the bibliometric analysis, specifically, the Bibliometrix R library and the Biblioshiny version. The VOSviewer program was also used to display the keyword co-occurrence network. The findings show that the implication of KM and OL has been widely recognized as critical learning facilitators and as strategic tools for gaining competitive advantage that recognizes opportunities and threats for possible alignment with environmental change. Organizational learning and KM are particularly relevant for sustainable tourism and hospitality solutions, cutting-edge technologies, and organizational service innovations. Four research clusters were identified that provide critical future research paths.

... Knowledge has been widely recognized as a crucial resource for sustainable competitive advantages and innovative ability (Abdollahi et al., 2023;Argote & Ingram, 2000;Valeri & Baggio, 2022;Yiu & Law, 2014). However, knowledge creation is increasingly becoming a cooperative networking process beyond the boundaries of individual firms (Chuang et al., 2016;Loebbecke et al., 2016;Zhao et al., 2023). ...
... The multifaceted nature of knowledge concept has led to diverse perspectives and a lack of consensus in its definition (Abdollahi et al., 2023;Fochler, 2016). Birch and Cumbers (2010) emphasize its evolution into an economic commodity, driving global competitiveness. ...
... Blackler (1995) outlines five forms of organizational knowledge, including its embodiment in staff, embedding in routines, enculturation among staff, and encoding in manuals, guidelines, and procedures. This aligns with the embedded perspective of knowledge adopted by social network researchers, where knowledge is understood and assessed in relation to the social context and social actors producing and receiving the knowledge (Abdollahi et al., 2023;Alavi & Kane, 2008). In the context of the tourism industry, characterized by complex networks, a perspective akin to that of social network researchers is pertinent. ...

Efficient knowledge transfer enhances tourism destination competitiveness. Multiple factors, however, affect knowledge transfer, making it a complex process to quantify. To address this complexity, we developed a quantitative tool by integrating a diffusion model with the major antecedents of knowledge transfer identified in the knowledge management literature. We applied this model in the Western Australian tourism industry and demonstrated its practicality. The proposed model provides a quantitative tool for destination management organizations to monitor, assess and improve the efficiency of knowledge diffusion within their tourism destinations. Such improved knowledge diffusion is critical in strengthening a destination's innovative capabilities and competitiveness. ARTICLE HISTORY

... In addition, seasonality, which has been widely documented in the literature on hotel employment (Abdollahi et al., 2023) like by CBRE (2024) and Les Hoteliers reports (2024), continues to be a determining factor in the variability of skilled staffing needs, especially in tourist destinations with high seasonal demand. This finding is consistent with the work of Pérez Zúñiga et al. (2018) or specialized podcasts like Guillermo y Gloria (2024), who point to the need for flexible and adaptive hiring strategies depending on fluctuations in hotel occupancy. ...

... As evidenced, bibliometric analysis provides an objective view of research productivity and impact, which means how a specific topic is growing and impacting the discourse on a particular topic of study: sustainable tourism (Donthu et al., 2021;Mukherjee et al., 2022). Prior bibliometric studies also followed a similar approach, such as sustainable tourism (Harish & Rao, 2024;Moyle et al., 2020), ecotourism (Rafi et al., 2024), and customer experience/engagement in tourism and hospitality (Rehman et al., 2023), organizational learning and knowledge management in tourism (Abdollahi et al., 2023), and environmental, social, governance literature in tourism (Legendre et al., 2024), medical tourism (Habibi et al., 2022;Karadayi-Usta, 2024), and smart destinations (Soares et al., 2022), among others. ...
... The notion that knowledge is the primary source of competitive advantage has been widely recognized for over three decades (Conner & Prahalad, 1996;Martinkenaite, 2011;Rastegar & Ruhanen, 2021;Rehman et al., 2022). The 'knowledge-based' view of a firm, which combines 'organizational learning' and 'resources-based view' of the firm emphasizes essential role of knowledge-based resources in achieving sustainable competitive advantage (Abdollahi et al., 2023;Banmairuroy et al., 2022;Novotny et al., 2024). This is because the sustainability of competitive advantage depends on "the imitability of the capabilities which underlie the advantage" (Grant, 1996, p. 117), and those knowledge-based resources are often difficult to replicate (Lawson & Potter, 2012). ...

Purpose This article delves into the antecedents of business performance. The main aim of this study is to analyze the effect of knowledge transformation on business performance in firms in the tourism industry and how cognitive and structural social capital heterogeneously moderate this relationship. Design/methodology/approach The empirical study was conducted on a sample of 300 firms from the tourism industry in Arequipa-Perú. The analysis was performed by means of partial least squares structural equation modeling, using the Smart PLS software. Findings Our findings show that knowledge transformation is key factor for increasing business performance. The results also highlight the significance of interorganizational relationships in this effect and the importance of analyzing each dimension of social capital separately. Thus, it is observed that cognitive social capital enhances the relationship between knowledge transformation and business performance, while (Sari and Indriani, 2023) structural social capital hinders it. Practical implications The findings assist practitioners in developing a shared culture, values and goals with their contacts to improve business performance. Furthermore, firms should establish bridging ties with external agents to avoid be stuck in excessively dense networks. Relationships with institutions can act as a bridging agent. Originality/value This paper analyses the unresolved question of how knowledge transformation affects the business performance of companies in the tourism sector as well as how different dimensions of social capital influence in this relationship. Addressing these two critical, but as yet unresolved questions, this study draws on absorptive capacity and social capital theories as an overarching framework to present a conceptual model that integrates both theories in order to analyze the effect of knowledge transformation on business performance in tourism firms and the role of structural and cognitive capital on this relationship.

... The AO as a concept used to explain a phenomenon intimately linked to processes of change (Abdollahi et al., 2023), is immersed in the logic of a context that modifies social, economic and cultural relations, and that is explained as a phenomenon that is determined from a constant dialectic between individual cognition and the social construction of the reality where it is effected (Bratianu, 2023). Fiol and Lyles (1985) identify organizational learning as a process that allows new actions to be taken through the acquisition and development of new knowledge and skills, while Guns & Anundsen, (1996) reformulate that organizational learning, although it is necessary to acquire knowledge, is also needed an application of these, as techniques, values, beliefs, and attitudes that promote mechanisms of adaptation, conservation, growth, among others. ...

Purpose Radical changes in consumer habits induced by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic suggest that the usual demand forecasting techniques based on historical series are questionable. This is particularly true for hospitality demand, which has been dramatically affected by the pandemic. Accordingly, we investigate the suitability of tourists’ activity on Twitter as a predictor of hospitality demand in the Way of Saint James – an important pilgrimage tourism destination. Design/methodology/approach This study compares the predictive performance of the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) time-series model with that of the SARIMA with an exogenous variables (SARIMAX) model to forecast hotel tourism demand. For this, 110,456 tweets posted on Twitter between January 2018 and September 2022 are used as exogenous variables. Findings The results confirm that the predictions of traditional time-series models for tourist demand can be significantly improved by including tourist activity on Twitter. Twitter data could be an effective tool for improving the forecasting accuracy of tourism demand in real-time, which has relevant implications for tourism management. This study also provides a better understanding of tourists’ digital footprints in pilgrimage tourism. Originality/value This study contributes to the scarce literature on the digitalisation of pilgrimage tourism and forecasting hotel demand using a new methodological framework based on Twitter user-generated content. Spatial planning and territorial promotion can benefit largely from the application of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) at different scales. From knowledge acquisition to management and planning, their role in building an image of the territory, and constantly updating it to the benefit of users and planners, is of paramount importance. Institutional channels, together with social networks, are the means by which both a local community and a wider community of users share experiences and perceptions. ICTs are therefore strategic in supporting and promoting a sustainable tourism development of territories. Data and information aggregators as dashboards represent examples of decision support systems where digital data are organized and processed to produce an information output. The present paper is part of a wider research, related to the valorization of a former mining area in the Sulcis-Iglesiente area (Sardinia, Italy), where the extraction activity has left the place to abandonment, and only recently to tourism, stressing the concept of slow tourism. Such new opportunity has been launched with the Santa Barbara Walk (SBW), an ancient mining route currently trying to consolidate as a tourism attraction area. Such a territory is in constant transition with unique characters of anthropic and naturalistic characterization, setting itself as a green infrastructure, capable also of attracting a wide community of regional and extra-regional users. However, its digital network—consisting of intangible infrastructure and flows—is fragmented in terms of policies and contents. Additionally, a state of disorganization in slow tourism promotion activities can be observed. To implement the SBW capabilities, the present paper aims to develop a proposal for the framework of a circular dashboard applied to the SBW. In particular, we implement a set of indicators of performance of the SBW for the organization of information on the walk’s main characters, to facilitate a shared governance and an effective tourism promotion. The SBW is recognized as a network connecting the main points of interest preferred by the slow tourism (This paper is based on the Research project TSULKI—Tourism and Sustainability in the Sulcis (Sardinia-Italy)—and on the agreement protocol between DICAAR Department of Cagliari University and Foundation of the Santa Barbara Walk, signed in December 2018).

This paper investigates how knowledge creation process mediates the relationship between customer orientation and firm performance for small hotels in Malaysia. A survey was conducted to gather data for this study from 308 small hotel owners located in five tourism regions in Malaysia. The results show that i) customer orientation has a direct relationship with firm performance 2) a firm's customer orientation initiatives have an impact on firm's knowledge creation process that are dependent on the dynamic capabilities of their tourism entrepreneurs and 3) customer orientation displayed by small hotels is found to be partially mediated by the knowledge creation process and its impact on firm performance. This paper maintains that small hotels that display customer orientation are mostly dependent on their own resources instituted internally by their owners. However, firm performance improves if the firm dutifully builds its knowledge database from internal and external knowledge sources through socialization, externalization, combination and internalization processes. This study establishes the importance of customer orientation and knowledge creation, especially to those of as resource-based and dynamic capabilities respectively into renewed firm outcomes, to both academics and industry practitioners. This research findings are useful for tourism entrepreneurs, who are seeking to compete and achieve superior firm performance for effective business practices and enhancing return on investment.

The objective of this research is to understand the link and evolution between the concepts of knowledge management, organizational learning and memory. Seeking a better clarification of concepts, discussing them in the theoretical field, understanding their evolution in the last decades. A systematic literature review was developed by synthesizing concepts. From two databases, a total of 2511 scientific articles between 1960 and 2017 were analyzed, divided into two studies. Organizational learning is seen as a dynamic process based on knowledge and is translated through various levels of activity. The ability of an organization to use and leverage the knowledge is heavily dependent on its Human Resources, which are effectively who creates, shares and uses that knowledge. Knowledge management is seen as the management of the processes of creation, storage, access, and dissemination of the intellectual resources of an organization. Organizations must consider your main objective as increasing the capacity of individuals and organizational knowledge enhancers. Managers should pay special attention to the more general knowledge associated with the context of the firm, as it supports the introduction of various types of innovation. Knowledge can be encouraged by a set of collaborative practices of HRM. We can consider organizational learning as a process and organizational memory as the corresponding output. Thus, establishing the relationship that the organizational memory is a consequence of organizational learning.Key concepts that can be used in the new future research are summarized, highlighting its application and diagnosis for organizations, fomenting the strategic decision-making. Tourism is one of the major drivers of socio-economic growth. For tourism organisations to remain competitive, they must be able to adapt to the current dynamic scenario where the sector operates. Organisational learning strategies can provide the sector with the knowledge required to transform tourism research and intellectual property into capabilities for the industry and stimulate tourism models with a minimal effect on the environment. Knowledge management involves managing tacit and explicit information in a way that ensures it is available where and when needed. From a knowledge management perspective, environmental learning refers to the processes of acquiring, distributing and using knowledge of the natural environment, involving the processes of socialisation, externalisation, combination and internalisation of knowledge and its central aim is to improve performance. This paper describes how knowledge management and organisational learning can help to achieve a sustainable tourism sector. Sustainability in this context is understood as efforts to progress simultaneously in environmental, societal and economic development. The paper argues that the principles of sustainable tourism lead to both improved strategies and avenues for future research, provided they are informed and supported by learning and knowledge management; value co-creation; co-operation and trust-building; corporate social responsibility and pro-environmental behaviour. ************************************************************************** Our article, Sustainability knowledge management and organisational learning in tourism: current approaches and areas for future development, published in Journal of Sustainable Tourism, (2023) is now available (50 free online copies): https://lnkd.in/gkZB7xzD

Rural tourism is especially appealing to women entrepreneurs. While managing rural tourism businesses requires complex abilities, rural women in most cases are impoverished and poorly educated and have scarce resources; this limits their opportunities to independently develop comprehensive abilities. Focusing on the case of a 10-year regional program aiming specifically to improve women’s entrepreneurship in China, this study examines the actual behaviors of women entrepreneurs and the outcomes of entrepreneurship improvement due to the developmental agency’s intervention. From the perspective of action learning, this study not only reveals the vital role of intellectual support, which complies with the nature of knowledge in tourism, but also proposes a theoretical framework describing the dynamic collaborative learning process between the development agency’s staff and entrepreneurs responding to the changing market. The collaborative action learning drives women entrepreneurs to overcome barriers in practice, improve entrepreneurship, and achieve independence.

It was supported by a systematic integrative literature review on CKM models and frameworks and their main elements, as well as by semi-structured interviews with tourism specialists in the context of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Findings From the literature it appears that tourist experiences are customer knowledge essential to the improvement and innovation of tourism products and services, and that CKM, still little explored in this scenario, tends to contribute to the management of this crucial knowledge for smart tourism. The analyses and improvements to the structure developed by specialists show its applicability and contributions to the management of STD experiences. Originality/value This paper offers an original contribution to the integration of the theoretical constructs of CKM, tourist experience and STDs by showing how the CKM, from tourism experiences, technologies and social networks, can assist DMOs in the management of experiences and promotion of STDs.

Knowledge is recognised as having more value when it is created and shared amongst stakeholders. Applying knowledge management principles can assist tourism organisations in achieving a competitive advantage. Importantly though, one-way, top-down transfer of knowledge, particularly in developing countries, can result in ignoring valuable local knowledge and compromise sustainable development objectives. Certainly, when considering the context of sustainable tourism, relying solely on more powerful stakeholders’ knowledge inputs to make decisions can result in injustice and undermine sustainability values. Given the importance of justice principles to sustainable tourism, this study applies the concept of organisational justice with a focus on the three dimensions of distributive, procedural and interactional justice to examine local knowledge sharing in tourism development. To address issues of justice and fairness in the context of sustainable tourism development, this study proposes a safe space framework to facilitate knowledge sharing in a local context that is based on recognition of diversity in social patterns and embedding multiple forms and sources of knowledge. This conceptual paper contributes to the framing of justice principles with regards to local knowledge sharing and discusses practical implications for how different claims of justice by local actors can be addressed in sustainable tourism development.

Consumer complaining behavior (CCB) is an important field of research and practice, as it links the streams of service failure and service recovery. Despite extensive work, gaps persist in the understanding of CCB, for its intricate multi-dimensional nature. In this paper, we present a bibliometric analysis of CCB research published since 2000. Specifically, we analyze 729 articles containing 46,134 references, using citation and co-citation analysis. Our study reveals influential works in the CCB domain and identifies their clustering pattern. We supplement the exercise with social network analysis to decipher the centrality features of CCB research. We clarify the scholarly dialogue prevalent in the domain by interpreting the results through the process, valence, and actor perspective. Our review adds to theory by delineating the intellectual structure of CCB research and identifying future research potential. We contribute to practice by suggesting a four-pronged prescriptive approach toward CCB.

Absorptive capacity creates valuable competitive advantages. However, the tourism sector lacks an empirical analysis of how absorptive capacity is generated and how different organisational capabilities impact on its creation. The objective of this study is to identify which are the organisational capacities that generate absorptive capacity in this sector. To do so, we develop an empirical study using the partial least square (PLS) based on 86 Ecuadorian companies, which represents a new and potent tourism destination. Our results reveal that existing knowledge consolidation, the centralisation of decision-making, knowledge formalisation, connectedness, and knowledge-management infrastructures directly and positively influence the absorptive capacity. Direct managerial implications arise, which highlight what mechanisms help create and foster absorptive capacity within companies at the touristic industry.
