Annotated checklist of Cerambycidae (Coleoptera: Chrysomeloidea) from the Brazilian semi-arid region, with new species and new geographic records

Authors:

Abstract

Cerambycidae is one of the largest families of Coleoptera, with approximately 38,000 species described. Knowledge of Cerambycidae fauna in Brazil has increased in the last 50 years, but some regions, such as the Brazilian semi-arid region, remain relatively unexplored. An updated checklist of Cerambycidae from that region, based on previously published works, checklists, and catalogs, and the study of 331 specimens of 72 species, 58 genera, 26 tribes, and three subfamilies deposited in the collection of the Zoology Museum of the Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana is provided. This list has 633 species, 303 genera, 58 tribes, of four subfamilies of Cerambycidae from 75 municipalities in nine states in the Brazilian semi-arid region. A map illustrating the distribution of the Cerambycidae species in the semi-arid region is also provided. Four new species are described: Eburodacrys boteroi sp. nov. and Coccoderus costae sp. nov. (Cerambycinae); and Aerenicopsis joseferreirai sp. nov. and Pseudomecas mourai sp. nov. (Lamiinae). The new species are included in an identification key to the respective genus. Furthermore, Antodice kyra Martins & Galileo, 1998 is new record from the Bahia State; Chevrolatella tripunctata (Chevrolat, 1862) is a new record to Brazilian semi-arid region; Colobothea rubroornata Zajciw, 1962 is a new record from Bahia State and Brazilian semi-arid region, and Odontocera bilobata Zajciw, 1965 is a new record from the Bahia State and Brazilian semi-arid region. It is evident that some regions in the Brazilian semi-arid region are poorly sampled and new inventory studies must be carried out.

... Black dots refer to the current of the species of Piezocera occurrence records Brazil could be attributed to the concentration of Cerambycidae experts in research institutions situated in the southern and southeastern regions of the country. Ferreira et al. (2023) examined Cerambycidae in the Brazilian semi-arid (equivalent to global biomes: Tropical & Subtropical Dry Broadleaf Forests and Tropical & Subtropical Grasslands, Savannas & Shrublands) and revealed that a considerable portion of the area lacks inventory studies. This research highlights the existing knowledge gap concerning the distribution of Piezocera species, emphasizing the necessity for further taxonomic studies to understand its diversity and geographic distribution. ...

In this study, three new species of Piezocera are described and illustrated. New records are provided for two species, and for the first time, we implemented potential distribution modeling of the species in Piezocera. We described Piezocera insulcata sp. n. and Piezocera igii sp. n. from Brazil and Piezocera superficialis sp. n. from Bolivia. South America exhibits the biggest species richness within the genus and the consensus map from the potential distribution modeling for Piezocera shows that almost the entire extent of South America is suitable for the genus, except for the Andes region and most of Argentina.

Based on the examination of Cerambycidae material deposited in the entomological collection of the Biological Museum of Lund University (Sweden), new country records are provided for Pronuba incognita Hovore & Giesbert, 1990 (Colombia), Eriphus bisignatus (Germar, 1824) (Paraguay), Stenolis inclusa (Bates, 1885) (Colombia), Aegomorphus bivittus (White, 1855) (Suriname), Colobothea emarginata (Olivier, 1795) (Paraguay), Colobothea chemsaki Giesbert, 1979 (Colombia), and Colobothea plebeja Aurivillius, 1902 (Brazil). Additionally, a new state record for Colobothea seriatomaculata Zajciw, 1962 (Brasilia, Brazil) is provided.

The Peruvian specimens of the family Cerambycidae Latreille, 1802 (Coleoptera) housed in the Biological Museum at Lund University in Sweden are cataloged and illustrated. Photographs of dorsal habitus, labels, and complete label data of all the specimens are provided. There are 81 specimens belonging to 38 species, 29 genera, three subfamilies, and 19 tribes. Anisopodus ligneus Bates, 1863 is a new country record. The presence of Aegomorphus nigricans (Lameere, 1884) in Peru is confirmed. Additionally, 22 species represent new regional records. Colobothea Lepeletier & Audinet-Serville, 1825 and Taeniotes Audinet-Serville, 1835 are the genera with the greatest number of species, three species each. A note on the variation of elytral pubescence in Anisopodus prolixus (Erichson, 1847) is provided.
