... Resistance may be analysed by labelling or interpreting the resistance, to reduce the chance of the client rejecting it, and to increase the chance of the client confronting their defenses and resistant behaviour. The client can then be persuaded to free associate to the facts and feelings related to the resistance (Corey, 1996;Ivey et al., 1997). ...
... Direct and/or premature analysis of transference may confuse and cause anxiety in the client, so it usually happens in the later or middle stages of therapy. A multiculturallyrelevant and "smoother" way of dealing with transference is by using a family frame of reference as clients frequently feel more at ease when discussing how they experienced life and learned behaviour in their families (Ivey et al., 1997). Feelings of the therapist toward the clientcountertransferenceneed to be identified and worked through as it can be damaging and disrupting in therapy. ...
... These patterns are generally learnt in the client"s family of origin and it is essential that the therapist examines the psychodynamics of the client"s family. The therapist needs to confront possible projection within themselves so as not to negatively affect their clients, as projection can also work from therapist to client (Ivey et al., 1997). ...

Psychodynamics, also known as dynamic psychology, in its broadest sense, is an approach to psychology that emphasises systematic study of the psychological forces that underlie human behaviour, feelings, and emotions and how they might relate to early experience. It is especially interested in the dynamic relations between conscious motivation and unconscious motivation. Psychodynamics is the study of the interrelationship of various parts of the mind, personality, or psyche as they relate to mental, emotional, or motivational forces especially at the unconscious level. In general, psychodynamics studies the transformations and exchanges of "psychic energy" within the personality. A focus in psychodynamics is the connection between the energetics of emotional states in the id, ego, and superego as they relate to early childhood developments and processes. This paper attempts to explain how psychodynamic therapy can be used to explain or interpret behaviour or mental states in terms of innate emotional forces or processes, in relation to the workplace.

Grandpa Amu’s videos have gained sustained attention from many overseas audiences on international social media platforms, becoming a representative case of cross-cultural communication. The article takes the comments on Grandpa Amu’s videos on the YouTube platform as the research object and uses keyword analysis, sentiment analysis, and co-occurrence network analysis to analyze text data from overseas users. The goal is to study the effects of cross-cultural empathic communication. It found that Grandpa Amu, ICH skills, and Chinese traditional culture are the focus. Emotional perception is primarily neutral and positive, involving emotional bonds between people, human wisdom embodied in skills, and the human spirit encapsulated in traditional culture being the main objects of empathy. Based on the communication effect and overseas user feedback of Grandpa Amu’s videos on the YouTube platform, this article provides practical insights for cross-cultural communication from the perspective of empathy.

Dabei werden u. a.

Still sitting and moving forms of breath coordinated behaviour form the essential foundation for both healing and transcendence as exemplified in alpha conditioning, biofeedback, transcendental meditation, !Kung healing dance and Tai chi (Edwards, 2005;Hewitt, 1977;Reid, 1998). Healthy breathing experiences, that have been bodily re-experienced as anchors, provide a phenomenological foundation for various forms of imagery, light, sound, colour, touch and movement used in breathwork, expressive therapy, progressive relaxation, systematic desensitisation, crisis intervention and other forms of caring, healing, counselling, psychotherapy, illness prevention and health promotion in a typically active process (Edwards, 2005;Ivey, D'Andrea, Ivey & Simek-Morgan, 2002). ...

... The difficulty involved in applying counseling theories universally, particularly applying them to diverse client populations other than White, middleclass Western people, has been first recognized by U.S. counselors who had to deliver counseling to a wide range of clients from different cultural backgrounds (Atkinson, Morten, & Sue, 1979;Das, 1995;Ibrahim, 1985;Inouye & Pedersen, 1985;Ivey, 1977;Ottavi, Pope-Davis, & Dings, 1994;Pedersen & Ivey, 1993;Sue et al., 1982). Atkinson et al. (1979) (Ivey,Ivey, & Simek-Morgan, 1980;Katz, 1985).It is particularly relevant for developing countries to borrow models fromthe West as they borrow the industrial products, as is the case for Turkishcounselors who often assume a color-blind approach. The present article discussestheWestern models used in Turkish counseling and therapeutic practices, emphasizing the distinct features of Turkish culture that might limit the application of Western counseling models. ...
... Moreover, there seems to be a great need for assuming a philosophical base that is crossculturally relevant. Using developmental (Ivey, 1988;Ivey et al., 1980) as well as social constructive (Guidano, 1995;Mahoney, 1995a) This chapter seeks to address fundamental issues related to the field of Turkish counseling and counselor preparation. This chapter presents a view of the current status of the counseling in Turkey as a growing and emerging profession and how that profession has been and will continue to be influenced by the higher education systems and counselor education practices in the United States of America and European Union countries. ...
... Ultimately uMoya was associated with coherent spiritual consciousness, a central presence that had unique healing qualities, especially with regard to life and breath. Participants indicated an acute, intuitive awareness that, as a state of consciousness reflecting an ineffable, non-local realm, uMoya was vital for effective healing, psychotherapy and beneficial human relationship processes as documented in standard, evidence based psychotherapy and counselling texts (Corsini & Wedding, 1980;Ivey, D'Andrea, Ivey, & Simek Morgan, 2002;Mpofu, 2011;Wolberg, 1977). ...
... The participants' descriptions also represent Vedic psychology (Alexander, 2005), Integral theory (Aurobindo, 1990(Aurobindo, , 2011Wilber, 2000), Psychosynthesis (Assagioli, 1982(Assagioli, , 2007(Assagioli, , 2012, and holographic theories (Pribram, 1991), all of which imply that general creative evolution and individual human development are macroscopic versions of meditation or contemplation phenomena. Similar to the experiential micro-process that occurs in psychotherapy (Ivey et al., 2002;Rogers, 1980), this typically means movement from external to internal world realms, with continual transcendence and inclusion of lower into higher levels, for example, the self-system from material self to bodily self to mental self to soul self to selfless Self to Spirit as ultimate Source of Self (Wilber, 2000). ...

This study explored subjective and objective perspectives on uMoya, Spirit consciousness and/or spirituality, from a heuristic phenomenological and neurophysiologic perspective. Contemplative reflective data on uMoya and its neurophysiologic correlates were gathered from a culturally diverse group of eight researcher-participants aged 32 to 63 years. The data were analyzed using exploratory, integrative, thematic and small sample statistical approaches. Thematic analysis revealed evidence for uMoya contemplation descriptions encompassing spiritual traditions, human spirituality and ancestral consciousness. The neurophysiologic correlates indicated significant decreases in respiration, delta activity and beta activity as well as associated patterns of a coherent, relaxed and alert state of waking consciousness, suggesting direct experiencing after contemplation. Findings supported an integral contemplative approach to uMoya with the potential for psychotherapeutic applications.

... While the simple pattern of beginning, middle, and end makes good counselling sense, that structure alone is probably too minimal to support all the features of an effective counselling approach. Ivey, Ivey, and Simek-Morgan (1993) cautioned students that a comprehensive approach to therapy means paying attention not just to the application of micro-skills, but also to the other elements influencing their work, such as counsellors' world views, cultural awareness, research findings, ethical practice, and theoretical orientations. This expansion of the ecology of counselling practice demands more complex scaffolding for students than a classical Rogerian approach is able to provide. ...

The purpose of this article is to provide some background, history, and rationale for a process framework that provides robust, effective, and integrated scaffolding in which to situate counselling practice for student counsellors. Reflecting on experience as a counsellor, supervisor, and counsellor educator in two tertiary institutions in Aotearoa New Zealand, and on feedback from student counsellors and supervisees, the author reviews examples of process frameworks for counselling that have their origins in Aotearoa. Two possibilities are identified, and it is suggested that the structure of the hui is mirrored in these two frameworks. One example is highlighted as a way of synthesising the benefits of all three approaches for both counselling practice and counsellor education. ... I (first author), the consultant, just completed a master's degree in sport and performance psychology at the time of intervention. My philosophy aligns with a humanistic-eclectic approach (Ivey et al., 1993;Young, 1992), with a holistic perspective of developing the whole person beyond sport and encouraging each athlete's self-discovery to foster a true sense of self. There is an increasing demand for psychotherapy among ethnic minority populations. Yet, there is not adequate evidence that empirically supported therapies (ESTs) are effective with ethnic minorities. Ethical guidelines suggest that psychotherapies be modified to become culturally appropriate for ethnic minority persons. Conceptual approaches have identified interdependence, spirituality, and discrimination as considerations for culturally sensitive therapy (CST). However, there is no more empirical support for the efficacy of CSTs than there is for the efficacy of ESTs with ethnic minority populations. The chasm between EST and CST research is a function of differences between methods and researchers in these 2 traditions. Specific recommendations for research collaboration between CST and EST researchers are offered.

The antisocial personality has long been dismissed by analysts and psychotherapists as unresponsive to psychotherapy. This paper explores reasons for this, using the idea of Ego and Shadow. Transactional Analysis theory is presented to construct a theoretical foundation from which psychotherapeutic work can usefully proceed. The negative role of therapist empathy, the reasons why successful programs are often run by non-professionals, and indicators for treatment are explored.

In this case study, we report the experiences and reflections of a female trainee sport and exercise psychologist who navigated the dismissal of a management team and COVID-19 in a professional football club. The trainee delivered an educational intervention to a group of 10 players transitioning from a youth academy to the first team at a professional football club. This formed part of a larger organizational intervention to integrate sport psychology into the club. During the delivery, her mode of working changed from face to face to online support (because of the COVID-19 pandemic), and the management team, except the first author, were dismissed from their duties after lockdown. We discuss the challenges of integrating and working within an organization, experiencing the dismissal of the management team, the effect of the practitioner’s gender as a female working in a male-dominated sport, and the unrelenting football culture and how we, as practitioners, may choose to navigate it. We supplement personal reflections and notes from client work with learning logs and supervision as part of coursework components of a doctorate in sport and exercise psychology. This case study contributes to the literature by presenting and reflecting on challenges that novice practitioners might face working within a professional football organization.

Still-sitting and moving forms of breath co-ordinated behaviour form the foundation for all forms of healing and transcendence as exemplified in alpha conditioning, biofeedback, transcendental meditation, !Kung healing dance and Tai chi (Edwards, 2005;Hewitt, 1977;Reid, 1998). Building on positive breathing experiences that have been bodily reexperienced as anchors is the phenomenological base for remedial breathing, progressive relaxation, systematic desensitisation, visualization and imagery used in breathwork, crisis intervention and almost all forms of healing, psychotherapy, illness prevention and health promotion (Edwards, 2005;Ivey, Ivey & Simek-Morgan, 1997). ...

Humanities discourse forms part of several Australian academic enabling programs, either embedded within the broader curriculum, or as part of a standalone unit. Within Edith Cowan University’s UniPrep course, an introductory Humanities unit is offered to students as one of two electives alongside three other core units. The unit introduces students to key concepts within the Humanities, exploring disciplines such as ethics, philosophy, language, history, religion, politics, law, Indigenous studies and fine arts. In addition to offering students an understanding of these disciplines, studying Humanities within the context of an academic enabling program can provide students with several other benefits. Feedback from students enrolled in the UniPrep Humanities unit indicates that students experience an increased level of cultural competency, an evolution of worldview, and an enhanced level of critical thinking upon completion of the unit. Importantly, these areas align with research conducted into broader academic enabling principles. This article will explore these connections to suggest that the inclusion of Humanities within an academic enabling program can enhance students’ preparedness for undergraduate study and life beyond university on several levels.

In the last two decades there has been a lot of theorising about multiculturalism and professional practice. Many practitioners are challenged by cultural diversity daily. Practising from a culturally sensitive ethical perspective in a multicultural society is essential for good practice. Postmodern influences and critical questioning are seen to inform culturally sensitive ethical practice in their encouragement of practitioners’ adoption of multiple belief systems and multiple perspectives and the need to pose questions challenging practice regarding awareness of cultural encapsulation and cultural sensitivity. The development of culturally sensitive ethical practice guidelines within the context of a multicultural society is proposed, firstly, by assessing the cultural sensitivity of the ethics codes and secondly, by balancing culture and ethical codes.

A total of 173 participants (84, 48.6% females and 89, 51.4% males) participated in this study aimed at determining if factor 2, Recognition of Cultural Values Subscale of Cultural Worldview Scale (CW scale) developed by Choi, Papandrea, and Bennett, (2007) would be valid for use among Nigerians or not. Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin Measure of sampling adequacy (KMO) test had good values, likewise Bartlett's test of Sphericity is highly significant and value of communality for each variable (items) hold diagonal value more than 0.5. Based on Rule of thumb for Cronbach's alpha as recommended by Gliem and Gliem (2003), findings of this study revealed that among females (n=84) the subscale showed good internal consistency, α = 0.811, among males (n=89) the subscale showed questionable internal consistency α = 0.660 and among females/males (n=173) the subscale reached acceptable internal consistency α = 0.757. It is therefore, concluded that Recognition of Cultural Values Subscale of CW scale can be used among Nigerians.

The aim of this article is to highlight a conceptual framework of a well-balanced personality in the light of an Islamic point of view. The article begins with an explanation on the nature of human beings as the underlying concept on which the entire assumption of human personality is based. Further discussion will focus on the types of personality ‒ that is, nafs al-ammārah, nafs al-muţmainnah, and nafs al-lawwāmah. In this regard, the spiritual development process is about the continuous effort of the animal soul to subordinate itself to the power of the rational soul.1 Meanwhile, the educational process ‒ in particular, its methods and the curriculum content ‒ is discussed as an element of intervention in developing good personality traits. The exposition of this article’s writing is derived from scholarly and original sources of knowledge ‒ that is, the Holy Qur’ān and the tradition of the Prophet (ṢAAS), as well as the writings of Muslim scholars to verify and elucidate some of the relevant matters.

This paper aims to explore the moral and spiritual dimensions of counseling. Since professional counseling has developed in the West, the cultural identity and individualistic orientation of identity has entered the counseling profession. Recently a surge of interest in spirituality and religion has been noted with several treatments focused on a new approach to counseling. The new approach shows that spirituality in life is central to individuals, families and communities. Therapists examine the relationship between spirituality and general psychological health. Secular and religious professionals recognize the paradigm shift from illness to health and from individualism to collectivism. Counseling that develops from the premise of such a therapist must be free of value. The emergence of an integrated perspective with religious and spirituality counseling views has resulted in a fundamental conflict with the prevailing professional value system. Counselors still want to avoid the role of a moralist. The controversy also relates to the firmness one wants, the therapist attaching moral and spiritual dimensions while advocating certain values. Psychotherapy, as a moralistic company, requires modification in its training program. Therapists need to change their orientation, namely as scientists with deep moral or spiritual commitment. Clients need and demand reorientation like this. This profession has a claim to respond to the needs of its clients and it cannot ignore the impetus that arises in practice.

This study aims to investigate the integration of multikulturalism competence and sosial justice in counseling services. This research belongs to the type of library research, that is, by recording all findings and integrating all findings, both theories or new findings about the integration of the concepts of multikulturalism and sosial justice, analyzing all the findings from various readings and providing critical ideas about the integration of the concepts of multikulturalism and sosial justice in counseling services. The results showed that multikultural counseling is a relationship of counseling on different cultures between counselor and counselee while sosial justice counseling combines cultural responsiveness and understanding the cultural strengths of the client, and focuses on developing strength, empowerment and advocacy. In theoretical and philosophical perspectives that underpin the integration of multikulturalism competencies and sosial justice in counseling services provide a context for developing multikultural competencies and sosial justice counselors. The integration of multikultural concepts and sosial justice recognizes the following as important aspects of counseling practices for counselors and clients, including: (a) understanding the complexity of diversity and multikulturalism in counseling relationships, (b) recognizing the negative effects of sosial oppression on mental health and well-being humans, (c) understand individuals in the context of their sosial environment, and (d) integrate sosial justice assistance into various counseling services (eg, individual, family, sosial, group). So it is necessary to ground the integration of multikultural and sosial justice in counseling services, namely by making academic documents that will apply across populations, services, and client problems.
... Intentionality implies an ability to respond to changing life situations and look forward to long-term goals. Intentional living takes place in a cultural world, and according to Ivey (1997), intentionality and expertise implies the ability to generate thoughts, words, and behaviour to communicate with self and others within a given culture, as well as with diverse individuals and groups. This necessitates a need for both clients and counselors to learn as much as they can about each other's culture as well as other cultures. ...

Racism in South Africa has been a focus of attention for many scholars. However, there is limited discourse on racial micro-aggressions. The purpose of this article is to contribute to the discourse on racism with a focus on the therapeutic relationship. The majority of published work on race, ethnicity and culture has primarily focused on the black person as the recipient of therapy. Drawing from the literature and personal experiences with cross-racial therapy the author presents a discussion of racial micro-aggressions from the black therapist’s perspective. Recommendations to inform clinical practice, research and policy formulation are made.

Numerous researchers investigated the relationship between job satisfaction and work motivation in diversified professions but none investigated bank managers in Pakistan. Therefore, the current study attempts to explore the relationship between work motivation and job satisfaction. Based on the literature review two hypotheses were formulated 1) There will be positive relationship between work motivation and job satisfaction, and 2) There would be a gender difference on the variable of work motivation and job satisfaction. To asses job satisfaction, “Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS; Spector, 1997)”, and for motivation, “Motivation at Work Scale (MAWS, Gagné, M., et.al, 2010)”, were used. The sample of the study consists of 80 middle managers (46 males; 34 females) from different banks of Karachi, Pakistan. A Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was calculated for the correlation between the work motivation and job satisfaction. In order to find out gender differences t test was computed. In conclusion, the findings of the study suggest that there was a positive correlation between work motivation and job satisfaction. Furthermore, there was a significant gender difference on the variable of work motivation and job satisfaction. Keywords: Motivation, job satisfaction, gender difference

The research focuses on investigating the relationship between individuals’ career adaptability, employability attributes and retention factors within the context of talent retention in the 21st century workplace. A quantitative research approach was followed, and a probability sample of (N = 337) of single (42.7%), African (53.4%), female (65.9%), individuals between the ages of 26-40 years (57.4%), who are part time employees (50.7%), mostly at staff level (54.0%) were utilised. Correlational analysis indicated differences between the variables of CAI, EAS and RFMS. Inferential statistics showed a strong relationship between the variables of career adaptability, employability attributes and retention factors. Stepwise hierarchical regression analysis showed that age, gender, race, marital status and job level, their career adaptability and employability attributes significantly and positively predict retention factors. Test for mean differences revealed that males and females differed significantly in terms of their career adaptability, employability attributes and retention factors. Recommendations are suggested for use by human resource professionals in terms of retention practices.

This study investigated the relationship between assertiveness and problem solving skills of 200 9th grade high school students from Đzmir high schools. In addition to descriptive statistics, t-tests, Anovas, and a multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Findings indicated that assertiveness and general problem solving skills did not differ based on gender, school type. Assertiveness differed based on mother's and father's educational level. General problem solving skill differed on mother's educational level while it didn't differ father's educational level. Problem solving sub-dimensions differed significantly on gender, school type, and mother's educational level. Moreover, findings indicated that assertiveness had a significant low relationship with both general problem solving, as well as impulsive and monitoring dimensions. Multiple regression results indicated that impulsive, reflective and monitoring were significantly related to assertiveness level and these three variables together explained 12 % of the variance in assertiveness as the dependent variable.

For the data obtained using the interview technique, which is one of the qualitative research methods. The study included a total of 35 participants, with 25 women and 10 men, who had a minimum of three years of professional experience in private and public schools during the 2021-2022 academic year. Interviews were conducted digitally on the Zoom platform using a semi-structured form developed by the researcher. All interviews were subjected to content analysis. According to the results of the data analysis conducted with the Maxqda 2020 program, the participant's perspective on the concept of cultural sensitivity consists of self-awareness, respect, and acceptance of different cultures. The most important cultural challenges reported by the participants were gender and sex, different value judgments, socioeconomic status, and language. Feelings of inadequacy and desperation were reported as the most intensely felt emotions in the face of these challenges. Participants reported using various methods to overcome cultural challenges, such as consulting colleagues gaining knowledge, and making various suggestions to overcome cultural inadequacies. It is thought that the findings obtained in this study will create an important awareness as it is a first in the literature, and it is hoped that it will contribute to policymakers, counselor educators, counselor candidates, and all counseling professionals in this field.

Success in the continuity of the counseling process is based on the quality of the counselor both personally and also the thorough knowledge and understanding of the counselee. Being sensitive or sensitive for counselors, especially in addressing cultural differences, called culturally sensitive counselors is one of the basic elements for a counselor, especially in carrying out counseling services. By being sensitive or sensitive to religious and cultural differences, the counselor will have deeper knowledge of the counselee and will provide significant benefits or it can be said as an entry point for the continuity of the counseling service process that is more effective and optimal. It is said that counseling services are more effective and optimal because being sensitive or sensitive will easily access the dynamics of religious and cultural expressions.

The practical approach to problem-solving and the opening up of possibilities is responsible for the unbroken popularity of G. Egan’s book “The skilled helper”. He recognised from the outset that there was a tension between behavioural science psychology, on the one hand, and humanistic psychology, on the other. In all editions of his book, Egan tried to combine the two psychological directions, recognising that the behaviourist counselling always needed humanising. It was important for him not only to present a model of helping but also to provide counsellors with a set of techniques and skills to make his approach actually work.
