Trends in Food Packaging

Authors:

Abstract

As the technological development is proceeding consumers' need for quick, ready-to-eat, tasty, mild processed food products with longer shelf life and sustained quality has increased. Food packaging innovations helps meeting this increasing market demands and also reduces negative impacts on environment. The life style has certainly changed, which has resulted in customers having less time to prepare meals which has created a significant challenge for the food packaging industry in terms of developing unique and inventive food packaging solutions. The primary breakthroughs in the field of packaging technology have been revolutionary food packaging techniques such as active packaging, intelligent packaging, and bio active packaging, which entail purposeful contact with the food or its surroundings and influence on consumer health. These revolutionary techniques work by extending the shelf life of food products, improving or preserving their quality, providing indication, and regulating their freshness. The use of carbon dioxide scavengers/emitters, aroma emitters, ethylene scavengers, ripeness indicators, time-temperature sensors, biosensors and sustained release of antioxidants during storage are all examples of advancements in novel food packaging technology. Aside from the basic function of containment, unique food packaging methods expand the margin of food quality and safety. As a result, unique food packaging strategies aid in meeting demand throughout the food supply chain by catering to the individual's lifestyle. This article reviews the fundamentals of food packaging as well as recent advancements in various types of food packaging technologies.
