As it pertains to elder mistreatment specifi cally, RJ is a mechanism for bringing together the elder, abuser(s), caregiver(s), and other family and community members of both victim and perpetrator to look for a positive approach and long-term solution for all involved without involving the courts ( Elliott, 2011 ;Ellis, 2009 ;National Institute of Justice, 2007 ;Umbreit, 1989 ;van Ness, 1990 ). Th ere is usually a written plan that the parties agree to and that outlines what the consequences will be if the plan is not followed. Th is is a preferred approach when the EA or neglect was perpetrated by a family member whom the elder does not want to see prosecuted and sent to jail, hence making him or her reluctant to take action should there be future violations. ...

This book chapter that reviews the history, findings, and cross-cultural challenges of research on elder mistreatment (including physical, psychological, sexual, and financial abuse) within American Indian communities in the US; it reviews what is known about prevalence and consequences of elder abuse in Indian Country and also makes policy and future research recommendations to address and prevent elder abuse.
